A Note From the Harp
What is Your Why?
I just joined the “Y” to help me get some exercise so I can preach the Gos-
pel a little longer on this earth. To live in a place where the YMCA is located
is a real treat. When we were in Selmer, Tennessee, the “Y” was known as
the median where the road would “Y” - and yes, it was the hang out spot for
all the local kids. I do not know “Why.”
The words “what, where, when, and why” all lead to our decisions any given
day. Each seems to be equal in weight. “What” will I eat for lunch to-
day? “Where” will I go to lunch? "When” will the preacher be done so I can
eat?
Why, however, seems to have a greater influence on the rest.
Where will I go to eat for lunch today? Why? Because I am hungry and if I
do not eat, my stomach will tell everyone of my decision. If I ignore my
stomach my body will start retaining water and conserve till it begins us-
ing up stored energy in my body, and I will waste away.
“Why” has more impact because it challenges the decision behind
every “what,” “where,” and “when.” If our “why” is right, then
every “what,” “where,” and “when” will be right. If our “why” is wrong, then
our actions will be just as wrong and even lead to worse consequences
down the road.
Our “why” is our purpose, and the others are our results.
Solomon, the wisest man to live before Christ, explains what our “why” must
be.
“The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his com-
mandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed
into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil” (Ecclesiastes
12:13,14).

Behold Your God – Part 4
For the church to be successful in her God
given work we must keep our eyes on God. We must
see God as He really is. He is the God who has sov-
ereignty over the world. Assyria would threaten
Judah and it looked as if they might conquer them
but God assured His people that “Therefore thus
says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria:
'He shall not come into this city, Nor shoot an
arrow there, Nor come before it with shield, Nor
build a siege mound against it” (2 Kgs. 19:32).
Later Judah would be attacked and conquered
by Babylon because they had begun to look to other
nations for help. They had made alliances with Egypt
instead of trusting in God. Babylon was a great
power but God was still in control and He could have
saved Israel had they been faithful to Him.
Today we hear people expressing fears about
the possibility of another war. There are concerns
about what North Korea might do and how we will
react to whatever they choose to do. We need to un-
derstand that God will allow nations to do what they
will, but He will have the last word. God was the
originator of the nations (Gen. 10, 11), and He is still
in charge and we need to understand that His ulti-
mate will, will be accomplished.
We need to behold our God as the God of holi-
ness. God spoke and said, “To whom then will you
liken Me, Or to whom shall I be equal?" says the
Holy One.” (Isa. 40:25). It would seem that this is
the one attribute that God would have us to remem-
ber Him by. Isaiah called God the “Holy One” some
thirty times.
What does the holiness of God mean? Holi-
ness means “separate; apart from.” When the Bible
speaks of the holiness of God it means that God is
separated from sin. God can have no part with sin. In
Exodus 32 we read of Aaron building the golden calf
for the people of Israel. Later in Exodus 33:5 we
read God’s warning to them, “if I go up into the
midst of thee for a moment, I shall consume
thee.” That is why Moses set up the tent of meeting
outside of the camp, far off from the camp.
Later Moses prayed to God saying, “If now I
have found grace in Your sight, O Lord, let my
Lord, I pray, go among us, even though we are a
stiff-necked people; and pardon our iniquity and
our sin, and take us as Your inheri-
tance” (Exodus. 34:9). Then when the tabernacle
was built God entered in. When Israel turned back to
God they were forgiven and God was then able to
dwell among them. When God’s children live in obe-
dience to His will, God will dwell among us.
