Does God Ever Reject Who He Elects?
It always feels good to be chosen. Whether it’s a job, a party, sports, or anything else
positive, people feel privileged when they are chosen. Likewise, it’s comforting to know that
God has chosen us. We are called the chosen of God (Col. 3:12; Tit. 1:1), a chosen race (1 Pet.
2:9), and God’s elect (Rom. 8:33). God’s Word even says that the names of His people were
written in the book of life before the foundation of the world (Rev. 13:8). All this leads to a very
important question: Does God ever reject who He chooses and elects? Can God even do
anything like that? And if God writes names in the book of life before the foundation of the
world, is it even possible for these chosen to be rejected by God?
The people of Israel serve as a prime example to answer the first two questions. Moses
declared to Israel in Deut. 7:6 that “…the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for His
own possession…” Since Israel was chosen by God, we must ask, was Israel ever rejected by
God? God’s Word flatly says that He rejected the kingdom of Israel when He handed them over
to captivity (2 Kings 17:20). Of the kingdom of Judah, God spoke, “…the Lord has rejected and
forsaken the generation of His wrath” (Jer. 7:29). The New Testament also clearly states that
God has rejected Israel because of their unbelief (Rom. 11:15, 20). God’s choosing and election
of Israel did not make them immune to being rejected by God. Those who were faithful, God did
not reject.
While these things are true of Israel, what about us as Christians? After stating that God
rejected Israel in Rom. 11, Paul turned His attention to those in Christ. He said…
“Quite right, they (Israel) were broken off for their unbelief, but you stand by your faith. Do not
be conceited, but fear; for if God did not spare the natural branches, He will not spare you,
either. Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you,
God’s kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off.” (Rom.
11:20-22)
As Israel could be rejected – and even was sometimes, so God’s Word is clear that
Christians can also be cut off and rejected by God if they do not faithfully continue in God’s
kindness.
In light of all this, how is it possible for God to reject those who He writes in the book
of life before the foundation of the world (Rev. 13:8)? The answer is surprising. God can erase
names from the book of life (Rev. 3:5), and even does blot out the names in His book of those
who sin and do not repent (Ex. 32:33; Ps. 69:28). So with God, being chosen, elected, or written
in the book of life does not mean a person is guaranteed entrance into heaven.
As the chosen and elect, God has expectations of us that we must fulfill. As Paul said…
“For this reason I endure all things for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they
also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus and with it eternal glory. 11 It is a
trustworthy statement: For if we died with Him, we will also live with Him; 12 If we endure,
we will also reign with Him; If we deny Him, He also will deny us…” (2 Tim. 2:10-12)
We who are chosen and elect will receive final salvation if we live faithfully for Christ
and endure to the end. So as God’s elect and chosen, let us continue to choose God as He has
chosen us.
