How Much Shall I Give?
Purpose Sunday, the day when we
will establish the church’s budget for 2020,
will be on the 15th
. Each of us will be given
a purpose card to state what we plan to give each week and
whatever we as a congregation purpose will be the budget.
Each of us must determine, “How much shall I give?”
Giving has been a part of God’s plan for His people
under both the old and the new covenants. Under the old
law God required the giving of one tenth to the Lord. In Le-
viticus 27:30 God instructed Israel, saying, “And all the
tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of
the fruit of the tree, is the LORD'S. It is holy to the
LORD.” When Israel failed to give the tithe to God, He ac-
cused them of robbing Him (Malachi 3:8-10). Clearly, God
was requiring the giving of one tenth to Him.
Today under the New Testament we are required to
give but the amount is not specified. Paul wrote to the
church at Corinth commanding them, “Now concerning
the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to
the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: 2 On the
first day of the week let each one of you lay something
aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no
collections when I come” (1 Cor. 16:1, 2). We are to give
as we have prospered. The Jews were obligated to the na-
tion of Israel. The church is obligated to teaching the entire
world. The Jews were under the Law, but we are under
grace. To set a specific amount would keep man from
expressing his liberality. If God had commanded us to give
10 % of our income, I’m afraid that would result in some
people limiting their liberality to 10% and nothing more. I say
that because sometimes I hear people ask questions such
as “Do I have to attend services Sunday night or Wednes-
day night?” What they basically mean is, “If God doesn’t
require me to be present on those occasions I will not be
there. They want to get by on the minimum. And
it is the same way with their giving. If God says 10% then I
won’t give one bit more than that!
Many times we are not satisfied with the minimum
when it comes to our needs. Generally speaking we want
the best clothing that we can afford when in reality any gar-
ment made from an old feed sack would be sufficient for a
covering. When we purchase a car we want one with all the
“bells and whistles.” But again a basic model of any used
car would be just as effective in getting us from one place to
another. When we think of buying a house we want some-
thing with the newest design with all the modern conven-
iences but a house made of rough hewed logs, a wood
burning stove, and a water pump in the kitchen would meet
our needs. There is nothing wrong in having that new car or
house with all the finest qualities. I’m just using this as an
illustration that we don’t want the minimum for meeting our
needs. Then why do we think that God will be happy with
our giving our minimum to Him? In Malachi 1:8 we are told,
“And when you offer the blind as a sacrifice, Is it not
evil? And when you offer the lame and sick, Is it not
evil? Offer it then to your governor! Would he be
pleased with you? Would he accept you favorably?"
Says the LORD of hosts.”
