Notes
Born to Die
During this time of year, the world takes a brief moment to remember the birth of
Jesus that took place two thousand years ago. For us and many, it is a time to celebrate and
rejoice that Jesus was born to save the world from condemnation (John 3:17). And while
Jesus did come to earth to accomplish and fulfill many things, the main purpose for which
Jesus came to earth was to die. Everything else that Jesus did would have been pointless
had he not died. Only through His death was salvation and forgiveness of sins for the
world possible.
For many of us, we hope and pray that our lives on this earth will be long and full
in every way. We hope to be blessed with family, to see future generations rise, to see
what our work accomplishes, and to experience the joy of a fulfilling life. While for us
there certainly nothing wrong with desiring these things, for Jesus, He was never destined
for such a life on earth. He was born to die (Acts 2:23), and to experience the most
unpleasant life on earth that one could experience.
While we do not know at what point in Jesus’ life that He understood that His
mission was to die on the cross, we do know that it appears He understood this early on in
His ministry (John 2:19-22), if not earlier. It may be easy to think that the divine Son of
God wouldn’t have as much difficulty dealing with such a monumental and excruciating
mission, but this is not what Scripture reveals. Throughout Jesus’ ministry, He was
distressed (Lk. 12:50), troubled (John 12:27), grieved (Mat. 26:38) and agonized (Lk.
12:44) at the very thought of fulfilling His purpose to die. Rightly did Isaiah prophecy of
Him that He was a man of sorrows (Is. 53:3). Jesus truly had the weight of the world on
His shoulders, and His task was overwhelming.
What would have it been like to walk a day in His shoes, knowing that every
pleasure and joy of this world was not for you, knowing that your life was purposed for
suffering and death? Such an existence would be an unimaginable nightmare to any one of
us. And yet this was the life of Jesus on earth. So why was Jesus willing to live a life
doomed to death and suffering?
Because Jesus had great joy at the thought of you and I obtaining eternal life
through His death (Heb. 12:2). This joy and His determination outweighed the immense
sorrow and suffering that He experienced on earth. He lived a life of misery, purposed for
death so that you and I would never have to (Heb. 2:9). He died because He desired to
bring us back to God (1 Pet. 3:18). He lived a short and sorrowful life so that we could
have eternal life and joy forever (John 10:10b; Jude 24). And yet, He also died so that we
can die too. Not a sacrificial physical death like His, but rather, a spiritual death to living
for ourselves in this world (2 Cor. 5:15). And unless we have first died to ourselves
through faith in Him in waters of baptism, His birth and death have accomplished nothing
for us (Rom. 6:3-4). Only through this entrance into Christ does His life of suffering save
us and bring us to God. He was born to die so that all could live. So, as we remember His
birth, life, and death, let us express our love and gratitude for the life He suffered through
on our behalf by dying to ourselves and living for Him.
