Listen!
“Raise your voice!” “Be heard!” “Express yourself!” The voice of our
generation. Everyone wants to share, but who wants to listen? The irony is that a
generation of all sharers and talkers leaves no one left to listen. Even more ironic is
that this is what everyone wants! Someone who will listen! But if all our generation
knows how to do is share and talk, then where will all the listeners come from?
As a personal virtue, listening is clearly undervalued in today’s world. Yet, a
listening ear is precisely what individuals want from others. It should be obvious to the
world that if you want to be heard, then you got to be willing to listen. But “Be a good
listener!” still hasn’t caught on as a generational catch phrase. This ironic imbalance
between talkers and listeners is nothing new to humanity. People have always placed
greater value on talking than listening. And so, listening is needed now more than ever.
This is precisely what Jesus taught the world and continues to teach us today.
As Jesus began the Parable of the Sower, he started by simply saying, “Listen!” (Mk.
4:3). Similarly, Jesus said elsewhere in Mark “Listen to Me, all of you, and under-
stand…” (Mk. 7:14c). Jesus called the world to stop talking for one second, so it could
listen to Him. And if you just read those Words of Jesus on this page, you did just as
He commanded: You listened! But Jesus does not define listening alone as a virtue.
After the Parable of the Sower in Mark, Jesus said, “Take care what you listen
to” (Mk. 4:24b). When we casually listen to whatever, it can be easy to not regulate
what we listen to. But the content of what we listen to does matter. Jesus taught in the
Parable of the Sower that those who listen to the Word of God are fruitful and grow.
Only the hearing of God’s Word can provide the spiritual growth that humanity needs.
No other voice or source that we listen to can provide this. And while listening to
God’s Word is precisely what the world needs and what we need today, Jesus never
taught that listening alone is enough. “Everyone who hears these words of Mine and
does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the
sand” (Matthew 7:26).
According to Jesus, listening to His Words, even agreeing with them, without
acting upon them is pointless. It accomplishes nothing. This goes for the people of the
world, and for us. The people of the world will not receive an enduring and eternal
foundation without listening to and obeying the Words of Jesus. And we will only be
blessed by God if we are effective listeners and doers of Jesus’ Words (James 1:25).
Before the doing comes the listening. Before we can listen, we need to stop
talking. So let us lead the world by example. Let us be the ones who are good listeners!
Let us make our voices heard by listening to and following Jesus!
