Genuine promises and guarantees are hard to come by in this world. As the old saying goes, “There are only two things that are certain: Death and Taxes.” We know however that there are far more promises and guarantees for God’s children according to His Word (1 Pet. 1:4). While these are clearly stated and have proven to be true over time, there is still a danger of us mistaking Biblical principles for Biblical guarantees. The book of Proverbs, for example, contains both principles and promises. Discerning when a proverb is a principle or a guaranteed promise is key to understanding the Proverbs accurately as well as understanding the promises of God accurately. Let us consider an important example… Prov. 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.” The way this proverb is stated certainly sounds like a guarantee. Our experience alone indicates to us that this proverb is not always true. We have all seen excellent Christian parents who have raised children to the best of their ability, only to find that some still stray away from the path of life that they were raised to follow. Are such cases examples of a failed promise of God, or is this proverb simply a principle that is sometimes misunderstood to be a guaranteed promise? If one takes a holistic look at the book of Proverbs, it becomes immediately evident that the outcome of how a child turns out is not entirely dependent on the parents, but instead is also dependent on the child. As Prov. 19:27 says, “Cease listening, my son, to discipline, and you will stray from the words of knowledge.” The child’s own receptivity and willingness to receive and learn godly discipline is also vital for the child to grow up in the way his parents raised him. Prov. 6:20 says, “My son, observe the commandment of your father and do not forsake the teaching of your mother…” Again, Proverbs teaches us that parents can raise their children right, yet it is possible for their children to forsake the path and the way they were taught. This critical context from the book of Proverbs helps us understand that some teachings are actually principles, not 100% guarantees. We also know however that children who are raised to be godly by godly parents often do live life according to the way they should go, as their parents instructed them. This proverb is consistently shown to be true even though it is not to be understood as an 100% guarantee, as the context of the book of Proverbs itself explains to us. But let us not forget that the Proverbs also contain unequivocal promises that are to be understood as 100% guarantees. For example, Prov. 12:28 says, “In the way of righteousness is life, and in its pathway there is no death.” Also, in Prov. 14:32, “…the righteous has a refuge when he dies.” These references to eternal life are rightly understood to be guarantees for the righteous of God – both in the context of Proverbs and of the whole Bible. You can see no doubt how critical it is to understand the difference between a principle and a guarantee in God’s Word. One’s faith can be shaken to the core if they take a principle as a guaranteed promise. But when we understand the distinction between principle and promise in God’s Word, we can properly use the wisdom God has given us and rest confidently in the promises that are guaranteed. ~Jeffrey Howell
