What’s Your Interpretation?
How often have you heard people ask others during a Bible discussion, “What does
this Scripture mean to you”? I’m sure you noticed that this question often results in a
variety of answers, sometimes answers that even contradict each other! Now there is
certainly nothing wrong with verses in the Bible having personal significance – i.e.,
favorite Bible verses, verses that helped you through a tough time, etc. But is there
something wrong with Bible verses having a personal meaning or interpretation? And most
importantly, do the Scriptures in God’s Word have precise and objective meaning that do
not depend on individual interpretation? Let us begin by examining the Words of Jesus as
we contemplate these important questions:
“And a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, ‘Teacher, what shall I do to
inherit eternal life?’ 26 And He said to him, ‘What is written in the Law? How does it read
to you?’ 27 And he answered, ‘You shall love the lord your God with all your heart, and
with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as
yourself.’ 28 And He said to him, ‘You have answered correctly; do this and you will
live.’” – Luke 10:25-28 (emphasis added)
In v.26, notice Jesus’ question: “How does it (the Law of Moses) read to you?”
Doesn’t this question sound like “What does this Scripture mean to you?”, or “What’s
your interpretation?” And yet, Jesus was not asking for a personal meaning or
interpretation as we see in v.28. Jesus’ response makes this clear when He said, “You have
answered correctly.” In other words, “you gave the correct answer to the question.” “You
understand the correct interpretation of this Scripture.” Jesus didn’t say, “I like your
perspective on this Scripture,” or “That’s an interesting way of looking at it.” Jesus’ focus
was on understanding Scripture correctly, not on a personal meaning or interpretation of
Scripture. And so, Jesus demonstrates that Scripture does have a correct and objective
understanding that can be grasped.
Elsewhere, Jesus taught that Scripture cannot contradict itself (John 10:35), which
also reveals that Scripture is harmonious and precise in meaning. The Bible itself affirms
that Scripture must be understood and explained accurately (Acts 18:25-26; 2 Tim. 2:15).
In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon expresses the nature of the Bible’s objective meaning
because he was careful “to write words of truth correctly” in the Bible (Ecc. 12:10).
Likewise, since the Bible’s meaning can be “distorted” (2 Pet. 3:16) and “adulterated” (2
Cor. 4:2) by men, then the Bible must have a clear and pure meaning to begin with.
Accordingly, God’s Word declares that we thankfully can read and understand the true
meaning of Scripture as God intends it (2 Cor. 1:13; Eph. 3:3-4). But how can we do this?
The Bible itself teaches us that we can carefully examine Scripture daily to
understand its true meaning and intent (Acts 17:11). While it can take time to uncover the
true meaning behind a Bible verse or passage, the more we examine Scripture the more we
learn of Scripture’s true meaning. So instead of asking others “What’s your
interpretation?”, let us ask God to do as David asked: “Give me understand according to
Your Word” (Ps. 119:169b).

Thank you
Deerfoot Church of Christ,
I want to thank all of those at Deerfoot for
sending the cards, phone calls and
especially those who work hard in making
the meals that Sherryl and I receive every
Thursday. It makes me feel good to know
that you all have not forgotten me and
Helen who has passed away. We love all of
you and we were proud and glad to be able
to work with you in God’s Kingdom. Hope
to see some of you soon. God bless you all.
Keep up the good work!
In Christian Love,
Norman and Sherryl
I want to thank my brothers and sisters in
Christ here at Deerfoot for all of your
thoughts and prayers at the loss of my
Uncle Paul Carr. You also sent sympathy
cards and covered me with love. I love you
all with the love of the Lord.
Debra Dominic and family
Thank you so much to the elders, JJ and
everyone else who put together the
graduation reception and service on April
24th. We were overwhelmed by your
generosity and so thankful for everyone
who came by. The service was fantastic and
so appropriate for graduating teens. We are
so fortunate to have such a great church
family. Thank you also for the Bible. The
notes from the elders inscribed inside will
be so useful in the next chapter of Henry’s
life.
In Christian love,
Robert, Carrie and Henry Mann
