That’s What You Get!
“He had it coming!” “She sure got her comeuppance!”
Not only do we hear such sentiments often, but it’s
likely we have said such things ourselves. There is
certainly nothing wrong with recognizing that “…
whatever a man sows, this he will also reap” (Gal. 6:7).
But do such words express joy at the demise of people,
or a love for justice? Is there a distinction between those
two things? Is it wrong to take pleasure in the calamity
of others even if it is deserved?
Scripture plainly says that God loves justice (Ps.
33:5). After all, He certainly wouldn’t be very loving
if He didn’t. So as Christians are to be like God their
Father, so Christians too are to love justice. But God
also declares that one’s love for justice must not turn
into feeling joy at the demise of others. As Prov. 24:17-
18 says…“Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and
do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles; Or the
LORD will see it and be displeased, and turn His anger
away from him.
”Even more explicitly, Prov. 17:5b says, “He who
rejoices at calamity will not go unpunished.”
When someone really deserves justice, it is sadly
natural for humanity to enjoy watching the resulting
punishment a guilty person has brought on himself. But
God has made clear that we must love justice, but not
enjoy the just punishment of others. Although necessary,
it is truly sad when anyone is punished. God proclaims
to humanity in Ezek. 18:23, “‘Do I have any pleasure in
the death of the wicked,’ declares the Lord GOD, ‘rather
than that he should turn from his ways and live?’” The
demise of the guilty gives God no pleasure. Nor should
it give us any pleasure – no matter how much it is
deserved.
It’s all too easy to passively view people around
us and point out their sinful decisions that produce
unnecessary pain for them. “He sure shot himself in the
foot on that one!” But ironically, if people were to
examine our own lives carefully, they would certainly
find examples of our own wrong choices producing
unnecessary suffering for ourselves. How many times
could it have been said to us “That’s what you get!”?
More than we have received, I’m sure! But everyone
alive has sinned and has made stupid decisions that
resulted directly in their own demise. This is not to
excuse our own wrong or the wrong of others. Rather,
the point is that Christians should be the first to
sympathize with people who receive the punishment
they deserve, because we have been spared from the
ultimate punishment we deserve. Through Jesus, justice
is fulfilled, punishment at judgment is taken away, and
mercy is given to anyone who obediently receives it. So,
when we see people receiving the pain of punishment,
instead of rejoicing, let us have compassion, and
lovingly pray that they too someday will not get what
they deserve.
