AI for Work: The Vigorous Exuberance of ChatGPT
• Conversational AI and chatbots have been
around a long time. But has never really hit it
big or gone mainstream.
• Until ChatGPT arrived.
• A viral phenomenon that launched on
November 30th, 2022.
• Gained a million users in just the first five
days, one of the fastest adopted digital
products in the world.
• It appears to be an incredibly versatile
services that uses the collective open
knowledge of the world to answer
questions.

ChatGPT Didn’t Magically Appear. It’s Built on a Lot of Work.
• ChatGPT started with the creatinon of OpenAI in 2015.
• Founded by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, Reid
Hoffman, Jessica Livingston with $1 billion in funding.
• Timeline:
• April 2016, OpenAI releases OpenAI Gym, a platform for
reinforcement learning research.
• December 2016, OpenAI releases Universe, a platform for
measuring and training an AI's general intelligence.
• 2018, Musk resigns, citing conflict of interest.
• In 2020, OpenAI announces the seminal GPT-3, a uniquely
effective large language model (LLM) trained on trillions of words
from the Internet. It also has an API.
• In 2021, OpenAI introduced DALL-E, a popular deep learning
model that can generate digital images from natural language
descriptions.
• November, 2022: ChatGPT is launched, based on GPT-3.
• January 23, 2023, Microsoft announced $10-$20 billion
investment in OpenAI.

Great, But What Can ChatGPT Actually Do?
ChatGPT can:
• Answer most questions about general human knowledge
• Author stories and letters
• Write and debug computer programs
• Compose music, teleplays, fairy tales, and essays
• Answer test questions
• Write poetry and song lyrics
• Emulate a Linux system
• Simulate scenarios with multiple people
• Play games like tic-tac-toe or chess
• Write in the style or tone of any known or fictional person
Notably, it remembers what you ask and saves the context,
allowing you to ask follow up questions.

But ChatGPT Really Shines at Work Tasks
Useful tasks that ChatGPT can do for workers
• Write job postings complete with detailed qualifications
• Automated simple tasks and workflows
• Create seed ideas for creative tasks
• Write a customized resume and cover letter
• Explain complex new topics in a special way
• Solve difficult math and business problems step-by-step
• Get advice in difficult work situations
• Get expert assistance in writing, testing, and debugging code
• Create content in multiple languages
• Prepare for meetings, presentations, and interviews
• Get tailored technical support on almost any topic

What ChatGPT Cannot Do
ChatGPT’s predecessor InstructGPT could produce harmful
and deceitful responses. ChatGPT thus has many
safeguards built into it so that it’s pretty good at avoiding:
• Enabling criminal activity
• Creating hate speech
• Writing phishing emails and malware
ChatGPT is also not good at:
• Providing trustworthy knowledge. It must always be
checked.
• Providing knowledge in some rarified fields
• Creating good music (or even good writing in some cases)

Criticisms and Possibilities of ChatGPT
Worries about ChatGPT include:
• Weaking the value of knowledge worker
• Using it to evade or plagiarize in schoolwork
• Using it create divisive or polarizing speech at scale
• Effects on democracy, such as writing automated
comments to affect the decision process of new laws
• Impact on unemployment
Possibilities of ChatGPT include:
• Inexpensive on-demand knowledge bots
• A great increase in the quality/depth of work
• Significant productivity gains
• A profound trigger to human creativity
