4. Small Engine:
Cylinder and Frame is made
up of one piece casting
Large Engines:
• Separate Cylinder liner is used
• Cylinder liner, Water Jacket
and frame are manufactured separately

5. CYLINDER LINER
• Cylindrical part fitted into an Engine Block to form a
Cylinder.
• Serves as the inner wall of a cylinder, forms a sliding
surface for the piston rings while retaining the lubricant
within.
• Allows longitudinal expansions

20. PISTON
• Reciprocating part of I.C. engine.
• Transmit gas pressure-force to CS through CR
• Compresses the gas in compression stroke.
• Seals inside portion of cylinder from crankcase: Piston rings
• Takes side thrust resulting from obliquity of connecting rod.
• Dissipates heat from combustion chamber to cylinder wall

21. Design requirements of Piston
• Should have sufficient strength
• Should have sufficient rigidity
• Adequate capacity to dissipate heat
• Should have minimum weight
• Form an efficient seal to prevent leakage
• Noiseless operation

22. Piston head:
Depend upon required volume for CC and arrangement of valves.
April 2, 2018 D.P.Bhaskar 22
23. Heat dissipation
Piston head absorbs heat during combustion and transmits to cylinder wall

30. Piston pin (Gudgeon pin)
April 2, 2018 D.P.Bhaskar 30
•Connects Piston & CR
•End movement is restricted by circles'.
Two criteria's
•Bearing
•Bending
40. Loads on CR
April 2, 2018 D.P.Bhaskar 40
CR is four times stronger for buckling about YY
axis as compared to bucking about XX axis.
Rankine critical load required to buckle the CR: Pcr
•Pc=Pcr/FoS
•Pcr=Pc * FoS
