Who hear has used BuddyPress? Now before we get into depth we will do a quick tour of BuddyPress for those of you might not be familiar with it.
BuddyPress is a WordPress plugin. You can find it in the WordPress repo or go to buddypress.org and go from there.
BuddyPress is not just a plugin, but a plugin of a variety of different components. Some of these are listed here and we’ll go through the major ones now.
BuddyPress automatically creates a registration page and allows you to add some profile fields to it - so a new user can register, add their username/password, and also fill out a few fields like their city or first/last name.
Most community sites allow their members to store information about themselves. BuddyPress allows the site admin to create these fields - like a drop down for which city they live in - and allow you to group these fields. So you could have a “social” group of profile fields for example.

So you could have a “social” group of profile fields for example. And users can update these fields in their profiles on the frontend.
You can allow users to choose if they want this profile information public or private. Public information is shown on the user’s public profile page.
BuddyPress 2.2 introduced a Member Type API, which allows developers to register their own unique member types, i.e. teacher, student, coach, etc. You can assign profile fields to that particular user.
BP Member Type Generator makes it easy for site administrators to create and manage member types in the admin – without having to write any code.
Activity streams are the cousins to Facebook walls or Twitter streams. Users can view and send updates on activity streams that monitor activity from a user’s friends, a group, or site-wide activity.
BuddyPress out of the box allows two-way friendship relationships. You stumble upon another user in the system, you send a “friendship request”, and the other user confirms or denies that request.
Here you can see the “add friend” button which appears to logged in users.
If you’ve ever used DM on Twitter or Facebook, this is a similar concept. Private communication. In BuddyPress it takes this a step further with an inbox and the ability to see the thread history of the message between you and the other person.

One of the new BuddyPress components, notifications are exactly what they sound like. They can alert you to things happening involving you on the site like getting a new message or getting a friend request. It’s API can be expanded to alert you when someone posts a comment or sends you a document.
We could give an entire talk on groups, but simply put it allows you to create mini-social networks on your site centered on whatever you want. People can find a group, join it, and interact with a number of users that have also joined that same group. Groups can be public or private and are one of the most flexible components in BuddyPress.
If you talk about higher education and BuddyPress one of the biggest and oldest sites is an academic social network for the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Their developers have given back to BuddyPress and site supports a large network of members. Their highlight is their use of a plugin called Commons in a Box.
ParentNet is a network of hundreds of parents of Michigan Tech students all gathered together to swap information, discuss concerns, and get some questions answered about Michigan Tech.
Some of you might recognize Temple University since it’s based here in Philly. It’s a multisite network that allows 1000 members teach/take courses (as blogs) and learn about and engage with each other (through BuddyPress), and aggregate their knowledge (through aggregated RSS feeds, e.g, of faculty research).
Dawson College has a Faculty Writing Fellows community. A group of teachers working together on innovative approaches to writing instruction, critical thinking and active learning.. What’s cool is that they use a plugin called BP Groups Documents so people can upload and share documents within these groups for the others. So it’s only available within these groups and doesn’t clutter up the site outside of the group.
Mike Richwalsky: “The Mentoring Project at John Carroll University uses WordPress and BuddyPress to connect JCU students with alumni willing to share their expertise, experience, and ideas. Alumni enter their information using a Gravity Form that populates a "mentor" custom post type, including a few taxonomies of interest, industry, and experience. We use BuddyPress to allow students to log in, browse mentors and categories as well as share with each other.”
Foundation of Excellence is a fairly new non-profit that works with academically talented students from low/mod. income families. It does STEAM summer camps in South Florida and last summer it did one for girls 8-12. They worked on everything from Minecraft to robots to building their own WordPress blogs. Because any information about child should be secure, they created a private network to allow their parents to see what they did on that day and what courses they completed. Other educational and non-profits use BuddyPress in a similar way.

All the examples I showed you today - like most good sites that are built with WordPress or not - took a good amount of time and effort from their creators. And it pays off because unless you’re a developer you wouldn’t know this functionality was powered by BuddyPress.

BP Group Documents creates a page within each BuddyPress group to upload and any type of file or document.
Earn badges based on community activity, and display them on user profiles and activity feeds.
