Reading to children is very important. It's an easy learning experience for children because they
enjoy being read to. Children enjoy hearing the story and looking at the pictures that are in the
book. Because they are enjoying themselves, it makes it easy for them to learn. And no matter
what age they are, they are learning, just at different levels.
Children as young as infants are learning, even if it is just pictures you are showing them. Babies
learn what the picture is and as you talk about the picture they will be listening and learning
language as you talk or read to them. These are the first and very basic reading skills. The books
that would be appropriate for a baby would be simple board books that have pictures of objects
that are familiar to the baby's world.
When children are in their Toddler years, reading is still looking at pictures and learning what
different things are. But during these years letter recognition will begin. And reading to your child
will help them to recognize letters. This is the beginning of learning reading skills. And they will
also be learning language from you as you read to them and talk about the stories in the books
you are showing them. The books that would be appropriate to read to a toddler would be simple
board books and books with big pictures and maybe a sentence or two on a page. Anything more
elaborate would lose their attention.
As children get older, pre-school and kindergarten age, letter recognition is joined by word
recognition. Children will begin to understand that letters put together form words. As you read to a
pre-school or kindergarten child follow along by pointing to each word as you read. This helps to
reinforce the concept that words make up a sentence and when you put sentences together they
make up a story. Books that have more of a story to them are interesting to children at this age.
They still enjoy listening to the other books too, just add the more advanced books to your reading
list too, this will keep them interested in reading.
All of this beginner reading will later turn into a love of books and a love of reading when a child is
old enough to read on their own. Reading to children and later encouraging a child to read on their
own is offering children the world. It will also encourage them and help them in learning in any
subject in school.
