The Story of Flipped Learning
ā€¢ Humble beginnings in Woodland Park,
Colorado in 2006 by Jonathan
Bergmann and Aaron Sams
ā€¢ Aaron discovers a site where
PowerPoints could be recorded with
voice and annotations and then
recorded to a video file
ā€¢ What began as selfishness to save
them time, became a model for other
educators.

Ask One Question
ā€¢ Where in the learning cycle do my students
most need me face-to-face?
Lecture?
Practice?
Discussion?
Application?
Assessment?
Remediation?
Then ask ā€¦..
ā€¢ What can I remove from class by using
technology to increase the value of fact-to-face
time?
Lecture?
Practice?
Discussion?
Application?
Assessment?
Remediation?
Do NOT Ask ā€¦.
ā€¢ Where can I put a
video in my lesson?
Remember:
ā€œTechnology does not drive change -- it
enables change.ā€
Things to Remember:
ā€¢ Do not make a video simply for the sake
of making a video
ā€¢ Pedagogy must drive technology

Purposes for Flipping
ā€¢ Students learning at different
paces (slow, medium, fast)
ā€¢ Students missing important
pieces of information from
class even though they were
"presentā€
ā€¢ Students absent (sick, sports,
etc) and missing critical
lessons
ā€¢ Students not completing
homework fully or correctly at
home because they "forgot"
how to do it from class (or
simply copying from a friend)
ā€¢ Teacher spending most of
class time going over problems
and not giving students a lot of
time to practice on their own
with support
ā€¢ Teacher spending many extra
hours tutoring and re-
explaining to students who
didn't "get it" in class

Student Benefits and Goals
ā€¢ Being absent (sick, extra-
curriculars) and missing content
ā€“ can access anywhere,
anytime
ā€¢ Lesson being taught too fast to
comprehend
ā€¢ Getting stuck on homework
problems with no support
ā€¢ Being bored because content is
too easy
ā€¢ Forgetting old material and
having no way to re-access it
ā€“ Being an active, responsible
learner
ā€“ Working and collaborating with
classmates to deepen
understanding
ā€“ Being in charge of their learning
and their success in the class.
ā€“ Working with concepts they
need more support in
understanding
ā€“ Managing their time to meet
given learning objectives
Donā€™t have to worry aboutā€¦ Can focus onā€¦

Ways to Begin Your Change
ā€¢ Focus on materials where students do
not need you to be present
ā€¢ Record live for one year
ā€¢ Go all-in
ā€¢ Flip one unit per term
ā€¢ Create a single lesson
Ways to Begin Your Change
Consider a single lesson to start:
ā€¢ If you want to have students work on problem-
solving skills, perhaps model problem-solving in
your screencasts.
ā€¢ If you want to guide them through a book
reading, perhaps create an online version of the
lecture to help cue their attention to the important
ideas
Ideas for Videos to Make:
1. A lecture (can use pre-recorded ones) *
2. Video of you demonstrating how something
works in real life
3. Video of a lab procedure
4. Guided problem-solving
5. Homework solutions
6. Pre-lab activity
7. Exam review
Tips for Creating a Screencast
ā€¢ Keep it short
ā€¢ 5 minutes for elementary
ā€¢ 8 ā€“ 15 minutes for grades 6-12
ā€¢ 15 ā€“ 20 for college
ā€¢ Always include an assignment, on-task
requirement (WSQ)
ā€¢ Allow thinking
ā€¢ Add a secret question
Address the Needs (Bradtke/Jaeger)
ā€¢ The need ā€“ absent students ā€“ class question
ā€¢ Solution ā€“ Showme video for instruction

Address the Needs
(BradtkeJaeger)
The need ā€“ teacher feedback
Solution - video grading session for written work

Screencast Tips and Ideas
What is a screencast?
Per Wikipedia:
A screencast is a digital recording of computer screen
output, also known as a video screen capture, often
containing audio narration. The term screencast
compares with the related term screenshot; whereas
screenshot is a picture of a computer screen, a
screencast is essentially a movie of the changes over
time that a user sees on a computer screen, enhanced
with audio narration.

Using your SMART Board
ā€¢ Two choices:
ā€“SMART Recorder
ā€“Page Recorder
SMART Recorder
ā€¢ Make a video recording no matter what
applications you are using on the
interactive whiteboard
ā€¢ With a microphone attached can also
record voice
ā€¢ File saved as a .wmv file
ā€¢ Recordings can be played using SMART
video player or Windows Media player
When to use SMART Recorder
ā€¢ Flipping your classroom
ā€¢ Sample math problems, spreadsheet or
formula to review at end of class or to
view once again
ā€¢ Upload to website for student access at
home, Moodle or wiki
ā€¢ Record student work as a form of
assessment

activity in class
ā€¢ Students working independently at
whiteboard can view and review without
seeking help of teacher
How to Use Page Recorder:
ā€¢ Open Properties tab
ā€¢ Press Page Recording
button
ā€¢ Press Start Recording
button
ā€¢ Complete actions you want to record
ā€¢ Press Stop Recording
How to Use Page Recorder:
ā€¢ Page Recording Toolbar appears at

and pause recording from this SMART
Notebook page at any time
ā€¢ Also play a recording by pressing on Play
button in the Page Recording section of
the Properties tab.
Qualities of Good Recordings
ā€¢ Keep it short
ā€¢ Make sure your hand writing is legible
ā€¢ Students want to hear your voice
ā€¢ Do you want it perfect or tomorrow?
ā€¢ Focus on information that are
foundational skills and the lower levels
of Bloomā€™s Taxonomy
