Welcome to
Year 1
Class - 2017
Before School
Children need to wait in the undercover area
until the siren goes at 8.30am.
It is really important that your child gets to
school on time daily. Coming late consistently
can and does disturb the class routine and can
be quite stressful for your child. If your child
comes late they will need to go to the office and
get a late card.
Start of the day
Please encourage your child to complete these
tasks independently
• Come into class
• Put lunch box, Crunch and sip, drink bottle
and bag away
• Put their Reading folder into reading box
• Unstack Chair
• Sit at their “Pot Spot”
Spelling word drills
Later in the term, students will have weekly
spelling words to learn. Spelling test and new
words are usually done on Friday’s. Spelling
words are provided as spelling drills and your
child will be taught how to read these drills in
class. These drills are provided to you via
Seesaw.
Mathletics
All the students have access to Mathletics in class.
They will be given a password to access Mathletics
at home or if you do not own a computer you can
go to your local library). Mathletics is an important
part of your child’s homework as we set tasks for
them to complete. If your child gets more than 500
points per week for 7 weeks of the term, they will
receive a Mathletics reward. Each term children
have the opportunity to be chosen for a Principal’s
certificate at assembly.
Specialist Programs
• Music
• Science
• HASS
• PE
Children need a hat and water bottle to be taken
to all specialist areas
Oral Language Program
This program complements what is happening in
class and is NOT a Show and Tell program. This
replaces the Pre-Primary news program.
Parent helpers
We have a number of programs throughout the
year that parents can be involved in. Parents will
receive a note when helpers are needed.
Before working with the children, all parent
helpers must complete a Confidential
Declaration Form, which you can get from the
office. All visitors must go to the office and sign
in and collect a badge before working in the
classroom.
Co-Teaching with Flexible Learning
Spaces
• To optimise your child’s learning time and to
provide the best quality teaching possible, a co-
teaching environment is run in Year 1.
• Intensive Learning Tables allow teachers to tailor
teaching and learning to students needs
• Students have an allocated ‘Pot Spot’
• Flexible Learning Spaces are an option when an
activity allows for this
Reading Hub
As reading is a school priority, a significant effort
has been put into establishing a ‘Love for
Reading’ in Year 1. We have developed a
Reading Hub to help achieve this. Please come
and see this fantastic learning space.
QR Codes
We use QR codes regularly in Year 1 across all
learning areas. We have also developed QR
codes to complement our Rocket Reading and
Jolly Phonics program. It is in your child’s best
interest to have a QR code scanner/reader
available on your mobile device. This is a free
app for both Apple and Android devices.
Seesaw
• Seesaw is a Digital Portfolio Program that is
utilised throughout East Wanneroo Primary
School
• Early Term 2, parents will be invited to an
information and start up session to get you
connected to your child’s Seesaw account
• A note will be sent home with more
information, closer to this time
Whole School Reward system
Children receive greenies for rewards. Greenies
are traded for a pinky, pinkies are trades for a
blue certificate which is presented at our block
assembly. When your child receives 6 Blue
Certificates they will then be presented with a
badge at assembly. Parents will be notified in
advance of this achievement.
Dojo class rewards
• Class Dojo is an incentive reward where
children get points for staying on task,
manners, and quiet workers.
• Each child will receive a prize once they
achieve 50, 100, 150 .... Dojo points
• This incentive is a class reward which
complements our whole school reward
system.
Honours certificates
• At times your child may receive an honour
certificate at the assembly. A note will be sent
home to inform you. Please ensure your child
is in full school uniform to receive this
certificate.
Keys to Success
Children who show our ‘Keys to Success’ are
recognised and their names will be read out at
assembly. For the duration of that value the keys
can be seen on the pin up board in the
administration office. Children stand at
assembly for showing that value in the school.
On week 5 and 10 one child from the
Junior/senior school is chosen to receive the
Values prize.
Assembly

your child is on time as we need to be seated in
the undercover promptly.

It is important to pick them up on time.
From term 2, your child will be dismissed at the end of the day and they will need to
know where you are going to collect them from. Please discuss and teach your child
this procedure during term 1.
If your child has not be collected at the end of the day, they will be taken to the office

If your child is absent from school please advise the school on that day or bring in a
written note on the day he or she returns stating the dates away and the reason for
the absence.
If you need to pick your child up early from school or if they are late arriving, you will
need to go to the office first to get a late slip or yellow slip before coming to the

Lunches can be ordered on Wednesday’s. Lunch
orders are placed in the undercover area before

  • 26. Stationery • It is very important for all children to have the correct books to use. Their writing books need to be 24mm dotted thirds, which can now be purchased as a ‘Pack’ from the uniform shop. Year 1 children will also need a Jolly Grammar Student Book 1, as they will use this text on a daily basis. • Please ensure all of your child’s items are labelled • Please DO NOT send unopened boxes containing packing foam from Campion orders.
  • 27. Mrs Kimberley Rocket Readers Children need to read their Rocket Reading books 4 nights a week, Thursday- Thursday and parents need to sign their child’s ‘Signing card’ each night. Children who have read continually over the term will receive a Rocket Reader badge at the end of each term and be part of our Rocket Reader term reward. If your child receives 4 badges in the year, they are invited to be part of our Rocket Reader end of year reward. All children will have a plastic wallet to take home each night. It is very important that is brought back each day and put into the Rocket Reader box provided. (Please make sure you check this wallet as at times we put important notices in for you). For this program to be successful, parent helpers are needed to change books each morning
