Ocean dolphins and whales powerpoint

  1. 1. Ocean Mammals: Whales and Dolphins
  2. 2. What are Mammals? • Mammals are warm blooded. • Their bodies are partially covered with hair. • They give birth to live babies. • The babies look like their parents. • Whales and dolphins are both mammals.
  3. 3. Whales and Dolphins Whales and dolphins have similar parts: ►Blowhole ►Flippers ►Flukes
  4. 4. Cousins • Whales and dolphins are very closely related. • In fact, you could even say they are cousins!
  5. 5. Pods! • Most whales and dolphins live in groups called “pods.” • The pods stay together for protection and work together to catch food. • Just like schools of fish!
  6. 6. How do whales and dolphins breathe? • Unlike fish, whales and dolphins do not have gills. • Whales and dolphins get oxygen from the air, just like people. • Whales and dolphins swim to the surface and inhale air through their blowholes. • Most whales and dolphins stay underwater for about five minutes before surfacing for air. Some dolphins can stay underwater for up to one hour. Some whales can stay underwater for up to two hours.
  7. 7. Spouts! • When a whale comes to the surface it exhales air, creating a cloud of mist called a spout.
  8. 8. What Do Whales and Dolphins Eat? • Whales and dolphins eat different things depending on their teeth. • Most whales have baleen, a special brush- like filter, that is used to catch plankton, krill, and shrimp. • Whales and dolphins that have teeth mostly eat fish and squid.
  9. 9. Fun Whale Facts • Most whales live for about 40 years, but some species can live for over 100. • Whales live in all different parts of the world. Some whales hunt for food in cold waters, but migrate to warmer waters to give birth. • The blue, fin, humpback, and gray whales all share the longest migration route of any animal: going from tropic to sub-polar waters. • Some types of whales can communicate by “singing.” Blue Whales Singing
  10. 10. Fun Dolphin Facts • Most dolphins live for between 20 and 90 years. • Dolphins can live in all different parts of the world. Dolphins can live in both warm and cold water, and some types even live in rivers. • Dolphins have very large brains and are considered to be very intelligent. • Dolphins can communicate with other members of their pod by using clicks, whistles, and squeaks. • They can also use a special form of sonar called “echolocation” to find food.
