3. History of King David and Mephibosheth David looks to show kindness to Saul and Jonathan’s descendants. David and Jonathan loved each other as brothers even though King Saul was looking to kill David. David and Jonathan had a pact that if anything happened to the other, they would take care of each other’s family. King David found Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son in Lodebar and showed kindness to him and restored him to his rightful place in his grandfather’s kingdom. Mephibosheth showed kindness to King David in his time of need. 3 Rita L. Sodipe

4. 2 Samuel 9:1-13 2 Samuel 9:1 And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan’s sake? 2 Samuel 9:3 And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew kindness unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet. King David found out that Jonathan had a son and he was living in Lodebar, a place that was beneath his privileges – being the grandson of a King. When he realized that Jonathan’s son was alive he called for him to come before him. When Mephibosheth came before King David, he lay prostrate before the King. King David called his name, and he answered “Behold thy servant” 2 Sam. 9:6. King David loved Mephibosheth because he loved his father Jonathan like his own brother. Because of Jonathan, King David showed the ultimate kindness to Mephibosheth by restoring him to his rightful place in his grandfather’s kingdom. 4 Rita L. Sodipe

5. 2 Samuel 9:7-8: And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually. 8; and he bowed himself, What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am? After Mephibosheth came into King David’s presence, he told him not to fear because he was going to show kindness for his father’s sake and give him all the land that belonged to Saul. Mephibosheth considered himself a dead dog as he was a cripple and they were dishonored in their culture as someone worthless. But he wasn’t a dead dog, he was the descendant of a King! I chose Mephibosheth because God allowed restoration to him even though he was at his lowest state and was considered nothing. When we think that God has left us, he restores us and sets us before his table and that’s where we continually eat! Psalms 23 tells us that God will prepare us a table in the presence of our enemies. The very people that thought Mephibosheth was a “dead dog” and he had to serve, had to serve him. 5 Rita L. Sodipe

6. Isn’t that just like God?! When people look at us as if we’re nothing, God shows up to show out. The very people that talked about us and called us nothing, God prepares us a table before them and they have to see us eating at the King’s table daily. God also allowed the restoration to be so great, that when King David needed help and thought that he was at his lowest state, Mephibosheth and his servants brought food to both King David and his followers. God restores us, shows us kindness, sets us up, allows us to eat at his table continually and allows us to show kindness to other people as well. To whom much is given, much is required. 6 Rita L.
