Treasures
Treasures is a resource that can and
 should be supplemented.
If students and teachers are only reading or
 using books from Treasures it is not
 enough.
Treasures is a beginning and a guide but
 not the end of instruction.
Student Reading Time
Instructional time should be spent with
 kids actually reading at a much higher
 volume than anything else (teacher talk,
 worksheets, etc)
Across the day, all students should spend
 at least 45-minutes reading texts with 96%
 accuracy, fluency and comprehension

Refer to the Curriculum Guide
Refer to the Common Core State Standards
 (CCSS)
Refer to GLE’s – ONLY Grades 2-5 this
 year*
Gather other books available to students at
 various levels that connect to the unit and
 learning targets in a purposeful way
Daily Reading Activities
Students must talk and write about what they read
 daily.
Books about the same topic should be recommended
 and provided.
All students should discuss and write responses that
 directly link to the text.
If students have spent time writing about their
 favorite part of the text, this might be a good place to
 transition to writing that is directly related to what
 was read in the text.

45 minutes daily – writing workshop


Writing to show learning should be
 integrated daily into all content areas.
Read Alouds
Read alouds at every grade are important
 and should occur daily in all content.
When choosing books to read to students,
 books should be rich in vocabulary and
 should be at least two levels higher than
 what the students can read independently.
Read aloud texts should connect to the
 curriculum in some way.

2012 2013 reading guidelines

  • 2. Treasures Treasures is a resource that can and should be supplemented. If students and teachers are only reading or using books from Treasures it is not enough. Treasures is a beginning and a guide but not the end of instruction.
  • 3. Student Reading Time Instructional time should be spent with kids actually reading at a much higher volume than anything else (teacher talk, worksheets, etc) Across the day, all students should spend at least 45-minutes reading texts with 96% accuracy, fluency and comprehension
  • 4. When Planning Reading Instruction… Refer to the Curriculum Guide Refer to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Refer to GLE’s – ONLY Grades 2-5 this year* Gather other books available to students at various levels that connect to the unit and learning targets in a purposeful way
  • 5. Daily Reading Activities Students must talk and write about what they read daily. Books about the same topic should be recommended and provided. All students should discuss and write responses that directly link to the text. If students have spent time writing about their favorite part of the text, this might be a good place to transition to writing that is directly related to what was read in the text.
  • 6. Writing Instruction 45 minutes daily – writing workshop Writing to show learning should be integrated daily into all content areas.
  • 7. Read Alouds Read alouds at every grade are important and should occur daily in all content. When choosing books to read to students, books should be rich in vocabulary and should be at least two levels higher than what the students can read independently. Read aloud texts should connect to the curriculum in some way.
