East Main - Evangelism Efforts
Personal evangelism is a work that we as a congregation are failing in. We are not
alone though, as the church as a whole is failing in this area. We are losing 18,000 plus
church members and well over 100 congregations each year. Obviously, what we are
doing now is not working. The Bible is overflowing with verses telling us to be like
Christ (1 Cor. 11:1; Jn. 13:15; 1 Jn. 2:6). To be a Christian carries the meaning to be like
Christ. As we read our Bibles, we regularly come to verses that tell us to love our
neighbors. Christ loved his neighbors. He was concerned about their wellbeing and
because of the love and concern, he taught them the gospel. Luke 19:10 says that Jesus
came to earth to seek and save the lost. To be like Christ, we should be doing the same.
We say we love our neighbors, and we have the best news in the world but, do we
just keep it to ourselves, or do we select who we will share it with? God has already
made the decision as far as who we should share the gospel with which is everyone
(Rom. 16:26; Jn. 4:42; Mt. 28:19). We are asked sometimes to, “step outside the box” or
to “get out of our comfort zone,” this is one of those times the eldership along with
Biblical authority is asking you to do just that. If East Main could make the statement,
“we are not willing that anyone in our community be lost,” God would be well-pleased
with the congregation.
The elders decided a little over a year ago to resume East Main’s enrollment in
House to House Heart to Heart. HTH is an eight-page evangelistic mailout filled with
Bible based articles. At the present time, East Main is mailing HTH out monthly to 5000
addresses. But simply mailing out HTH to our community will not yield the desired
results. Because of Covid, we have been delayed in starting some works that need to be
added in conjunction with HTH to help it to be more effective in producing contacts.
We are now ready to hit the resume button and start working to put these works in place.
Our plan is simple-we plant, another waters, and God gives the increase (1 Cor. 3:6). It’s
really a simple model. The difficult work is finding good soil. Here are some ways we
are planning to find good soil or “create contacts.”
New Movers Program:
When someone new moves into the areas where we are sending HTH, first we will
receive their name and address through a new movers list supplied monthly by HTH.
Secondly, they receive a special new movers’ copy of HTH and a postcard with East
Main’s schedule of services. HTH suggests that welcome baskets be made and delivered
to the new movers on the monthly list. If you add a personal visit with a welcome
basket, you will greatly increase its effectiveness. The monthly list of new movers
amounts to an average of 25-30 families per month.

New Mover Basket Assembly Team:
The baskets can be ordered online. The cleaning
supplies (30 of every item in the basket) needs to be
purchased and delivered to the building. Bible tracts for
the baskets need to be ordered. Magnets with East
Main’s logo and schedule of service need to be ordered
and delivered to the building. Baskets need to be put
together so they will be ready for delivery. This will be a
monthly event so several people will be needed to assure
that the baskets will be ready for delivery each month.
Delivery Team:
The area where the baskets will be delivered is a
large area so several teams will be needed for delivery.
With just 2 teams each team would have to deliver 15
baskets each. So to lighten the load we will need several
teams to deliver the baskets.
Additional Greeters:
We will need people assigned for a special emphasis
on visitors, to greet visiting families and get some
information from them.
Contact Creator-Care Team:
We have at this time a contact creator (card mailing
group) in place. The contact list is primarily composed of
local people who are potential prospects, new converts,
or members. Normally these individuals are sick, need
encouragement, or have lost a loved one. This is a work
that every Christian can participate in.
Contact List Team:
Besides the New Movers’ Program, we also get a
contact list that comes out every other month. On this
list there are people that have requested study material or
in home Bible study. Hand delivering these materials
will give us a chance to engage these people.
Wayward Member Team:
This team will focus mainly on wayward members.
They will watch for members that are showing signs of
weakness and needs encouragement. Also, work trying
to restore members that have left the congregation
The eldership has a plan to reach souls and it requires
a personal commitment to evangelism. Absolutely no
Christian is exempt! Our abilities may vary, but our
obligation to teach is steadfast. Think this week as to
what part you will take in this work. We will have a
meeting Sunday, May 30 to get organized. Jesus is still
saying “follow me” (Lk. 5:27; Mt. 19:21; Lk. 5:27)
today just as He asked many while on earth as He was
establishing His kingdom. We need to fulfill our part in
reaching out to the lost so we can all be true followers of
Christ indeed.
