HOW TO SAY THE “RIGHT” THING
Barry Kennedy
Language could be the sharpest two-edged sword ever created. It would not take
much thought to develop a list of all the good and bad that has developed as a direct result
of one’s words. James, the half-brother of Jesus, wrote that the ability to avoid offending
(sinning) with the tongue was the very core of self-control. “For in many things we offend
all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able to bridle the whole
body” (James 3:2). James would continue making his point with three illustrations. First,
was the small bit placed in the mouth of a powerful horse puts the horse under the control
of the rider (James 3:3). Second, was the small rudder (in comparison to the ship) gives
the captain the ability to steer the ship in whatever direction he desires (James 3:4). Third,
was great fires begin with just a small flame, or a spark (James 3:5).
These illustrations are very clear and make the point very well that the tongue can
be very dangerous. On the other hand, the tongue can also be the source of great blessings.
Think about the first time you heard that special someone say, “I love you.” How about
the first time you heard your baby say, “ma, ma” or “da, da.” Of course, the ability to say,
“Our Father who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy name” is language used in the highest
level. How to say the right thing does not always come easy. In fact, for some of us it
seems as if it never comes. Here are some tips to help one say the right thing.
Remember that we are human. Before this point can be developed, one must
realize that this statement does not exonerate one from the guilt of saying the wrong thing.
Facts are facts; we make mistakes. Paul pointed this out to the Roman congregation. “For
all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). The realization that
we are human implies that we will make mistakes. Remembering that we all make
mistakes will help one refrain from offering a tongue lashing on one who may have
wronged them. James explained it this way: “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every
man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath” (James 1:19).
How many times have we spoken words of anger, just trying to return some of the
pain that we have experienced? Many have truly said, “To err is human, but to forgive is
divine.” Most mistakes are made when we fail to “take our time.” The psalmist wrote,
“Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Calmness of mind is the first step
toward learning the art of being slow to speak. If we are to going to be slow to speak, we
must consider the fact that those hearing us are human as well (Romans 14:7). The only
way to realize this is to slow down and remember who we are and how God would want
us to speak.
Remember that God is listening. Many people get so caught up in the empirical
world around them that they fail to consider that the spiritual world is in our lives. This
should not be looked at as being a punishment. God is not in the business of
eavesdropping for gossip or intrusion, but more so as a father listening to his son. “For the
eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the
face of the Lord is against them that do evil” (1 Peter 3:12). Some may say, “God only

New Mover Basket Assembly Team:
The baskets can be ordered online. The cleaning
supplies (30 of every item in the basket) needs to be
purchased and delivered to the building. Bible tracts for
the baskets need to be ordered. Magnets with East
Main’s logo and schedule of service need to be ordered
and delivered to the building. Baskets need to be put
together so they will be ready for delivery. This will be a
monthly event so several people will be needed to assure
that the baskets will be ready for delivery each month.
Delivery Team:
The area where the baskets will be delivered is a
large area so several teams will be needed for delivery.
With just 2 teams each team would have to deliver 15
baskets each. So to lighten the load we will need several
teams to deliver the baskets.
Additional Greeters:
We will need people assigned for a special emphasis
on visitors, to greet visiting families and get some
information from them.
Contact Creator-Care Team:
We have at this time a contact creator (card mailing
group) in place. The contact list is primarily composed of
local people who are potential prospects, new converts,
or members. Normally these individuals are sick, need
encouragement, or have lost a loved one. This is a work
that every Christian can participate in.
Contact List Team:
Besides the New Movers’ Program, we also get a
contact list that comes out every other month. On this
list there are people that have requested study material or
in home Bible study. Hand delivering these materials
will give us a chance to engage these people.
Wayward Member Team:
This team will focus mainly on wayward members.
They will watch for members that are showing signs of
weakness and needs encouragement. Also, work trying
to restore members that have left the congregation
The eldership has a plan to reach souls and it requires
a personal commitment to evangelism. Absolutely no
Christian is exempt! Our abilities may vary, but our
obligation to teach is steadfast. Think this week as to
what part you will take in this work. We will have a
meeting Sunday, May 30 to get organized. Jesus is still
saying “follow me” (Lk. 5:27; Mt. 19:21; Lk. 5:27)
today just as He asked many while on earth as He was
establishing His kingdom. We need to fulfill our part in
reaching out to the lost so we can all be true followers of
Christ indeed.

listens to the righteous.” Of course, the Lord only
answers the prayers of the righteous (John 9:31), but if
He is not aware of what everyone is doing there is no
way to know if anyone is unrighteous. Some may ask,
“How can we be righteous or unrighteous by our
words?” Let Jesus answer that question.
A good man out of the good treasure of the heart
bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out
of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But
I say unto you, That every idle word that men
shall speak, they shall give account thereof in
the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt
be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be
condemned (Matthew 12:35-37).
When time comes to an end, all the works
(including our words) will be brought to light
(Ecclesiastes 12:14). Many people are struggling with
temptations and addictions in this world, yet “. . .God is
faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that
ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a
way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it” (1
Corinthians 10:13). Saying the right thing may not be
easy at times, but when we remember that we are
human, and that God is listening we will be more
prepared in our everyday conversations. And that is how
to say the right thing.
