DO WE REMEMBER?—Part 2

Memories have a way of helping the wise to make the right decision.
The person who does not learn from his past is destined to repeat it.
Sometimes Christians need to stop along life's road and take a good look
back. Although our past might have been winding and steep, we can see how
God directed us by His faithfulness. The Psalmist said, “Be still, and know that
I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth” (Psalm
46:10). One cannot be still and know God without seeing His unwavering
faithfulness. This begs the question, “Does God find us to be unwavering in
our faithfulness?” One of the keys to developing a life of faithfulness is our
ability to remember. We previously discussed two questions first: Do you
remember what sin is, and second, do you remember what sin does? Now
consider two more questions to help us all to focus more toward taking sin
seriously and being able to answer “Yes” when asked, “do we remember?”
Do we remember what sin costs? Here in America we are constantly
made aware of cost. The food we eat, the clothes we wear, the cars we drive,
the homes in which we live, and even maintenance to keep our things going
all come to us with a price tag. The same is true when it comes to our walk of
life. There is a price tag firmly affixed to our decisions. Moses said to the
children of Israel, “I call Heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I
have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both
thou and thy seed may live:” (Deuteronomy 30:19). They had the ability to
“choose” whom they would serve, but the wrong choice would lead to
destruction. The way of sin is not a lifestyle; it is a deathstyle (Romans 6:23).
The cost for sin is death, but the overwhelming point we need to consider is
not so much our own death but the death of Christ. When we remember that
our sins bring death to our souls it has some motivating thrust, but to
remember that our sins brought about the death of Christ, it should cut us to
the core. There has never been and never will be a greater showing of love
than the death of Jesus (John 15:13; Romans 5:8). Do we remember what our
sins cost?
How can we remember to not sin? The answer to this question is seen
in the last point. Remembering that Jesus died for you and me, while we
were yet sinners (Romans 5:8) should cause one to “think twice” before
committing any transgression (2 Corinthians 7:10). The “how” in the above
question is answered by one’s willingness to store up God’s inspired word in

his or her heart. “Thy word have I hid in mine heart,
that I might not sin against Thee” (Psalm 119:11).
This word reminds us of what sin is (1 John 3:4), of
what sin does (Isaiah 59:1-2), and of what sin costs
(Romans 6:23). Therefore, if we truly want to know
how to keep from sinning, we must study God’s
inspired word (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
Another way that we can remember to not sin
is with one another’s help. Christians are to be
watching out for one another. For example, consider
the Christian armor of Ephesians 6:11-17. Loins girt
about with truth, breastplate of righteousness, feet
shod with the gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet
of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit all cover and
protect the front of the soldier, but who is watching
our backs? Of course, one could say God and that
would be true, but God often uses His soldiers (you
and I) to watch out for one another (Romans 15:1;
Galatians 6:1-2). Are we remembering to not sin? Are
we remembering to help one another to not sin?
God has blessed us all with memory, some
more than others. May God help us all to take the
necessary time to prepare ourselves to stand faithful in
the face of the enemy. Jesus showed us how when He
said, “It is written” (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10). The
question is “do you remember?”

Wednesday Bible Classes
On Wednesday, September 23,
the elders have decided to resume
Wednesday night Bible classes at
7:00 p.m. at the East Main
building. We will NOT meet in
the auditorium as a whole but go
directly to our Bible classes so as not to congregate in
the hallways. Barry Kennedy will teach an adult class
in the auditorium. The young married class taught by
Mark Hitt will meet in Room 10 (downstairs). Roger
Sanderson & Tim Davis will teach the college class in
their regular room upstairs. Alex Blackwelder will
teach the 7th
-12th
grades in the big classroom upstairs.
Several ladies (Missy Nichols, Ashley Davis, Kristie
Webb, Renee Childers) will teach the 4-year-olds
through 6th
grade in the multipurpose room. Sherry
Kingsley will teach the 3-year-olds and under in the
nursery. Everyone will be dismissed to the parking lot
following class. We are asking everyone school age
and up to wear a mask, if possible. We are looking
forward to being able to meet again in Wednesday for
Bible class.

Dear family and friends,
Marlon & I want to thank all of you for your many
calls, prayers, cards & concerns in these past several
weeks. Truly these have been some of the hardest I
have ever been through. However, almost every day
or two when the mail came, there were encouraging
words and beautiful cards from so many of you. I still
have pain from time to time, but it is improving. I
thank each of you for your concern and especially
your prayers. To each of you who has dealt with pain,
my prayers are for you that you will have relief.
Many times, we cannot understand what others
experience. If you are sick or suffering in any way,
may you get the relief you pray for. My thoughts are
for you to know that our God is ever by your side.
May you receive the peace and joy of God as you
serve Him each day, with love and continued care for
