Who Are ECO?Information Supplied By ECO Carbon Offsets Why Was ECO Established?ECO was established by a group of people who have a deep love of the environment and itsnumerous lifeforms and wish to see it protected. The environment is under enormous pressurefrom human population growth and the resultant waste from an industrial society. The humanrace took over 100,000 years to reach a population of 1.5 billion people in 1900. It has takenjust 112 years to add another 5.5 billion people and reach 7 billion by 2012.ECO believes that It is time to learn from our mistakes and work out how to live harmoniouslywith nature.ECO’s Underlying Beliefs There is only one World on which we Humans live – planet Earth Better not to destroy the Environment of this world since our Survival depends on it. The downside risks of environmental damage are so high, that it is better to take remedial measures now, rather than fail to take precautions and leave ourselves exposed to the risk. What Do ECO Do?ECO is a combination of a Management Consultancy business and an agricultural-basedCarbon Brokerage business.ECO is a group of qualified and experience professionals, who all share the same passionatevision, namely: To restore a healthy environment to the planet. This includes, land; rivers, sea; species habitats; sustainable food sources; and, of course, a healthy bio-atmosphere. We believe that ‘Time is of the Essence’ in many of these areas. We believe that the most effective way to achieve these aims is through a commercial 1/4
approach.Consequently, our people have experience ranging from agronomy; and native vegetationexperience; – through to carbon farming; carbon consulting; and providing carbon offsets; –through to commercial skills such as: senior management; marketing; legal; IT; and accounting.ECO regard this combination of skills as a necessary prerequisite in order for ECO to provideeffective services in the following 3 areas: Help organisations measure and reduce their carbon footprint Sell tree-based Carbon Offsets to industry and commerce. Assist landowners meet carbon farming standardsECO’s Business PhilosophyECO’s Philosophy is:(i) Plant Trees to Absorb CO2. Trees have a proven record of absorbing (or sequestering)carbon dioxide from the atmosphere over the course of their lifetime. Most of this carbonsequestration, in a plantation environment, takes place within the first 40 years of the tree’sgrowth.(ii) Bio-Diverse Plantations (and not Mono Plantings) – ECO’s policy is to establish abio-diverse plantation of native trees of local species with a seed bank collected within 5kilometers of the site. Unlike Monoculture, such woodlands are less susceptible tomono-diseases and they also restore the land to its original mix of vegetative species.(iii) Protecting the Trees for a Minimum of 100 Years: ECO protect the Trees via a LegallyRegistered Forest Property Agreement. This is an Agreement, entered into between ECO andthe Landowner, validated under the Forest Property Act, so that the Trees are protected andcannot be cut down for over 100 years. By which time the tree will have sequestered /absorbedtheir optimum level of carbon dioxide. The Forest Property Act was enacted to allowlandowners who plant compliant trees to own the carbon rights contained in their trees as aseparate and distinct property right from their property right on the land – subject to a ForestProperty Agreement. Under the Agreement the landowner undertakes to protect the trees andnot to cut them down. This binds all future owners in Fee Simple. This is an important provisionbecause it provides security to Emitters of greenhouse gases who are purchasing the rights tothe carbon dioxide sequestered 2/4
(iv) Marginal Land: ECO use only those areas of Marginal Land on farms, and Not theirPrime Productive Land. Marginal land can be found on most farms in Australia and can occureven on land that is in good rainfall zones. Some estimates suggest that up to 20% of alandowner’s property may not be suitable for cropping or grazing because of poor soilconditions. Such marginal land may be found on productive agricultural land which has zones oflime stone; rocky ground; or ground composed of sandy/shifting soil.(v) Food Security: is a key principle. Prime land needs to be preserved for food production. Food security is one of the major issues that is currently facing the world as we grow from thecurrent level of 7 Billion people in 2011/12 to over 10 Billion people by 2050. This massiveincrease of 3 billion people in les than 40 years is literally an astronomical population explosion– given that it had taken the whole of mankind’s previous existence on planet Earth to reach 1.5Billion people in the year 1900. Feeding all of these mouths will require wise use of all availableland. Hence there is an urgent need to conserve and protect good agricultural land.Accordingly, ECO do not use and do not support the use of prime agricultural land for thegrowing of trees for carbon offset purposes.(vi) Commercial Principles: Forests need to be funded. The funding can come from the saleto Businesses of the carbon offsets produced by the trees. In this manner, economic principlescan be married with environmental objectives. ECO believes that if a human solution is to befound to the issues of Climate and Environmental Change, then it needs to incorporatecommercial & political forces if it is to achieve a critical mass. 1. For Landowners, this means that they can generate ‘off farm’ income by setting aside a portion of their land to grow native vegetation for carbon offset purposes. 2. For Business, this means being able to certify to your clients the size of your carbon footprint and also to provide certificated evidence that you have offset your carbon emissions(vii) The Purchase of Carbon Offsets by Businesses should be the Very Last Step inoffsetting CO2 Emissions.ECO’s philosophy is that business should firstly reduce their carbon emissions footprint beforeeven considering the purchase of carbon offsets to abate their emissions. This also reduces theoperating costs of a business. Not only is this the financially cheaper option, it is also the mostenvironmentally effective one. Only when everything else has been done to reduce your currentcarbon emissions resulting from operating the business, should a business purchase carboncredits to OFFSET its emissions. An up-front purchase of carbon offsets – without a ChangeManagement program to reduce those emissions – is financially wasteful to your business andenvironmentally damaging. In other words, firms should only offset those emissions that are 3/4
inevitable in the sustainable conduct of your business – after everything else has been done to reduce them and all other avenues to reduce GHG emissions have been implemented. This is why we say – “Becoming CARBON NEUTRAL can be COST NEUTRAL”. It can be self funding! LET US SHOW YOU HOW Related articles What Does ECO Carbon Offsets Do?
