Updated Policy Brief: Cooperatives Bring Fiber Internet Access to Rural AmericaEd Dodds
Originally published in 2017, our report, Cooperatives Fiberize Rural America: A Trusted Model for the Internet Era, focuses on cooperatives as a proven model for deploying fiber optic Internet access across the country. An update in the spring of 2019 included additional information about the rate co-ops are expanding Internet service, and now we’ve updated it again, with a new map and personal stories from areas where co-ops have drastically impacted local life.

This report presents findings from a national study of digital inclusion organizations that help low-income individuals and families adopt high-speed Internet service. The study looked at eight digital inclusion organizations across the United States that are working at the important intersection between making high-speed Internet available and strengthening digital skills—two essential and interrelated components of digital inclusion, which is focused on increasing digital access, skills, and relevant content.

America has long been a nation of innovators. The United States is the birthplace of the Internet, which today connects three billion people around the world. American scientists and engineers sequenced the human genome, invented the semiconductor, and sent humankind to the moon. And America is not done yet. For an advanced economy such as the United States, innovation is a wellspring of economic growth. While many countries can grow by adopting existing technologies and business practices, America must continually innovate because our workers and firms are often operating at the technological frontier. Innovation is also a powerful tool for addressing our most pressing challenges as a nation, such as enabling more Americans to lead longer, healthier lives, and accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy.

In the report, PCAST focuses on eight R&D areas: cybersecurity, IT and health, Big Data and data-intensive computing, IT and the physical world, privacy protection, cyber-human systems, high capability computing, and foundational computing research. All of these areas help to achieve the Nation’s priorities. For example, Big Data, IT and the physical world, and high-capability computing are essential contributors to addressing issues within energy and the environment.

JMeter webinar - integration with InfluxDB and GrafanaRTTS
Watch this recorded webinar about real-time monitoring of application performance. See how to integrate Apache JMeter, the open-source leader in performance testing, with InfluxDB, the open-source time-series database, and Grafana, the open-source analytics and visualization application.
In this webinar, we will review the benefits of leveraging InfluxDB and Grafana when executing load tests and demonstrate how these tools are used to visualize performance metrics.
Length: 30 minutes
Session Overview
-------------------------------------------
During this webinar, we will cover the following topics while demonstrating the integrations of JMeter, InfluxDB and Grafana:
- What out-of-the-box solutions are available for real-time monitoring JMeter tests?
- What are the benefits of integrating InfluxDB and Grafana into the load testing stack?

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

The OOR Mission
The charter of the Open Ontology Repository (OOR) Initiative is to the promote the
global use and sharing of ontologies by:
1. establishing a hosted registry-repository;
2. enabling and facilitating open, federated, collaborative ontology repositories,
and
3. establishing best practices for expressing interoperable ontology and
taxonomy work in registry-repositories.
( ref. http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2008_01_03#nid16PN )
... where,
"An ontology repository is a facility where ontologies and related information artifacts can
be stored, retrieved and managed."
4. 4
Accomplishments ...
we’re still here … after more than 5 years!
we do have a recognizable identity … complete with
logo, a nice domain name, website(s), repositories ...
we have a very respectable network of open ontology
repository nodes and collaborators – ref. http://oor.net
we established a very well thought through IPR Policy
We have some very talented and devoted core
members, each spearheading some key aspects of the
OOR development
we meet regularly, hosted numerous events, by
ourselves or with collaborators, that are, in of very high
quality and which helps advance the state-of-the art
5. 5
Exemplars of “similar” initiatives ...
Repositories:
– wikipedia
– IMDB
– slideshare
– scribd … etc.
Registries:
– Birth and Death Registry
– Driver License and Auto Registration
– Passports
– … even the registry for LOD Cloud
Schemas:
– Dublin Core
– FOAF
– EXIF
– ID3
– … schema.org
6. 6
Worries ...
We are still not running a production OOR instance
We are not gaining traction … people just seem to be
just as happy with or without an OOR
...
… not clear if we are getting closer to achiving our mission
it’s just been the same few of us for a long time now
7. 7
Let’s do some serious thinking today ...
do a “SWOT” analysis
discuss what needs to “Change”
develop a renewed “Focus” for OOR
8. 8
Let’s get everyone's top "SWOT" insights for OOR ...
"Strength": one (or two) top "value" you are gaining that
makes you think the time you put into OOR is worth it
"Weakness": if you had thought of quitting from OOR, what
would have been the key reason(s)
"Opportunity": given what we have now, what is the one (or
two) thing we can do that would allow OOR to make a huge
(at least meaningful) impact
"Threat": if OOR would cease to be around in 1~5 years,
what do you think would have been the most major cause?
9. 9
Discussion – let’s consider "changes" we should make ...
what are the "things we should not change"
changes to our "approach"
changes to our "organization"
changes to our "process"
10. 10
Let’s map out a renewed "Focus" for OOR ...
a renewed consensus on the way
we move forward … i.e. renewing our approach
action plans - short/medium term
action plans - medium/long term
review and update our OOR "Priorities & Most
Critical Tasks At Hand" List - ref.
