Global value chains are growing
more knowledge-intensive
• In all value chains, capitalized spending on R&D
and intangible assets such as brands, software,
and intellectual property (IP) is growing as a
share of revenue.
• Overall, it rose from 5.4 percent of revenue in
2000 to 13.1 percent in 2016. This trend is most
apparent in global innovations value chains.
• Companies in machinery and equipment spend
36 percent of revenue on R&D and intangibles,
while those in pharmaceuticals and medical
devices average 80 percent (Exhibit 3).
• The growing emphasis on knowledge and
intangibles favors countries with highly skilled
labor forces, strong innovation and R&D
capabilities, and robust intellectual property
protections.

“The most valuable workers now and
in the future will be those who can
combine technical knowledge with
human skills: programming + ethics,

intelligence, logic + values or

96 percent of the university provosts

believed their universities were successfully
preparing young people for the workplace

But, when recent college grads in the work
force were asked whether they felt
prepared, only 14 percent say yes

SOME SUGGESTIONS
how can we educate a
new breed of
professional?
diverse, interdisciplinary, & all flavors of creative.
a locally relevant but globally competitive engineer
WE NEED TO
DESIGN A
SYSTEM THAT
WORKS!
SOME BIG PICTURE IDEAS
1. Re-visit & balance the mission of the university to serve society
(educate, create, serve)
2. Innovate the curriculum AND the learning experience
(competency/need based, backwards design, stakeholder
involvement) and focus on learning (not on teaching)
3. Develop an R&D + I + e portfolio (local & global areas)
4. Develop a culture of innovation across the university to be a
model to society (CQI, int’l accreditation)
5. Reconsider the “business model” (inclusive, international,
efficient, effective, accessible, affordable i2e2a2)

5 Insights toThink About
• We’re in the middle of a major
transition.
• It is vital that we address the
upskilling and re-skilling of our
people FAST.
• Curricula AND learning
experiences/teaching methods
need to be transformed.
• We have to address the gender
gap in technology jobs.
• The great hope is education.
Saint Francis of
Assissi
“Start by doing what is
necessary; then what is
possible; and suddenly you
will be doing the
impossible.”
what an honor and a
pleasure to be an
engineer!
thank you!
