7. UVOD INTRODUCTION
Ekolo{ki pokret Novog Sada osnovan je 21. Ecological Movement of the City of Novi Sad
aprila 1990. godine, kao dru{tvena organi- was founded on 21st April 1990 – International

ding of the Ecological Movement of the
City of Novi Sad reflected the strive and
desire of the public to make a personal
contribution towards improving the envi-
ronment they live in.
At the time, Novi Sad was the ideal
place for the first genuine environmental
organization (today popularly called non-
governmental organization NGO). In the
early 1970’s, the Environmental Protec-
tion Committee – the first of its kind in
the former SFR Yugoslavia – was establis-
hed. Prof Dr Milan Čanak, corresponden-
ce member of the Vojvodina Academy of
Arts and Sciences, and his deputy Acade-
mician Miroslav Radovanović, professor
at the Novi Sad Medical Faculty, presided
over the Committee.
In 1986, Novi Sad was awarded the ti-
tle of the cleanest city in the former
SFRY, which included all the republics of
our former homeland. It was a testament
to the level of environmental awareness
of the citizens of Novi Sad.
In addition, within the former one-
party political system of our country, the
SSRNJ (Socialist Labour Union of the Peo-
ple of Yugoslavia) – a wide-range social or-
ganization whose name is unfamiliar to
