Irish Immigration
     Grades 9-12
     Emily Zwart
Rational
On the Statue of Liberty, the symbol
of America, it reads
"Give me your tired, your poor
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
These lines hold the promise that so many
         emigrants hoped would prove true.

Editor's Notes

  1. Quote from the sonnet “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus.
  2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jIVOgvZ6IgThis video provides an excellent background on the history of Irish immigration. This video would act as an introduction to the topic and form the basis of knowledge for the students. After this video, approaching the present day issues will make much more sense for the students.
  3. This site is trustworthy for it comes from the larger website entitled the Coalition of Irish Immigration Centers which is an organization committed to working for the welfare of Irish immigrants. This is the blog section of the website and provides reliable information on recent immigration updates and reports.Linkhttp://ciic-usa.org/irish-immigration-blog/
  4. This podcast provides a global perspective on a global issue and includes an interview with people in Ireland about the reasons for immigration in today’s world. It comes from Public Radio International, is a .org website, and works in conjunction with reputable organizations such as the BBC.Link to the Webpagehttp://www.theworld.org/2010/07/ireland%E2%80%99s-new-immigrant-wave/Link to the Audiohttp://media.theworld.org/audio/072820105.mp3
  5. I know that this site is reliable because of its .org address as well as the fact that I know that this organization exists and have heard of people who have worked through them in New Haven. There are many different aspects of this site that students could look through, from the history of the organization, to the services, to links to more informative sites and facts about refugees. This organization helps people from all over the world, giving student a broader and more global understanding of immigration and the struggles of refugees first coming to America. Link if neededhttp://www.irisct.org/index.html
  6. This site is reliable because of its .org address, reliable homepage, and informative about page. The links to external resources all work and bring you to the site that is expected. The history section of this website is particularly useful for learning more about the background of Irish immigration.Link to site if neededhttp://eiic.org/Link to video bloghttp://www.rte.ie/news/player/2013/0130/20147510-undocumented-irishwoman-reacts-to-immigration-development/
  7. This site has a reliable .org address and sturdy homepage as well as external links. This site is important for students because they often associate undocumented workers with people from South of the border, rather than from Europe. This will help to broaden their understanding of immigration issues as a whole as well as the Irish experience.
  8. This graphic organizer was made using Inspiration. This is a visual way of presenting material to students about Irish immigration in the 19th century. This model would be used in conjunction with a lecture and would help students to organize their thoughts. As I would discuss each bubble, they would see the subpoints underneath as well as the visual clips to make the organizer more interesting. Through organizing their notes in this fashion, the students would receive an overall understanding of Irish immigration at this time in relation to different factors.
  9. This webquest would get students involved in their own education and allow them to explore the history behind immigration and Ellis Island to broaden their understanding of immigration in America. This webquest is associated with Georgia College and State UniversityLink if neededhttp://questgarden.com/114/21/0/101115173732/index.htm
  10. This site comes from a reliable .org address and compiles the stories of multiple immigrants. This activity will bring the immigrant experience more to life for the students as they get to connect experiences with actual people and the issue of immigration is humanized. Link if neededhttps://afsc.org/story/storyology-digital-storytelling-immigrants-and-refugees
  11. Actually going to this museum may be difficult depending on the location of the school, but this virtual tour makes up for it. Through this experience students will see actual examples of life in the tenements and learn through the use of visual, audio, and technology-based interaction.Link if neededhttp://www.tenement.org/Virtual-Tour/index_virtual.html
  12. This site is part of digital history, a reliable and useful site for history teachers. The textual descriptions that go along with each picture will help the student in their interpretation of the art. Link if neededhttp://www.digitalhistory.uh.edu/voices/photo_album/photo_album.html
  13. Both of these lesson plans come from .net addresses and are constructed as full lesson plans for the high school level. The sources needed are either included, or available through a link. Both of these lesson plans are well developed and provide interesting insights into the life of an Irish immigrant. The second link opens, but you might have to click out of the powerpoint to see it because on my computer it opens on a different internet program.
