- Welcome to the training module on DMM4000 Benchtop Digital Multimeters.
- This training module will introduce DMM4000 series Benchtop Digital Multimeters.
- As the circuits in embedded system designs become more sophisticated and demand tighter tolerances, you must measure different parameters with a high degree of accuracy to validate your design. A digital multimeter can help on it. A digital multimeter (DMM) is an electrical measurement instrument that can be used to troubleshoot a wide range of electrical problems. With digital multimeters designers can make voltage, current, resistance, frequency, period, capacitance and temperature measurements with confidence. They can also monitor and record measurements over time or environmental ranges and view statistical values to see how the circuit's performance is changing. Digital multimeters provide the feature-rich tools and precision you need for your most demanding measurements.
- Tektronix’s DMM4000 series of 5.5 digit and 6.5 digit resolution digital multimeters (DMM) designed to help engineers debug complex electronics and validate circuit design through precision measurements and in-depth analysis capabilities. The DMM Series integrates with National Instruments LabVIEW SignalExpress interactive instrument software for quickly acquiring, analyzing, and presenting data from multiple instruments. Measurement functions include voltage, current, frequency, period, diode, capacitance, resistance and temperature. Dedicated front-panel buttons provide fast access to frequently used functions and parameters, reducing set up time. The DMMs further simplify operation with a front panel USB port for easy data logging and instrument setup storage. The Tektronix DMM4000 DMM is designed for bench-top, field service, and system applications. The multiple measurement functions, plus the RS-232 remote interface, make the DMM an ideal candidate for precision manual measurements and use in automated systems. For portability, the DMM includes a carrying handle that also serves as a bail for bench-top operation.
- The DMM4000 Series offers a range of models to meet your needs and your budget. They have different specifications in resolution, VDC accuracy, measurement functions, analysis mode, and connectivity capabilities.
- The DMM4020 multimeter is designed with the ease of use. Dedicated front-panel buttons provide fast access to frequently used functions and parameters, reducing setup time. You no longer need to search through software menus to find the function you need. With the unique dual display, you can measure two different parameters of the same signal from one test connection. USB host port or RS232 port conveniently connect to your PC. The DMM4040/4050 can store data and user settings to USB memory devices using the front-panel USB port. Patented split terminal jacks for the 2×4 ohms function allow you to perform 4-wire measurements using only two leads instead of four.
- Easily capture, save, and analyze measurement results from your multimeter with the special Tektronix Edition of National Instrument’s LabVIEW SignalExpress™ software. SignalExpress supports the range of Tektronix bench instruments, enabling you to connect your entire test bench. You can then access the feature-rich tools packed into each instrument from one intuitive software interface. This allows you to automate complex measurements requiring multiple instruments, log data for an extended period of time, time correlate data from multiple instruments, and easily capture and analyze your results, all from your PC.
- Using two wires to measure resistance is convenient, but causes measurement error. You can virtually eliminate this error by using four leads and a multimeter with separate source and measure terminals. The patented split terminal jacks on the Tektronix DMM Series maintain the convenience of using two leads for resistance measurements, but deliver the measurement performance of a 4-wire method. The jacks are completely compatible with standard 4 mm banana plugs. But on the inside, each jack is split into two contacts: one source and one measure. Specially-designed test leads have two conductors per lead, again, one source and one measure. The leads align with the contacts inside the jacks and carry the separate source and measure signals over the full length of the leads.
- In today’s electronics, measuring standby power or current leakage is a common task during debug and design validation. Standby current leakage is often designed into a device. It is a side-effect of products providing “instant-on” capability, consumer electronics with always-on clock displays, as well as power conversion devices such as battery chargers. Accurately measuring low-level leakage currents in the nanoampere range is a challenge for most digital multimeters. The Tektronix DMM4020 multimeter offers a dedicated circuit for measuring leakage currents with a resolution of 1 nA to meet this challenge. Much better accuracy can be achieved using a DMM that functions as an ammeter in low-current applications by using a current-to-voltage operational amplifier (op amp) conversion technique in series with the circuit, as shown in the figure.
- With the unique dual display of the DMM4050/4040, you can measure two different parameters of the same signal from one test connection. The graphical display supports histogram, trend plotting and statistical analysis features. Trendplot™ paperless recorder mode plots measurement trends and graphically identifies the extent of drift and intermittent events. Histogram mode is used to discover stability or noise problems by viewing results as a histogram. Statistics mode is able to view multiple statistical values such as average, min, max and standard deviation to see how your signal is changing.
