1. Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev
Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev (1834-1907) was born in a village near Tobolsk in a prosperous
family. His mother was very intelligent and a good housewife. His dad worked as a school
Director.
He studied in gymnasium and in 1850 entered the Pedagogical Institute in St. Petersburg to
study chemistry. In 1856 he got his Master's degree and was invited to lecture on theoretical and
organic chemistry at St. Petersburg University.
In 1863 Mendeleev was appointed to a professorship. Mendeleev is best known for his work on
the periodic table; arranging the 63 known elements into a Periodic Table based on atomic mass,
which he published in Principles of Chemistry in 1869. His first Periodic Table was compiled on
the basis of arranging the elements in ascending order of atomic weight and grouping them by
similarity of properties. He predicted the existence of new elements.
Dmitri Mendeleev died in 1907 in St. Petersburg. He made a great contributoion to the world
science.
