Little white lies
1. Little white lies is an independent film magazine which has been described as “magazines at the
vanguard of the independent publishing movement.’ it has been publishing since 2005 and is
known for its bold presentation and unique layout. it is sensitive to its feature films, creating a front
cover that usually features the main character or element of a film. the design is usually heavily
artistic, incorporating features from films. Each issue of the magazine concentrates on a chosen
film, but will also include reviews and adverts not associate with the film. The magazine has a
theme which is continues throughout, this may have no relevance to all of the content but usually
corresponds with the film on the front cover.
Little White Lies is distributed globally, but only through order as it wouldn’t be cost effective to
publish lots of issues and send them world wide. The magazine is sold in independent cinemas to
help support the funding of the magazine as they many of their films will be reviews in the
magazine, also it can be found in Independent book shops and sometimes even in WHSmiths.
However customers can subscribe to Little White Lies paying them a monthly fee to get an issue.
The distribution of the magazine is vital as it ill be the companies main source of income besides
the adverts.
Many people buy the magazine not only for the film reviews but the amazing artwork and attention
to detail.
2. Layout
• The first thing I noticed about Little White Lies reviews was that the actual layout and placement
of things on the review pages never change.
• There is always a picture or snapshot from a film located at the top of the review page giving
audiences a clear insight on the film being reviewed.
• The review is spilt into four columns, making the review page looked
structured and tidy.
• A specific font and font size has been dedicated to the title of the film
which is located under the main image on the page.
• All reviews begin with a drop-cap as the first letter. This is used to grab
the audiences attention getting them involved in the review when
reading it.
• Ratings of the films are located in the fourth column and are always split
into three different categories.
•
The designs are heavily influenced by the films
themselves. They are also designed by artists and
graphic designers, creating a unique alternate to
re-used graphics that feature so often in generic
film magazines. This design allows me more
freedom within my creative outlet.
The convention of Little White Lies are that the
image usually appears as a custom, never
featuring an unedited picture.
Issue 38 is an exceptional
example of the craftsmanship
that goes into a Little White Lies
cover. Despite it featuring
nothing specific about the film,
the magazine still published it,
not because it was commercially
visible but creatively stunning.
