1. Cyclones
Objectives of today’s class is
to:
• Know how a cyclone is
formed
• Know the cyclone prone
areas of Australia
• Know how to prepare
and stay safe during a
cyclone

2. What is a CYCLONE?
A huge revolving
storm caused by
winds blowing
around a central
area of low
atmospheric
pressure

3. How Cyclones are Formed
They form in warm parts of the earth
when hot & moist air moves over the
ocean
Cyclones start as a group of storm
winds when the water reaches 80
degrees or hotter.

4. How to stay safe in a Cyclone
Cyclones create strong winds & heavy rains, which can
be dangerous because they can cause a lot of damage.
Here are some tips to prepare & stay safe during a
cyclone

Editor's Notes
Good morning class, today we are going to continue our study of natural disasters and focus on cyclones. Does anyone know what a cyclone is? Tell me what you know about cyclones. By the end of today’s class we will know how a cyclone is formed, know the cyclone prone areas of Australia and we will all know how to prepare and stay safe during a cyclone.
A cyclone is a huge revolving storm caused by winds blowing around a central area of low atmospheric pressure.
Talk with class about the diagram and explain how cyclones are formed.
It is very important that we all know how to prepare before a cyclone and how to stay safe during a cyclone. Because cyclones create strong winds & heavy rains, they can be very dangerous and cause a lot of damage to homes and community members. We will now watch a video on how to prepare for a cyclone and how to stay safe during a cyclone.
Does anyone know what areas of Australia cyclones occur in? Do you know if we have had any cyclones here in Cairns? Most cyclones in Australia occur in Western Australia between Exmouth and Broome (indicate this stretch to class on map) and in Queensland they occur between Port Douglas to Maryborough (indicate on map). On this map you can see the red dots and black dots. The red dots indicate severe cyclones and black dots indicate non-severe cyclones.
