Introduction:
2 Tim 3:16-17
16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful
for teaching, rebuking, correcting and
training in righteousness, 17 so that the man
of God may be thoroughly equipped for
every good work.

Mark 12:24-25
24 Jesus replied, "Are you not in error
because you do not know the Scriptures or
the power of God?
The Nature of the Holy Spirit
John 16:13-15
13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will
guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own;
he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you
what is yet to come. 14 He will bring glory to me by
taking from what is mine and making it known to you.
15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I
said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it
known to you.
Gen 1:2
2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness
was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of
God was hovering over the waters.

Phil 2:1-2
If you have any encouragement from being united
with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any
fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and
compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being
like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit
and purpose.
Heb 10:29
29 How much more severely do you think a man
deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of
God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing
the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and
who has insulted the Spirit of grace?

2 Cor 13:14
14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the
love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be
with you all.
The Nature if the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit in
the Old Testament
Gen 1:2
2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness
was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of
God was hovering over the waters.
Num 11:16-17
16 The LORD said to Moses: "Bring me seventy of
Israel's elders who are known to you as leaders
and officials among the people. Have them come
to the Tent of Meeting, that they may stand there
with you. 17 I will come down and speak with you
there, and I will take of the Spirit that is on you
and put the Spirit on them. They will help you
carry the burden of the people so that you will not
have to carry it alone.
Num 11:24-25
25 Then the LORD came down in the cloud and
spoke with him, and he took of the Spirit that
was on him and put the Spirit on the seventy
elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they
prophesied, but they did not do so again.

Num 24:1-3
Now when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD
to bless Israel, he did not resort to sorcery as at
other times, but turned his face toward the desert.
2 When Balaam looked out and saw Israel
encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came
upon him 3 and he uttered his oracle:
Judg 3:9-10
9 But when they cried out to the LORD, he raised
up for them a deliverer, Othniel son of Kenaz,
Caleb's younger brother, who saved them. 10 The
Spirit of the LORD came upon him, so that he
became Israel's judge and went to war.

Judg 6:33-34
Now all the Midianites, Amalekites and other
eastern peoples joined forces and crossed over
the Jordan and camped in the Valley of Jezreel.
34 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon
Gideon, and he blew a trumpet, summoning the
Abiezrites to follow him.
Judg 11:29
29 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon
Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh,
passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there
he advanced against the Ammonites.

Judg 14:6
6 The Spirit of the LORD came upon him in
power so that he tore the lion apart with his bare
hands as he might have torn a young goat. But
he told neither his father nor his mother what he
had done.
1 Sam 10:6-7
6 The Spirit of the LORD will come upon you in
power, and you will prophesy with them; and you
will be changed into a different person.

1 Sam 16:13-14
13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed
him in the presence of his brothers, and from that
day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David
in power. Samuel then went to Ramah.
14 Now the Spirit of the LORD had departed from
Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD tormented
him.
2 Chron 15:1-2
15:1 The Spirit of God came upon Azariah son of
Oded. 2 He went out to meet Asa and said to him,
"Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin.

Isa 61:1
he Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted,

Luke 2:25-26
25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon,
who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the
consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon
him.
The Indwelling of
 the Holy Spirit
John 7:37-39
37 On the last and greatest day of the
Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice,
"If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and
drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the
Scripture has said, streams of living water
will flow from within him." 39 By this he
meant the Spirit, whom those who
believed in him were later to receive. Up
to that time the Spirit had not been
given, since Jesus had not yet been
glorified.
Why Indwelling?
Rom 8:5-16
5 Those who live according to the sinful nature have
their minds set on what that nature desires; but those
who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds
set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind of sinful man
is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and
peace; 7 the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not
submit to God's law, nor can it do so. 8 Those controlled
by the sinful nature cannot please God.
9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by
the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does
not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. 10
But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet
your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 And if the
Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you,
he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your
mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

12 Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation — but it is not
to the sinful nature, to live according to it. 13 For if you live
according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit
you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14
because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of
God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a
slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship.
And by him we cry, "Abba, Father."
The Indwelling: How Received
John 3:5
5 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the
kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit .

1 Cor 12:12-13
13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body —
whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free — and we were all
given the one Spirit to drink.

Matt 28:18-20
19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit ,
Acts 2:38-41
38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of
you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of
your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
39 The promise is for you and your children and for all
who are far off — for all whom the Lord our God will
call."

40 With many other words he warned them; and he
pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt
generation." 41 Those who accepted his message were
baptized, and about three thousand were added to their
number that day.

There is only One Baptism

Eph 4:3-6
4 There is one body and one Spirit — just as you were
called to one hope when you were called— 5 one Lord,
one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who
is over all and through all and in all.

Baptism with the Holy Spirit

Mark 1:7-8
7 And this was his message: "After me will come one
more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am
not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I baptize you with
water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit ."

Joel 2:28-29
28'And afterward,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old men will dream dreams,
your young men will see visions.
29 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days.

Pentecost
Acts 2:1-4
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all
together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like
the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven
and filled the whole house where they were
sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of
fire that separated and came to rest on each of
them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit
and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit
enabled them.
The Observation
Acts 2:5-11
5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews
from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this
sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because
each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7
Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are
speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears
them in his own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and
Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,
Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the
parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11(both Jews
and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs — we hear
them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"
The Question & The Answer
Acts 2:12-17
12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does
this mean?"
13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had
too much wine."
14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and
addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in
Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.
15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the
morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17 "'In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
The Case of Cornelius
Acts 10
At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a
centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment. 2
He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he
gave generously to those in need and prayed to God
regularly. 3 One day at about three in the afternoon he
had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who
came to him and said, "Cornelius!"
4 Cornelius stared at him in fear. "What is it, Lord?" he
asked.
The angel answered, "Your prayers and gifts to
the poor have come up as a memorial offering
before God. 5 Now send men to Joppa to bring
back a man named Simon who is called Peter. 6
He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house
is by the sea."
7 When the angel who spoke to him had gone,
Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout
soldier who was one of his attendants. 8 He told
them everything that had happened and sent
them to Joppa.
9 About noon the following day as they were on
their journey and approaching the city, Peter went
up on the roof to pray. 10 He became hungry and
wanted something to eat, and while the meal was
being prepared, he fell into a trance. 11 He saw
heaven opened and something like a large sheet
being let down to earth by its four corners. 12 It
contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well
as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. 13
Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and
eat."
14 "Surely not, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have never
eaten anything impure or unclean."
15 The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call
anything impure that God has made clean."
16 This happened three times, and immediately the
sheet was taken back to heaven.
17 While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the
vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where
Simon's house was and stopped at the gate. 18 They
called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was
staying there.
19 While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the
Spirit said to him, "Simon, three men are looking for you.
20 So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go
with them, for I have sent them."
21 Peter went down and said to the men, "I'm the one
you're looking for. Why have you come?"
22 The men replied, "We have come from Cornelius the
centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who
is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told
him to have you come to his house so that he could
hear what you have to say." 23 Then Peter invited the
men into the house to be his guests.
The next day Peter started out with them, and some of
the brothers from Joppa went along. 24 The following
day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting
them and had called together his relatives and close
friends. 25 As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met
him and fell at his feet in reverence. 26 But Peter made
him get up. "Stand up," he said, "I am only a man
myself."
27 Talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large
gathering of people. 28 He said to them: "You are well
aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate
with a Gentile or visit him. But God has shown me that I
should not call any man impure or unclean. 29 So when
I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May
I ask why you sent for me?"
30 Cornelius answered: "Four days ago I was in my
house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon.
Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me 31
and said, 'Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and
remembered your gifts to the poor. 32 Send to Joppa for
Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of
Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.'
33 So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you
to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to
listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell
us."
34 Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it
is that God does not show favoritism 35 but accepts men
from every nation who fear him and do what is right. 36
You know the message God sent to the people of Israel,
telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ,
who is Lord of all. 37 You know what has happened
throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism
that John preached— 38 how God anointed Jesus of
Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he
went around doing good and healing all who were under
the power of the devil, because God was with him.
39 "We are witnesses of everything he did in the country
of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by
hanging him on a tree, 40 but God raised him from the
dead on the third day and caused him to be seen.

41 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses
whom God had already chosen — by us who ate and
drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He
commanded us to preach to the people and to testify
that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the
living and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify about him
that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness
of sins through his name."
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy
Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The
circumcised believers who had come with Peter were
astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been
poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they heard
them speaking in tongues and praising God.
Then Peter said, 47 "Can anyone keep these people
from being baptized with water? They have received the
Holy Spirit just as we have." 48 So he ordered that they
be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they
asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.
The Case of the Samaritans
Acts 8:4-23
4 Those who had been scattered preached the word
wherever they went. 5 Philip went down to a city in
Samaria and proclaimed the Christ there. 6 When the
crowds heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs he
did, they all paid close attention to what he said. 7 With
shrieks, evil spirits came out of many, and many
paralytics and cripples were healed. 8 So there was
great joy in that city.
9 Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced
sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of
Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great,
10 and all the people, both high and low, gave him their
attention and exclaimed, "This man is the divine power
known as the Great Power." 11 They followed him
because he had amazed them for a long time with his
magic. 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached
the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of
Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
13 Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he
followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great
signs and miracles he saw.
14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria
had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John
to them. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for them that
they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 because the Holy
Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had
simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.
17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them,
and they received the Holy Spirit.
18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the
laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money
19 and said, "Give me also this ability so that everyone
on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit."
20 Peter answered: "May your money perish with you,
because you thought you could buy the gift of God with
money! 21 You have no part or share in this ministry,
because your heart is not right before God. 22 Repent of
this wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will
forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. 23
For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to
sin."

  Salvation?
Deut 13:1-5
f a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams,
appears among you and announces to you a
miraculous sign or wonder, 2 and if the sign or
wonder of which he has spoken takes place, and
he says, "Let us follow other gods" (gods you
have not known) "and let us worship them," 3
you must not listen to the words of that prophet
or dreamer. The LORD your God is testing you to
find out whether you love him with all your heart
and with all your soul. 4 It is the LORD your God
you must follow, and him you must revere.
Keep his commands and obey him; serve him
and hold fast to him. 5 That prophet or dreamer
must be put to death, because he preached
rebellion against the LORD your God, who
brought you out of Egypt and redeemed you
from the land of slavery; he has tried to turn
you from the way the LORD your God
commanded you to follow. You must purge the
evil from among you.
1 Sam 19:18-24
18 When David had fled and made his escape, he
went to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul
had done to him. Then he and Samuel went to
Naioth and stayed there. 19 Word came to Saul:
"David is in Naioth at Ramah"; 20 so he sent men to
capture him. But when they saw a group of prophets
prophesying, with Samuel standing there as their
leader, the Spirit of God came upon Saul's men and
they also prophesied. 21 Saul was told about it, and
he sent more men, and they prophesied too. Saul
sent men a third time, and they also prophesied.
22 Finally, he himself left for Ramah and went to the
great cistern at Secu. And he asked, "Where are
Samuel and David?"
"Over in Naioth at Ramah," they said.
23 So Saul went to Naioth at Ramah. But the Spirit
of God came even upon him, and he walked along
prophesying until he came to Naioth. 24 He stripped
off his robes and also prophesied in Samuel's
presence. He lay that way all that day and night. This
is why people say, "Is Saul also among the
prophets?"
Rev 13:11-14
11 Then I saw another beast, coming out of the
earth. He had two horns like a lamb, but he
spoke like a dragon. 12 He exercised all the
authority of the first beast on his behalf, and
made the earth and its inhabitants worship the
first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed.
13 And he performed great and miraculous
signs, even causing fire to come down from
heaven to earth in full view of men.
2 Thess 2:9-12
9 The coming of the lawless one will be in
accordance with the work of Satan displayed in
all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and
wonders, 10 and in every sort of evil that
deceives those who are perishing. They perish
because they refused to love the truth and so
be saved. 11 For this reason God sends them a
powerful delusion so that they will believe the
lie 12 and so that all will be condemned who
have not believed the truth but have delighted
in wickedness.
Mark 13:22-23
22 For false Christs and false prophets will
appear and perform signs and miracles to
deceive the elect — if that were possible. 23 So
be on your guard; I have told you everything
ahead of time.
Matt 7:21-23
21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,'
will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he
who does the will of my Father who is in
heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day,
'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name,
and in your name drive out demons and
perform many miracles?' 23 Then I will tell them
plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you
evildoers!'

         Testament Passage

Acts 2:42-43
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles'
teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking
of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled
with awe, and many wonders and miraculous
signs were done by the apostles.
Example of how Miraculous
    Abilities were Transmitted
Deut 34:9
9 Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses
had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the
LORD had commanded Moses.

Acts 6:5-6
5 This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of
faith and of the Holy Spirit ; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas,
and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6 They presented these men
to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.

8 Now Stephen, a man full of God's grace and power, did great wonders and
miraculous signs among the people.
Acts 8:4-8
4 Those who had been scattered preached the
word wherever they went. 5 Philip went down
to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Christ
there. 6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw
the miraculous signs he did, they all paid close
attention to what he said. 7 With shrieks, evil
spirits came out of many, and many paralytics
and cripples were healed. 8 So there was great
joy in that city.
Acts 8:14-19
14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria
had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John
to them. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for them that
they might receive the Holy Spirit , 16 because the Holy
Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had
simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 17
Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and
they received the Holy Spirit .

18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying
on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money 19 and
said, "Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom
I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit ."
2 Tim 1:5-7
6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame
the gift of God, which is in you through the
laying on of my hands. 7 For God did not give us
a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love
and of self-discipline.

Rom 1:11

Historical Purpose
of Miraculous Gifts
2 Cor 12:12
12 The things that mark an apostle — signs, wonders and
miracles — were done among you with great
perseverance.

Acts 8:6-7
6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the miraculous
signs he did, they all paid close attention to what he said.

Acts 14:3
3 So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there,
speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message
of his grace by enabling them to do miraculous signs and
wonders.
John 10:37-38
38 But if I do it, even though you do not believe me,
believe the miracles, that you may know and
understand that the Father is in me, and I in the
Father.“

John 20:30-31
30 Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the
presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in
this book. 31 But these are written that you may
believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and
that by believing you may have life in his name.
Heb 2:3-4
3 how shall we escape if we ignore such a great
salvation? This salvation, which was first announced
by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard
him. 4 God also testified to it by signs, wonders and
various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit
distributed according to his will.

Mark 16:19-20
19 After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was
taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of
God. 20 Then the disciples went out and preached
everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and
confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.

2 Then the LORD said to him, "What is that in your
hand?"
"A staff," he replied.
3 The LORD said, "Throw it on the ground."
Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and
he ran from it. 4 Then the LORD said to him, "Reach out
your hand and take it by the tail." So Moses reached out
and took hold of the snake and it turned back into a staff
in his hand. 5 "This," said the LORD, "is so that they may
believe that the LORD, the God of their fathers — the God
of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob — has
appeared to you."
6 Then the LORD said, "Put your hand inside your
cloak." So Moses put his hand into his cloak, and
when he took it out, it was leprous, like snow.
7 "Now put it back into your cloak," he said. So Moses
put his hand back into his cloak, and when he took it
out, it was restored, like the rest of his flesh.
8 Then the LORD said, "If they do not believe you or
pay attention to the first miraculous sign, they may
believe the second. 9 But if they do not believe these
two signs or listen to you, take some water from the
Nile and pour it on the dry ground. The water you
take from the river will become blood on the ground."
Is Position of the
Miraculous a Proof
   of Salvation?
1 Cor 12:29-31
29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers?
Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing?
Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But
eagerly desire the greater gifts.

John 10:41-42
41 and many people came to him. They said, "Though
John never performed a miraculous sign, all that John
said about this man was true." 42 And in that place
many believed in Jesus.
Jesus Downplayed the
            Miraculous
John 7:3-5
3 Jesus' brothers said to him, "You ought to leave here
and go to Judea, so that your disciples may see the
miracles you do. 4 No one who wants to become a
public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these
things, show yourself to the world." 5 For even his
own brothers did not believe in him.
John 6:26-27
26 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, you are
looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs
but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27
Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that
endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give
you.

John 6:30
30 So they asked him, "What miraculous sign then will
you give that we may see it and believe you? What
will you do?
John 6:60-62
60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is a
hard teaching. Who can accept it?"

61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this,
Jesus said to them, "Does this offend you?

John 6:66-68 (note that this happened just after the miraculous feeding of the multitude)
66 From this time many of his disciples turned back
and no longer followed him.
67 "You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus
asked the Twelve.
68 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall
we go? You have the words of eternal life.
Matt 11:20-24
20 Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most
of his miracles had been performed, because they did not
repent. 21 "Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!
If the miracles that were performed in you had been
performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented
long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be
more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment
than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted
up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths. If the
miracles that were performed in you had been performed
in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell
you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of
judgment than for you."
Matt 7:21-23
21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will
enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does
the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will
say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not
prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out
demons and perform many miracles?' 23 Then I will
tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me,
you evildoers!‘

Matt 24:24-25
24 For false Christs and false prophets will appear and
perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the
elect — if that were possible.
John 20:27-29
27 Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see
my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my
side. Stop doubting and believe."
28 Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!"
29 Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me,
you have believed; blessed are those who have not
seen and yet have believed.“
The Heard-Hearted are not
      Changed by Miracles
John 11:46-48
47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a
meeting of the Sanhedrin.

"What are we accomplishing?" they asked. "Here is
this man performing many miraculous signs. 48 If we
let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him,
and then the Romans will come and take away both
our place and our nation."
John 12:37-38
37 Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in
their presence, they still would not believe in him.

Luke 11:29-32
29 As the crowds increased, Jesus said, "This is a wicked
generation. It asks for a miraculous sign, but none will be
given it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as Jonah was a sign to
the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this
generation. 31 The Queen of the South will rise at the
judgment with the men of this generation and condemn
them; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to
Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is
here. 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment
with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the
preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here.
2 Thess 2:8-12
9 The coming of the lawless one will be in
accordance with the work of Satan displayed in
all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and
wonders, 10 and in every sort of evil that
deceives those who are perishing. They perish
because they refused to love the truth and so
be saved. 11 For this reason God sends them a
powerful delusion so that they will believe the
lie 12 and so that all will be condemned who
have not believed the truth but have delighted
in wickedness.
Old Testament Parallel
Ex 7:8-13
8 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, 9 "When Pharaoh says to
you, 'Perform a miracle,' then say to Aaron, 'Take your staff and
throw it down before Pharaoh,' and it will become a snake."

10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD
commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and
his officials, and it became a snake. 11 Pharaoh then summoned
wise men and sorcerers, and the Egyptian magicians also did the
same things by their secret arts: 12 Each one threw down his staff
and it became a snake. But Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs.
13 Yet Pharaoh's heart became hard and he would not listen to
them, just as the LORD had said.
Ex 7:22
22 But the Egyptian magicians did the same things by
their secret arts, and Pharaoh's heart became hard;
he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the
LORD had said.

Ex 8:6-7
6 So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of
Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land. 7
But the magicians did the same things by their secret
arts; they also made frogs come up on the land of
Egypt.
Deut 13:1-5
1 If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams,
appears among you and announces to you a
miraculous sign or wonder, 2 and if the sign or
wonder of which he has spoken takes place, and
he says, "Let us follow other gods" (gods you
have not known) "and let us worship them," 3
you must not listen to the words of that prophet
or dreamer. The LORD your God is testing you to
find out whether you love him with all your
heart and with all your soul.
4 It is the LORD your God you must follow, and
him you must revere. Keep his commands and
obey him; serve him and hold fast to him. 5 That
prophet or dreamer must be put to death,
because he preached rebellion against the LORD
your God, who brought you out of Egypt and
redeemed you from the land of slavery; he has
tried to turn you from the way the LORD your
God commanded you to follow. You must purge
the evil from among you.
Ps 78:11-18
11 They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had
shown them. 12 He did miracles in the sight of their
fathers in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan. 13
He divided the sea and led them through;he made the
water stand firm like a wall. 14 He guided them with
the cloud by day and with light from the fire all night.
15 He split the rocks in the desert and gave them
water as abundant as the seas; 16 he brought streams
out of a rocky crag and made water flow down like
rivers.
17 But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in
the desert against the Most High. 18 They willfully put
God to the test by demanding the food they craved.
Jesus wants us to base
         our faith on reason.
Luke 20:17
17 Jesus looked directly at them and asked, "Then what is the
meaning of that which is written:
"'The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone'?

Luke 20:41-44
41 Then Jesus said to them, "How is it that they say the Christ is
the Son of David? 42 David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:
"'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand 43 until I make
your enemies a footstool for your feet." '
44 David calls him 'Lord.' How then can he be his son?"

What have we Learnt?

1.People followed the Miraculous for wrong motives
2.Miracles don’t guarantee faithfulness.
3.The scriptures are sufficient
4.Not even “doubters” need signs
5.The Hard-Hearted are not convinced by miracles.
6.Jesus wants us to base our faith on reason.
7.No Miracle Needed Today!
Exegesis of
1Corinthians 12, 13 &
         14
1 Cor 12
Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be
ignorant. 2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow
or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3
Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit
of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is
Lord," except by the Holy Spirit .
4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit . 5
There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6
There are different kinds of working, but the same God works
all of them in all men.
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for
the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit
the message of wisdom, to another the message of
knowledge by means of the same Spirit , 9 to another faith by
the same Spirit , to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit ,
10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to
another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in
different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation
of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit
, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.
12 The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and
though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with
Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body —
whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free — and we were all given
the one Spirit to drink.
14 Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. 15 If
the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to
the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the
body. 16 And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do
not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be
part of the body
. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of
hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the
sense of smell be? 18 But in fact God has arranged the parts
in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.
19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As
it is, there are many parts, but one body.
21 The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And
the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!" 22 On the
contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are
indispensable, 23 and the parts that we think are less
honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are
unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24 while our
presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has
combined the members of the body and has given greater
honor to the parts that lacked it,
25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its
parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part
suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every
part rejoices with it.
27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a
part of it. 28 And in the church God has appointed first of all
apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of
miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help
others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking
in different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all
prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all
have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all
interpret? 31 But eagerly desire the greater gifts.
And now I will show you the most excellent way.
1 Cor 13
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not
love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I
have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and
all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move
mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I
possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,
but have not love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not
boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking,
it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love
does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It
always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always
perseveres.
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies,
they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be
stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9
For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but
when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11
When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a
child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I
put childish ways behind me. 12 Now we see but a
poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face
to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully,
even as I am fully known.

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.
But the greatest of these is love.
1 Corinthians 14
14:1 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts,
especially the gift of prophecy. 2 For anyone who speaks in a
tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one
understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit . 3 But
everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their
strengthening, encouragement and comfort. 4 He who speaks
in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the
church. 5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues,
but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is
greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets,
so that the church may be edified.
6 Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what
good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or
knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?
7 Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as
the flute or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being
played unless there is a distinction in the notes? 8 Again, if
the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready
for battle? 9 So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible
words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are
saying? You will just be speaking into the air. 10 Undoubtedly
there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them
is without meaning. 11 If then I do not grasp the meaning of
what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and
he is a foreigner to me. 12 So it is with you. Since you are
eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up
the church.
13 For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray
that he may interpret what he says. 14 For if I pray in a
tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit , but I will also
pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit , but I will also
sing with my mind. 16 If you are praising God with your spirit ,
how can one who finds himself among those who do not
understand say "Amen" to your thanksgiving, since he does
not know what you are saying? 17 You may be giving thanks
well enough, but the other man is not edified.
18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.
19 But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible
words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a
tongue.
20 Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be
infants, but in your thinking be adults. 21 In the Law it is
written: "Through men of strange tongues and through the
lips of foreigners I will speak to this people, but even then
they will not listen to me," says the Lord.
22 Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for
unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for
unbelievers. 23 So if the whole church comes together and
everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not
understand or some unbelievers come in, will they not say
that you are out of your mind? 24 But if an unbeliever or
someone who does not understand comes in while everybody
is prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner
and will be judged by all, 25 and the secrets of his heart will
be laid bare. So he will fall down and worship God,
exclaiming, "God is really among you!"
26 What then shall we say, brothers? When you come
together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a
revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be
done for the strengthening of the church.
27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two — or at the most three
— should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret.
28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in
the church and speak to himself and God.
29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others
should weigh carefully what is said. 30 And if a revelation
comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker
should stop. 31 For you can all prophesy in turn so that
everyone may be instructed and encouraged. 32 The spirits of
prophets are subject to the control of prophets. 33 For God is
not a God of disorder but of peace.
As in all the congregations of the saints, 34 women should
remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak,
but must be in submission, as the Law says
35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask
their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman
to speak in the church.
36 Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the
only people it has reached? 37 If anybody thinks he is a
prophet or spiritually gifted, let him acknowledge that what I
am writing to you is the Lord's command. 38 If he ignores
this, he himself will be ignored.
39 Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not
forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But everything should be done
in a fitting and orderly way.

The Challenge
 for us Today
Acts 17:10-12
10 As soon as it was night, the brothers sent Paul and Silas
away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish
synagogue. 11 Now the Bereans were of more noble
character than the Thessalonians, for they received the
message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures
every day to see if what Paul said was true. 12 Many of the
Jews believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek
women and many Greek men.
Jer 8:12
From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for
gain;prophets and priests alike,all practice deceit. 11
They dress the wound of my people as though it were
not serious."Peace, peace," they say, when there is no
peace. 12 Are they ashamed of their loathsome
conduct? No, they have no shame at all;they do not
even know how to blush.
Jer 23:9-40
9 Concerning the prophets :
My heart is broken within me;all my bones tremble.I am
like a drunken man,like a man overcome by wine,because
of the LORDand his holy words. 10 The land is full of
adulterers;because of the curse the land lies parched and
the pastures in the desert are withered. The [ prophets ]
follow an evil course and use their power unjustly.
11 "Both prophet and priest are godless;even in my
temple I find their wickedness," declares the LORD. 12
"Therefore their path will become slippery;they will be
banished to darkness and there they will fall.I will bring
disaster on them in the year they are punished," declares
the LORD.
13 "Among the prophets of Samaria I saw this
repulsive thing:They prophesied by Baal and led my
people Israel astray. 14 And among the prophets of
Jerusalem I have seen something horrible:They
commit adultery and live a lie. They strengthen the
hands of evildoers,so that no one turns from his
wickedness. They are all like Sodom to me;the people
of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah."
15 Therefore, this is what the LORD Almighty says
concerning the prophets :
"I will make them eat bitter food and drink poisoned
water, because from the prophets of Jerusalem
ungodliness has spread throughout the land."
16 This is what the LORD Almighty says:
"Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to
you;they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from
their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD. 17 They
keep saying to those who despise me,'The LORD says: You will
have peace.'And to all who follow the stubbornness of their
hearts they say, 'No harm will come to you.' 18 But which of
them has stood in the council of the LORDto see or to hear his
word?Who has listened and heard his word? 19 See, the
storm of the LORDwill burst out in wrath,a whirlwind swirling
down on the heads of the wicked. 20 The anger of the LORD
will not turn back until he fully accomplishes the purposes of
his heart. In days to come you will understand it clearly. 21 I
did not send these prophets ,yet they have run with their
message;I did not speak to them, yet they have prophesied.
22 But if they had stood in my council, they would have
proclaimed my words to my people and would have turned
them from their evil ways and from their evil deeds.
23 "Am I only a God nearby," declares the LORD,"and not a
God far away? 24 Can anyone hide in secret places so that I
cannot see him?" declares the LORD."Do not I fill heaven and
earth?" declares the LORD.
25 "I have heard what the prophets say who prophesy lies in
my name. They say, 'I had a dream! I had a dream!' 26 How
long will this continue in the hearts of these lying prophets ,
who prophesy the delusions of their own minds? 27 They
think the dreams they tell one another will make my people
forget my name, just as their fathers forgot my name through
Baal worship. 28 Let the prophet who has a dream tell his
dream, but let the one who has my word speak it faithfully.
For what has straw to do with grain?" declares the LORD.
29 "Is not my word like fire," declares the LORD, "and like a
hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?
30 "Therefore," declares the LORD, "I am against the prophets
who steal from one another words supposedly from me. 31
Yes," declares the LORD, "I am against the prophets who wag
their own tongues and yet declare, 'The LORD declares.' 32
Indeed, I am against those who prophesy false dreams,"
declares the LORD. "They tell them and lead my people astray
with their reckless lies, yet I did not send or appoint them.
They do not benefit these people in the least," declares the
LORD.
33 "When these people, or a prophet or a priest, ask you,
'What is the oracle of the LORD?' say to them, 'What oracle? I
will forsake you, declares the LORD.' 34 If a prophet or a priest
or anyone else claims, 'This is the oracle of the LORD,' I will
punish that man and his household.
35 This is what each of you keeps on saying to his friend or
relative: 'What is the LORD's answer?' or 'What has the LORD
spoken?' 36 But you must not mention 'the oracle of the
LORD' again, because every man's own word becomes his
oracle and so you distort the words of the living God, the
LORD Almighty, our God. 37 This is what you keep saying to a
prophet: 'What is the LORD's answer to you?' or 'What has
the LORD spoken?' 38 Although you claim, 'This is the oracle
of the LORD,' this is what the LORD says: You used the words,
'This is the oracle of the LORD,' even though I told you that
you must not claim, 'This is the oracle of the LORD.' 39
Therefore, I will surely forget you and cast you out of my
presence along with the city I gave to you and your fathers. 40
I will bring upon you everlasting disgrace — everlasting shame
that will not be forgotten."

The Holy Spirit and You

  • 3. Areas to Cover: • The Nature of the Holy Spirit • The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament • The Indwelling of the Spirit • The Baptism with the Holy Spirit • The Miraculous Abilities of the Holy Spirit • Tongue Speaking • Prophesy • Laying of Hands • Devine Healing • Exegesis of 1Corinthians 12, 13 & 14 • Warnings for Today
  • 4. Introduction: 2 Tim 3:16-17 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. Mark 12:24-25 24 Jesus replied, "Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?
  • 5. The Nature of the Holy Spirit John 16:13-15 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.
  • 6. Gen 1:2 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. Phil 2:1-2 If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.
  • 7. Heb 10:29 29 How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 2 Cor 13:14 14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
  • 8. The Nature if the Holy Spirit 1. A He and not an ‘IT’ 2.The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God 3. Third Person in the Godhead 4. A fellow 5. Inanimate 6.The Holy Spirit can be Abused
  • 9. The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament
  • 10. Gen 1:2 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. Num 11:16-17 16 The LORD said to Moses: "Bring me seventy of Israel's elders who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people. Have them come to the Tent of Meeting, that they may stand there with you. 17 I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take of the Spirit that is on you and put the Spirit on them. They will help you carry the burden of the people so that you will not have to carry it alone.
  • 11. Num 11:24-25 25 Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and he took of the Spirit that was on him and put the Spirit on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did not do so again. Num 24:1-3 Now when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he did not resort to sorcery as at other times, but turned his face toward the desert. 2 When Balaam looked out and saw Israel encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came upon him 3 and he uttered his oracle:
  • 12. Judg 3:9-10 9 But when they cried out to the LORD, he raised up for them a deliverer, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, who saved them. 10 The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, so that he became Israel's judge and went to war. Judg 6:33-34 Now all the Midianites, Amalekites and other eastern peoples joined forces and crossed over the Jordan and camped in the Valley of Jezreel. 34 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet, summoning the Abiezrites to follow him.
  • 13. Judg 11:29 29 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites. Judg 14:6 6 The Spirit of the LORD came upon him in power so that he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat. But he told neither his father nor his mother what he had done.
  • 14. 1 Sam 10:6-7 6 The Spirit of the LORD will come upon you in power, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed into a different person. 1 Sam 16:13-14 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power. Samuel then went to Ramah. 14 Now the Spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD tormented him.
  • 15. 2 Chron 15:1-2 15:1 The Spirit of God came upon Azariah son of Oded. 2 He went out to meet Asa and said to him, "Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. Isa 61:1 he Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, Luke 2:25-26 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
  • 16. The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit
  • 17. John 7:37-39 37 On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
  • 18. Why Indwelling? Rom 8:5-16 5 Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; 7 the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. 8 Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.
  • 19. 9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you. 12 Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation — but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14 because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father."

  • 32. The Case of Cornelius Acts 10 At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment. 2 He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. 3 One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, "Cornelius!" 4 Cornelius stared at him in fear. "What is it, Lord?" he asked.
  • 33. The angel answered, "Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. 5 Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. 6 He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea." 7 When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants. 8 He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa.
  • 34. 9 About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. 10 He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. 11 He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. 12 It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. 13 Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat." 14 "Surely not, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have never eaten anything impure or unclean."
  • 35. 15 The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean." 16 This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven. 17 While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon's house was and stopped at the gate. 18 They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there. 19 While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Simon, three men are looking for you. 20 So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them." 21 Peter went down and said to the men, "I'm the one you're looking for. Why have you come?"
  • 36. 22 The men replied, "We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to have you come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say." 23 Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests. The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa went along. 24 The following day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. 25 As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence. 26 But Peter made him get up. "Stand up," he said, "I am only a man myself."

May I ask why you sent for me?" 30 Cornelius answered: "Four days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me 31 and said, 'Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor. 32 Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. Ps 78:11-18 11 They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had shown them. 12 He did miracles in the sight of their fathers in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan. 13 He divided the sea and led them through;he made the water stand firm like a wall. 14 He guided them with the cloud by day and with light from the fire all night. 15 He split the rocks in the desert and gave them water as abundant as the seas; 16 he brought streams out of a rocky crag and made water flow down like rivers. 17 But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in the desert against the Most High. 18 They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved.

It asks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here.

  • 87. 1 Cor 12 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant. 2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3 Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit . 4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit . 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit , 9 to another faith by the same Spirit , to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit ,
  • 88. 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit , and he gives them to each one, just as he determines. 12 The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body — whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free — and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. 15 If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body
  • 89. . 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!" 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it,
  • 90. 25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28 And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you the most excellent way.
  • 91. 1 Cor 13 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
  • 92. 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12 Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
  • 93. 1 Corinthians 14 14:1 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. 2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit . 3 But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified. 6 Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?
  • 94. 7 Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the flute or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? 8 Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle? 9 So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. 10 Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. 11 If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and he is a foreigner to me. 12 So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church. 13 For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
  • 95. 15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit , but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit , but I will also sing with my mind. 16 If you are praising God with your spirit , how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand say "Amen" to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying? 17 You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified. 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue. 20 Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults. 21 In the Law it is written: "Through men of strange tongues and through the lips of foreigners I will speak to this people, but even then they will not listen to me," says the Lord.
  • 96. 22 Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers. 23 So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? 24 But if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand comes in while everybody is prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be judged by all, 25 and the secrets of his heart will be laid bare. So he will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, "God is really among you!" 26 What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church.
  • 97. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two — or at the most three — should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God. 29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said. 30 And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. 31 For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. 32 The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. 33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace. As in all the congregations of the saints, 34 women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says
  • 98. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. 36 Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? 37 If anybody thinks he is a prophet or spiritually gifted, let him acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord's command. 38 If he ignores this, he himself will be ignored. 39 Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.

On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue. 11 Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. 12 Many of the Jews believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.

Jer 8:12 From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain;prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit. 11 They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious."Peace, peace," they say, when there is no peace. 12 Are they ashamed of their loathsome conduct? No, they have no shame at all;they do not even know how to blush.
  • 107. Jer 23:9-40 9 Concerning the prophets : My heart is broken within me;all my bones tremble.I am like a drunken man, like a man overcome by wine, because of the LORDand his holy words. 10 The land is full of adulterers;because of the curse the land lies parched and the pastures in the desert are withered. The [ prophets ] follow an evil course and use their power unjustly. 11 "Both prophet and priest are godless;even in my temple I find their wickedness," declares the LORD. 12 "Therefore their path will become slippery;they will be banished to darkness and there they will fall.I will bring disaster on them in the year they are punished," declares the LORD.
  • 108. 13 "Among the prophets of Samaria I saw this repulsive thing:They prophesied by Baal and led my people Israel astray. 14 And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen something horrible:They commit adultery and live a lie. They strengthen the hands of evildoers,so that no one turns from his wickedness. They are all like Sodom to me;the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah." 15 Therefore, this is what the LORD Almighty says concerning the prophets : "I will make them eat bitter food and drink poisoned water, because from the prophets of Jerusalem ungodliness has spread throughout the land."
  • 109. 16 This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you;they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD. 17 They keep saying to those who despise me,'The LORD says: You will have peace.'And to all who follow the stubbornness of their hearts they say, 'No harm will come to you.' 18 But which of them has stood in the council of the LORDto see or to hear his word?Who has listened and heard his word? 19 See, the storm of the LORDwill burst out in wrath,a whirlwind swirling down on the heads of the wicked. 20 The anger of the LORD will not turn back until he fully accomplishes the purposes of his heart. In days to come you will understand it clearly. 21 I did not send these prophets ,yet they have run with their message;I did not speak to them, yet they have prophesied.
  • 110. 22 But if they had stood in my council, they would have proclaimed my words to my people and would have turned them from their evil ways and from their evil deeds. 23 "Am I only a God nearby," declares the LORD,"and not a God far away? 24 Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see him?" declares the LORD."Do not I fill heaven and earth?" declares the LORD. 25 "I have heard what the prophets say who prophesy lies in my name. They say, 'I had a dream! I had a dream!' 26 How long will this continue in the hearts of these lying prophets , who prophesy the delusions of their own minds? 27 They think the dreams they tell one another will make my people forget my name, just as their fathers forgot my name through Baal worship. 28 Let the prophet who has a dream tell his dream, but let the one who has my word speak it faithfully. For what has straw to do with grain?" declares the LORD.
  • 111. 29 "Is not my word like fire," declares the LORD, "and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces? 30 "Therefore," declares the LORD, "I am against the prophets who steal from one another words supposedly from me. 31 Yes," declares the LORD, "I am against the prophets who wag their own tongues and yet declare, 'The LORD declares.' 32 Indeed, I am against those who prophesy false dreams," declares the LORD. "They tell them and lead my people astray with their reckless lies, yet I did not send or appoint them. They do not benefit these people in the least," declares the LORD. 33 "When these people, or a prophet or a priest, ask you, 'What is the oracle of the LORD?' say to them, 'What oracle? I will forsake you, declares the LORD.' 34 If a prophet or a priest or anyone else claims, 'This is the oracle of the LORD,' I will punish that man and his household.
  • 112. 35 This is what each of you keeps on saying to his friend or relative: 'What is the LORD's answer?' or 'What has the LORD spoken?' 36 But you must not mention 'the oracle of the LORD' again, because every man's own word becomes his oracle and so you distort the words of the living God, the LORD Almighty, our God. 37 This is what you keep saying to a prophet: 'What is the LORD's answer to you?' or 'What has the LORD spoken?' 38 Although you claim, 'This is the oracle of the LORD,' this is what the LORD says: You used the words, 'This is the oracle of the LORD,' even though I told you that you must not claim, 'This is the oracle of the LORD.' 39 Therefore, I will surely forget you and cast you out of my presence along with the city I gave to you and your fathers. 40 I will bring upon you everlasting disgrace — everlasting shame that will not be forgotten."
