The Classification Song Animals belong in a classBut not because they get bad gradesAnimal classes are groups of crittersAlike in important waysWe are going to give you cluesSo you can figure outWhich of the six main animal classesThat we're talking aboutThe first class of animals is covered with hairAnd they live almost anywhereThey've got warm blood and their babies drink milkAnd they sweat when it's hot out thereWhat is the animal, animal class? MAMMALS
The next class is lumped togetherBecause their bodies are covered with feathersTheir babies are hatched from hard-shelled eggsAnd some migrate with the weatherWhat is the animal, animal class?To breathe under water with gillsIs a pretty impressive skillFins and scales and powerful tailsMake ocean living idealWhat is the animal, animal class? The Classification Song The critters with scaly skinAre cold-blooded and born on landSnakes and turtles and crocodilesLay eggs like the rest of themWhat is the animal, animal class?These guys are born in the waterAnd at first they breathe like a fishWhen they grow up their gills become lungsAnd they can live on land if they wishWhat is the animal, animal class? Let’s Classify a Bobcat and a Lion Why do the animals split at Genus? What is the Scientific name for the bobcat? What is the Scientific name for the lion? Who designed this system and why?
Animals are grouped into 2 categories Invertebrates Vertebrates
	What are the different animal phyla? 	Sponges 		       Cnidarians Platyhelminthes Nematoda Mollusca Annelida Arthropoda Chordata
Final Product	 Powerpoint Binder with all group work and research
Animal Project Groups of 3 Choose an animal group: (RANDOM) Each individual student will research a specific animal or type of animal that belongs to the animal group.   [For example: Animal group-Fish/ Individuals: 1) bony fish 2) cartilaginous fish Teach the class in a 20 minute interactive, multimedia presentation No one may read off of their notes! If PowerPoint, only  10-15 words/slide + PICTURES!
SOURCES Use a variety of sources (minimum 12).   			-3 internet sources (maximum) 			-3 journal articles(database is fine)			 			-3 book sources					 			-3 magazine/newspaper articles (Database is fine) BONUS: interview a person/scientist who is an expert on your animal (25 enrichment points with a signature and thank you letter) Students must keep a flash drive to put all typed written work on. This must be with student at all times.

Assignments and Grading: WEEK 1 Assignments		Due Date All assignments can be turned in early for a bonus 2 points Students must keep a flash drive to put all typed written work on. This must be with student at all times.   1. Parent Signature: Animal Project handout (this paper on top) and flashdriveto save work 	Friday, April 24 - This will serve as your checklist	EACH PERSON				5 points   2. Library Research list  EACH PERSONFriday, April 24 	-What does the school library have that can help you?				5 points 	-Make a list of books, articles, websites that may be useful in the future of this project   3. Annotated Bibliography of internet sites GROUP 		-Attach the pages of the website you will be using	Friday, April 24 		-must include a detailed outline of site				5 points 		-What are you getting out of that site? Correct Bibliography: 	Arthropods. “Arthropod Reference Library.” http://www.arthropod.net/1a010.htm. Accessed 20 October 2002      
WEEK 2: 4. Introduction outline: (Remember to include citations) EACH PERSONTuesday, April 28 -What animal group are you researching? What do you know about this group so far?	10 points  	-What animal or type of animal are you researching within your group?  	-What taxonomy groups (Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species) does your animal group belong to? Why? (What features does your animal have that classifies it in those 7 groups?)  	-What is the scientific name? Remember Italicize the name 	-What information do you know so far about your group? About your animal? How are each of the animals related? Different?  	-What do you want to learn about your animal? 	-What are you hoping to get out of this project?	   5. Food Chain or Web for your animal with PICTURES!!!!GROUPFriday, May 1 			AND20 points	 									(10 points each) Taxonomy picture ( use book to help)	EACH PERSON - DRAW A PICTURE or use MAGAZINE OR INTERNET PICS!!!!!!
WEEK 3: GROUP 6. Annotated Bibliography of 3 books (include copies of all the pages you will use) 								Tuesday, May 5  		-must include a detailed outline of each book of the information             5 points you are getting out of that book?   7. Annotated Bibliography of 3 magazine/newspaper articles (include complete copies)  must include a detailed outline of each article 		Tuesday, May 5 		 -What are you getting out of that article? 		              5 points 8. Annotated Bibilography of 3 Journal Articles concerning your animal (include copies 							Tuesday, May 5  -Must include an outline of each article and answer the following questions            10 points -What types of scientists study your animal? 		-What types of research are being performed concerning your animal?   		-Why is that research being performed? 		-What have the scientists or researches found about your animal?
WEEK 3: GROUP  9.  Animal Group Multimedia Presentation Outline with story boardWednesday, May 6 								10 points 	-Combine all individual animal information together for group presentation	 	-Use the Presentation outline attached to make an outline to present similarities  	and differences of animals in group for each topic (especially anatomy)
WEEK 3: GROUP  10.   All Pictures of each body system of your animal due in a powerpoint. 	Thursday, May 7  	-Information about each organ on separate sheet of paper	      90 points   		-A few words on each slide				(10 points each) The pictures must also include a full citation of where you found them  ( (additional internet cites are ok here for the pictures)		 	1.   Integumentary system – body covering and protection			 	2.   Skeletal system- body support 	 	3.   Muscular system  	4. Circulatory system- Heart and oxygen transportation (veins/arteries/capillaries) 	5. Respiratory system- Mouth  Lungs 	6. Digestive and excretory systems  	7. Nervous system- brain structure and sense organs 	8. Reproductive system – Both Male and Female organs 	9. Endocrine system – chemical pathways
Presentations begin Monday, May 11
Let’s Get Started…… Choose Reliable Group Members 3 people per group Each person will choose own animal in the group’s phylum
Powerpoint rules
Powerpoint Rules Title Slide Uniform Look Author of each slide at the bottom of the slide Bibliographic Slide at end Imported graphics on each slide (pictures, clipart, etc….) Use at least one different slide transition in each section
Powerpoint rules(continued) Font Requirements Use at least one change in font style and color Make Sure font size and color are readable. Don’t crowd your slides (10-15 words only) Have at least one change of text transition (how the words show up on the slide).
What not to do. Don’t detract from your presentation by overdoing the technology. Music/Sounds are good but make sure it is appropriate. Avoid cutesy clipart

  • 13. Animal Project Groups of 3 Choose an animal group: (RANDOM) Each individual student will research a specific animal or type of animal that belongs to the animal group. [For example: Animal group-Fish/ Individuals: 1) bony fish 2) cartilaginous fish Teach the class in a 20 minute interactive, multimedia presentation No one may read off of their notes! If PowerPoint, only 10-15 words/slide + PICTURES!

Thursday, May 7 -Information about each organ on separate sheet of paper 90 points -A few words on each slide (10 points each) The pictures must also include a full citation of where you found them ( (additional internet cites are ok here for the pictures) 1. Integumentary system – body covering and protection 2. Skeletal system- body support 3. Muscular system 4. Circulatory system- Heart and oxygen transportation (veins/arteries/capillaries) 5.
