- Enlighten: from project to service Enlighten was launched in April 2006 [reflected Glasgow role in the Scottish Enlightenment] The new name signalled a clear distinction from the earlier project (not an acronym) and there is a rich selection of words with the prefix En which we are using liberally (as you’ll see later) It included the repository and the support which the Library offered Appointment of new staff to manage deposits and to check copyright Senior Management Support Core Strategic Aim for the Library Repository staffing Library No full time Repository Manager(s) Advocacy Manager (P/T) Service Development Manager (P/T) Cataloguing staff IT Services IT Specialist(s) Research and Enterprise Academic Departments Incremental approach to embedding Open Access in the University’s consciousness: taking Scottish OA declaration as starting point we lobbied for a University position on OA – got first statement approved by Senate in 2006 Impact of the statement Increased awareness of the existence of a repository here at Glasgow Significant increase in number of staff depositing content Significant increase in the range of content across the University The repository is seen an institutional initiative NOT a library initiative But, not enough… and not a Mandate What changed between 2006 and 2008 – the RAE
- RAE 2008 Library managed publications. Very time consuming and difficult Key outcome: University needs a central publications database Library proposed that Enlighten could be used for this role No confusion for staff, as only one database for publications data and full text Existing publication data could be imported Publication data in Enlighten could be re-used in staff web pages [re-use is a key recurring theme] Opened up opportunity to discuss a possible mandate with senior management No opposition to the policy in Senate Academic colleagues asking “How” not “Why” they should deposit their material Key elements of publication policy Requires staff to deposit the full text of peer reviewed journal articles and conference proceedings (where publisher agreements permit) from start of 08/09 session Encourages deposit of other types of research publication Incorporates requirement for bibliographic details for all research publications from 2008- Also includes requirement for standard form of address for journal articles (very important when you have a Medical Faculty, and has had some degree of success).

- New rich record format which we be launched in early 2011 – includes links to funders, embeds Library discovery tool Find More [OpenURL Resolver], has download statistics for each full text record and may include Thomson Reuters Researcher ID (which some staff love and use assiduously) and citation information (bit contentious) from WoS and Incites. - This is an example of a staff profile in the School of Law, the publications come from Enlighten. Ultimate intention for the University is that Enlighten should be used to populate all staff web pages, so that we reduce duplication of effort and the work required across the University. It is now possible for us to dynamically pull publications out of Enlighten and populate the University’s staff A-Z with publications data. Intention also that central systems will be used to provide data for exercises such as PDR – so publications will be drawn from Enlighten. Part of our 3 R’s – Reuse, reuse, reuse

- Wide range of supporting and explanatory text was added, provided by Research and Enterprise. Again, the EPrints add-on was very configurable and we were able to include very full guidance (and examples).
