3. Dilution water
Wastewater
Wastewater is continuously pumped through a sample bypass. The built-in
pump continuously feeds a small stream of wastewater from the bypass to
the bioreactor. Before reaching the bioreactor, the wastewater stream is
diluted with oxygen-saturated dilution water. Inside the bioreactor, micro-
organisms grow inside small plastic cylinders where they are protected
against mechanical abrasion caused by turbulent mixing. The respiration
rate of the microbial population is automatically maintained at a constant
level by a feedback loop that varies the dilution ratio. Increasing BOD
concentration in the wastewater increases the respiration rate, which in
turn increases the dilution rate. Similarly, if the BOD concentration level
of the wastewater decreases, so does the dilution rate.
As the oxygen usage varies, the volume of wastewater pumped into the
chamber is controlled so as to maintain the target rate of 3 mg/liter O2
consumption.
The mixing ratio of wastewater and dilution water is used to calculate the
BOD parameter.
Ordering Information
The BIOX analyzer use a turbulent-bed bioreactor to continuously measure BOD or toxicity.
Please use the Water Quality Analyzer Application Questionnaire to assess water characteristics and analyzer requirements.
To receive a complete, operational STIP analyzer system, the order must include:
The correct analyzer model and measurement range.
A sample prep/bypass system (see Sample Prep/accessories section)
Either a free-standing rack, or a hinged bracket for wall mounting
Any other options needed for the specific site
NOTE: Startup is REQUIRED and must be provided by Endress+Hauser service group or an authorized service provider.
