When I was transported to Pulitzer Square, I knew I was
home. I didn’t even have to click my heels.

2. Poetry Surfs!
No one else is on Book Island now. But already I cannot wait to come
back—Thursday afternoon poetry surfs: Hang Ten!

3. In addition to cool public spaces, Book Island has many nooks and
crannies where one can sit and read. Here is a British Library kind of
reading room. Excuse me while I read a history of the Anglican
church.

4. After some time curled up with a good boook, I’m ready for
some Improv! Oh well, none tonight: I’ll have to check it out
tomorrow.

5. An Open Book
• At Book Island I saw placards announcing Shakespeare reading
groups, and writers’ workshops, and poetry readings, but
what I didn’t see were people. I am curious who attends
these events and whether there is an active community here.
If so, then I’ve found a safe space for my creative writing
students next semester to read their poetry and listen to
other beginning poets do the same. Honestly, I didn’t think I’d
have much use of SL for the classroom, but it didn’t occur to
me that there would be virtual readings and improvs; now I
am excited to explore the island.
