1. Tropical Deserts:
Examples: Sahara & Namiba (Africa)
Hot and dry most of the year/ Cold at night
Very little precipitation!!!
Few plants , mostly rocks and sand
7. 2. TEMPERATE DESERTS
Example: Mojave (Southern California)
Hot day / Cold at night - also cold in winter
Little precipitation – more than tropical desert
Sparse vegetation – shrubs, cacti, low diversity

Plants have evolved survival strategies
Drop leaves (dormant), succulent (fleshy), no
leaves, spines, tap root, wide shallow roots, wax
coating.

Animals have own special adaptations
Small, burrow, come out at night or early
morning, dormant during drought, store water in
fat, thick scales, dry feces
