Solution
Carnival began virtualizing shipboard servers using Vmware® vSphere™
running on Dell™ PowerEdge™ servers with Intel® Xeon® processors and Dell
EqualLogic™ storage arrays. The implementation has been so successful at
boosting efficiency that Carnival also adopted Dell PowerEdge and Dell
EqualLogic equipment in its shoreside data center and remote office
operations. Now, Carnival is moving its critical Oracle data warehouse from a
Solaris and Fibre Channel platform to Red Hat Linux running on Dell
PowerEdge servers and EqualLogic iSCSI SANs.

Editor's Notes
Over the past year, you’ve heard us talk about the emergence of a new era in the technology industry – what we’re calling the Virtual EraThis is an Era that is being defined by the explosive growth of information and the need for 24/7 access to that information. Here are a few data points for you:IDC estimates that the Digital Universe will double every 18 monthsIn 2009, despite the global recession, the “Digital Universe” set a record. It grew by 62% to nearly 800,000 petabytesBy 2020, it’s estimated that the Digital Universe will be 44 times as big as it was in 2009 – reaching 35 zettabytesThis explosive growth in information and data is spurring demand for solutions that will give companies the ability to access, consume, analyze and CAPITALIZE on it in order to gain competitive advantage and grow. This is a HUGE opportunity for the technology industry:.
According to recent reports from IDC and other analyst firms, global information-technology spending will be in the neighborhood of $1.6-$1.7 trillion in 2011IDC also believes that the biggest opportunities for capitalizing on that spending will be in 3 key areas: Mobility - In a Forrester survey last year, nearly a 25% of companies polled said that they would more than double or even triple the level of their mobile investments in 2011Cloud – Gartner says that in the next 3 years, IT organizations will spend more money on private-cloud-computing investments than on offerings from public cloud providers. Cloud Computing alone will drive $6.4B in hardware spending.Analytics – with 95% of the Digital Universe being unstructured data, customers are increasingly looking for their technology partners to embed intelligence into their solutions to help them make sense of it all
To address customer rqequirements in the Virtual Era, Dell is focused on comprehensive solutions around end user computing, enterprise systems and services.Supplementing internal IP development with strategic acquisitionsStrategic partnershipsEnd result: “Best of breed solutions”AcquisitionsBoomi – Announced November 2010. With its AtomSphere technology, Boomi offers the industry’s only pure SaaS application integration platform that takes the cost and complexity out of integrating applications by allowing easy transfer of data between cloud-based and on-premise applications with no appliances, no software and no coding required. InSite One – Announced December 2010. Cloud-based medical archiving leader that helps healthcare organizations simplify retention of healthcare data. The InSite One solution helps customers reduce costs associated with long-term data storage and migration and eliminates one of the biggest shortcomings in healthcare today—the lack of sharing of images between medical professionals in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. SecureWorks – Announced January 2011. Perot Systems – Announced September 2009.Compellent – Announced December 2010. Provides highly-virtualized storage solutions with automated data management features, including tiering and thin provisioning, for enterprise and cloud-computing environments.Kace – Announced February 2010. Appliance-based approach to systems management, to save time for systems administrators while saving money for their companies. Scalent – Announced July 2010. Software that makes data center infrastructure dynamic, easily scalable and highly efficient. Exanet – Announced February 2010. Data storage systems developer.Ocarina – Announced July 2010. Innovative storage optimization technology – including compression and deduplication – helps customers significantly reduce data management costs and streamline operations.
Dell’s approach to modernization: Enable custoemrs to spend less on IT maintenance, and free up resources for innovation. We help customers through our commitment to Open, Capable and Affordable services and solutions built on core strengths:Technology and domain expertise. Our business alignment to specific customer challenges. Our flexible engagement model, able to address needs from consulting to complete outsourcing. All delivered by Dell’s people, who reflect the company’s historic commitment to delivering technology that enables and enhances human potential.
Factoids illustrate scale and scope:How did Dell save $200M? (Dell on Dell story) Dell in 2007 was among world’s largest IT consumers, with 6.5K+ software apps, 100K clients, 40 call centers, 80 data centesr, and diverse/platforms/images globallyDell IT team began consolidation/standardization/automation process in 2008 and accomplished:Reduces apps by ~2/3Standardized 97% of systems to x86Consolidated servers ~15:1Automated patching, systems management, software distgributionVirtualized 9,000 servers and eliminated 6,000 serversCumulative savings over 2 years reached $200M, and in 2010, Dell IT team surpassed milestone of less than 50% of IT spend going to maintenance.CHART: SaaS Background (not for external disclosure)
We can engage with customers in a variety of ways, and unlike some companies, Dell Services will not prescribe a predetermined approach. Using our comprehensive portfolio, we can come in for a project consult, or we can be the long-term partner that manages a customer’s entire IT infrastructure. We also serve a broad range of industries with a depth of expertise. For example, in Healthcare, we serve more than 2K hospitals, 30K physicians directly and 200K doctors indirectly. We also serve 70 payer organizations, and each year, Dell Services processes approximately 65M health insurance claims. We are the world’s leading provider of healthcare IT. In our view, the key for helping customers succeed is enabling quality and viable healthcare at Medicare rates. That is going to require all of our abilities to enable healthcare informatics and interoperable information exchanges, and we already are deeply engaged with the industry to create new capabilities for success. For services delivery, we offer on-site services such as account management, consulting and systems integration … to regionally centralized services such as hosting and virtualization … to global delivery through network and security operations centers, applications and business process services, and as-as-service offerings. In short, we bring the power to be flexible, and the willingness to listen and provide solutions that customers actually want.
Over the next 18 months, Dell will build 10 highly efficient datacenters around the world to provide customers access to public and private cloud technologies and world-class IT outsourcing capabilities Bringing together Dell’s technology and services along with an ecosystem of partners, the new datacenters will allow customers to not just outsource their technology offerings but: Provide provisioning and scalability flexibility and alignment of costs to use application development and testing or scalable hosting of externally facing applications through flexible Compute-as-a-ServiceMake unlimited storage available for production environments, off-premise back up and disaster recovery with Storage-as-a-ServiceEnergize application development and testing environments to quickly provision systems with Platform-as-a-ServiceCentralize, secure and more easily manage user data while facilitating a more remote and mobile workforce through Virtual Desktop-as-a-ServiceThese new datacenters add to Dell’s existing global datacenter footprint which includes 36 data centers we manage for customers (5 are Dell-owned multi-tenant sites) .Cloud
In order to help our customers architect, build, test and deploy Dell’s solutions, we will open more than 20 Global Solution Centers over the next 18 months (as of April 2011).At the Global Solution Centers, Dell experts will work with customers to help them make better use of their technology budgets so they can invest less on managing their infrastructure and more on technology innovation to grow their business These Global Solutions Centers give organizations of all sizes another resource to help solve data center challenges through Proof of Concept testing and Architectural Design Workshops The Solutions Centers incorporate:Showcase labs and integration labsCustomer briefings and demos, remote access to integration labsCustomer proof of concepts, solution integration, testing and validationDell-on-Dell “living-labs” showcasing our solutions in productionFeaturing teams of experts specializing inBest Value Solutions (BVS), and Dell technologiesPhase 1 locations: ~12 sites thru Q1 and Q2 FY’12Phase 2 locations: 10 incremental sites over FY’12 2H and FY’13
Converged OperationsTraditionally, operations are separated into silos – networking, storage, servers, security, and in some cases even finer grained silos (back up and recover for different storage). Converged operations is the concept that you start managing the whole infrastructure as one thing. Example is how Dell’s VIS (Virtual Integrated System – see separate fact sheet on VIS) can configure a virtual environment of network, storage and compute from a single screen.Talking Points:We help our customers accelerate efficiency in the Virtual Era with both “evolutionary” and “revolutionary” approaches towards ITAAS. The evolutionary approach recognizes that “rip and replace” is not an option for many IT shops — and the revolutionary approach applies to new opportunities to redesign IT deployments (e.g., application modernization, datacenter consolidation, platform migration and new businesses). We will help customers drive efficiency without compromise in the Virtual Era with standardization and automation to dramatically reduce IT labor and operational costs even as enterprise class cloud data centers achieve unheard of levels of density.
We have been applying standardization, consolidation and automation with customers for years, with dramatic results. For example, we helped Salesforce.com standardize on a technology platform, which reduced their associated costs by a factor of 20X … and doubled their database performance.Under the principle of consolidation, we worked with Emerson, the electronics distributor, to eliminate 3,600 servers. We consolidated approximately 135 data centers into just four sites … and we cut their Windows server operating costs by 15% annually. At 7-11, huge chain of neighborhood convenience stores, we deployed automated services and remote management. Now, 7-11 can prep new equipment and deploy new servers on their own, in a matter of hours.Productivity of staff in the field increased 30 percent, while associated IT management costs dropped by more than 80 percent! What can standardizing, consolidating and automating do for you?Set foundation for Intelligent Data ManagementLeverage existing and new investmentsCollapse time, resources and skills
Revenue is a great way to measure success, but we can also judge how we are doing based on industry recognition. The Gartner rankings, for instance, are very influential as customers select potential providers, and this shows we’re #1 in IT services for healthcare, #2 for computer support in education, and that we are strong in data center outsourcing, hosted virtual desktop, and other areas. We are also proud of recognition in Asia, including recognition as one of the Great Places to Work in India, and a Top 10 IT Consulting Firm in China. Our strength as an outsourcing provider is illustrated by the numerous Outsourcing Excellence Awards we have won. These are the most prestigious awards in the outsourcing industry, and we have won 7 of them since 2004.Readers of SC Magazine have selected Dell SecureWorks as the best managed security services provider in the U.S. and Europe.
Virtualization is the fastest growing trend in enterprise computing and is a key foundational element of building an efficient datacenterVirtualization promises to abstract away the complexity of managing hardware so customers can instead focus on managing the applications and services that run on the hardwareBut managing virtual environments comes with its own complexities. [we should add an analyst stat here about virtualization adoption rates]To make the task of deploying and managing virtualized environments easier, Dell has launched vStart– a simple way to purchase a complete virtual infrastructure solution delivered completely ready to run physical and virtual workloadsThis pre-assembled solution includes PowerEdge servers, Dell EqualLogic storage, PowerConnect switches, deployment services, hypervisors, and essential virtualization management extensions needed to run up to 100 or 200 VMware virtual machines from a single management environmentThe pre-packaged rack comes as a single unit, wired, cabled and ready to deploy, providing customers with a smarter and faster path to building out the infrastructure required to host virtual machines
At Dell, we know that our customers are looking to build next-generation datacenter and private clouds based on heterogeneous environments and we think that’s a good thing!Contrary to HP’s “go-at-it-alone” strategy, Dell is actually bringing our partners closer to help deliver solutions that don’t lock our customers in and give them the flexibility to innovate their business without having to rip-and-replaceSo, in addition to vStart, we’re also expanding our partnership with Microsoft to deliver virtualization, management and private cloud solutions based on Hyper-V to our customersOver the next 3 years, we will be working closely with Microsoft on integrating Dell’s Virtual Integrated System (VIS) and our Advanced Infrastructure Manager (AIM) products with Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V and System CenterThis integration underscores Dell’s commitment to drive choice for our customers’ next-generation environments by making it easier for them to deploy and manage multi-hypervisor environments
At the beginning of this presentation, we talked about the dramatic explosion of digital data, the need for 24/7 access to that information and the effect that’s having on our customers’ IT needsWe have technology solutions that respond to this trendThe first is Dell Email Archiving, an end-to-end solution for storage optimization, data retention and governance issues related to email and file backup and archivingTogether with our partners, we’ve taken away the burden of designing and building an e-mail archiving solutions through pre-configured reference architectures that can be hosted in the cloud or on-premiseDell provides all ongoing maintenance and support for the entire solutions, giving customers “one throat to choke” ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Object based storage is right long term platform to keep up with unstructured data growth, delivers 24% better 5-yr TCO than leading NAS. Dell is taking ownership of the solution end-to-end, including upfront design & implementation, as well as ongoing maintenance of hardware and software, at a solution level. No other leading provide is supporting this range of choice of storage platforms, ISV partners, and off premise based approaches to Archive. This preserves customer choice and provides a flexible set of capabilities to right size the solution to each customer’s needs. Overall, this approach will help make Archiving accessible and implementable down into mid sized organizations.
One of the keys to giving end-users the anytime/anywhere access to data and information that they demand is by virtualizing the end-user environmentDell has launched a comprehensive solution portfolio that leverages pre-packaged services with configured and tested hardware and software to help organizations more quickly deploy desktop vitalization We are working with both Citrix and VMWare on the development and testing of these solutions in order to preserve customers’ choice Dell Desktop Virtualization Solutions enables customers to support virtually any end-user computing device, anytime, anywhere in a cost-effective, secure and predictable way The offering helps customers meet business objectives by uniquely analyzing how end user computing is delivered, thereby increasing business agility, enhancing end user experience and productivity as well as reducing operational costs.
