background
Today’s
solution
The waterproofing of structures in France falls into
identified categories: mastic asphalt, prefabricated
bituminous sheets possibly protected by mastic
asphalt, resins and mechanized high-rate systems.
After consideration, the main way of reducing costs
has been identified: substituting the mastic asphalt by
a «traditional» bituminous micro-asphalt mix which
will be produced in asphalt plants and applied by
equipment specific to the roadworks industry.
Many project managers and owners prefer a
waterproofing based on prefabricated sheets
protected with mastic asphalt, mainly for security
reasons. The mastic asphalt has however two major
drawbacks:
Only a few production units,
Application at low rate.
The system which was then chosen consists of a
prefabricated sheet protected by a bituminous microasphalt mix specially designed to maximize its level of
density and give it de facto waterproofing properties.
This solution keeps the advantage of the «double»
waterproofing, longevity token.
The challenge was therefore to provide a waterproofing
system more flexible in terms of production and
application, in order to reduce costs, while remaining
on a system based on two waterproofing components
that ensure sustainability.
In order to protect the waterproofing of the structure
for years and future works, the idea of introducing
a pigment in the micro-asphalt mix emerged. This
measure makes it detectable during maintenance
operations, which will facilitate the work of operators
responsible for the repair of the wearing course. This
feature has led Eurovia to apply for a patent.
Thanks to this colorful innovation, the client can count
on a durable waterproofing system able to bear several
maintenance sequences of the surface layer.
This last aspect gives to the new system an adequacy
for each component of the whole structure between its
function and its lifetime:
On one hand, the waterproofing system ensuring its
structural protection role as long as possible,
On the other hand, the wearing course which is
directly in contact with the external factors such as
traffic and climate and should therefore be replaced
more often.

The important mechanised laying process allows cost
reduction. First, the sheet is rolled out and hot-bonded
onto the support by a secured device working with hotair, automatically guided. The rate of laying can reach
up 2,000 m2/day while the same operation performed
manually only reaches about 100 m2/day.
Secondly, the micro-asphalt mix is produced in
traditional mixing plant and applied by common
equipment specific of the roadworks industry. These
equipments are available in all Eurovia divisions, which
represent an important network. This solution therefore
reduces transport between the mixing plant and the
jobsite in comparison with the mastic asphalt technique.
