2. Basic SAN Concepts
The SAN is used to take local storage
away from the local subsystem and put it
into a machine with more capabilities.
Capabilities include:
Flexibility - More RAID options, Tiered storage,
Remote replication, Snapshots
Scalability - Larger physical disk arrays and
larger LUs
Reliability – Hot spares, additional management
options and monitoring.
Storage economies of scale
3. SAN Connectivity
The SAN uses the Fibre Channel protocol.
Network nodes use HBAs to connect to a
Fiber switch fabric which then connects to the
SAN controllers. WWNs are the physical
addresses used in Fibre Channel.
Switches are zoned to allow communication to
occur between designated hosts only.
Speeds range from 2-8Gbps.
HDLM software used for path failover and load
balancing. It is Hitachi’s form of MPIO.

10. Basic NAS Concepts
The NAS uses network protocols such
as NFS or SMB/CIFS to allow access to
data over traditional LAN topologies
such as Ethernet.
What we use is called a NAS head as it
is an alternate method for interfacing
with SAN based storage rather than a
storage device in and of itself. It
translates block-level SAN protocols to
file-level NAS protocols.

Notes de l'éditeur
The Model WMS100 is available desk-side or rack-mounted (standard 19-inch rack). It uses 110 or 220V power. There is no single point of failure for dual-controller models. The mini-hub refers to the same ASIC (chip) controlling both the front and back end processed within the box. This allows adequate performance for the SMB and archive platform, and a very low price. Full connectivity option is available beginning in December 2005 (slightly higher price but all 4 ports can connect to FC SAN).
Note that unlike the Thunder 9520V, the WMS100 is ALL SATA. The mini-hub architecture yields very good price/performance however a “full connectivity” option is available for customers needing full SAN connectivity (all 4 ports tied to FC SAN).
SNM will not allow R0 to be set on a SATA RAID group.
