Use keyword research to identify and prioritize list of topics

Turn SEMrush’s traffic numbers into annual
potential traffic projections for prioritization
2. Plug bigger sites with similar content into SEMrush’s Pages
report to see what content performs well for them.

spreadsheet (example sheet)

– especially now because Google rounds and averages them a lot
The ‘Keywords Everywhere’ plugin
Analyze search results
manually to determine if you
can rank there.
Looks for ‘gaps’ in:
-Relevance
-Quality
-Domain Authority
-Trust
…etc
4. Use filters in SEMrush to find topics with low difficulty
competitors are ranking for…. These are topics you could target.
These are all interesting
topics worth digging into
more
(honestly, I’d probably
increase the difficulty a little
to get some more ideas)
5. Use search console to see what content is already driving traffic
(Quick aside: the outreach email to me from Keywords Everywhere)
Find posts with high impressions but low clicks – for
opportunity to improve.
Keep a list of 5-10 posts like this that have high
opportunity .. And keep them in mind when promoting
your site, giving interviews, contributing to guest posts ….
Or more proactively run ads on facebook.
Quick detour to analytics – how to set up goal tracking for things like email signups.
THEN… sort content by goal conversion rate to get top
converting content.

THIS is the content you want to focus on promoting!
You can see your highest converting traffic by audience demographics

Back to another HUGE content topic opportunity for his blog (SEMrush Pages Report)
In my opinion the
current results
for “productivity
podcasts” are not
that great.
6. Recap: Strategizing which content to
promote by top converting content.
• When you’re interviewed, guest post etc – pull
from your short list of top converting content.
6. Review highly linked content types (either on your site or competitors).
Do MORE content of the type that
gets links.
7. Use Moz’s Top Pages report and filter by 301s to find old links to get updated.
Point them at the new/current version of the URL.
8. Find and fix internal 301 redirects (link to the final 200 URL instead)
9. Use Moz’s ‘unlinked mentions’ tool to find link opportunities*
*This generally only works for bigger sites and brands that get mentioned a lot
10. Find sites that mention similar sites but
not you. See if there’s an opportunity to be
included and reach out to them
11. Add more navigation,
structure and categorization for
users to find your blog content.
Sidebars, footers, HTML
sitemaps, categories are all
good options for this.
12. Turn book reviews into PDFs –
because:
-the search volume is there
-Current results aren’t great
-Easy to do (repurposing content)
