Stevia Timeline
 Used since 1600 in Paraguay & Brazil.
 In 1931 two scientist isolated the active component that give stevia its sweet
taste: Stevioside and Rebaudioside.
 Since 1970 Japan has embraced stevia as the first Westernised developed
economy.
 In 2008 the FDA allows stevia as a food additive and dietary supplement in the
USA.
 France followed suit in 2009, Hong Kong in 2010 and Europe in 2011.
Testing in Various Conditions and Locations – Aljazur.
• Evolution: Honey beat sugar cane sugar artificial sweeteners high-fructose
corn syrup stevia…?
• In the 17th century cane sugar was a luxury and scarcely consumed item.
• In the 19th century cane & beat sugar became mainstream; Consumption sky-rocketed.
• WHO advices 25 grams of sugar p.p. per day. Current use ± 140 grams of sugar p.p. per
day.
• Excess sugar intake is linked to obesity, type II diabetes, cancer, heart disease, high blood
pressure & tooth decay.
Satisfying our sweet tooth...
'Sugar is the new tobacco': Cuts to amounts hidden in food could halt obesity epidemic, claim
doctors
 Resiliant sugar lobby long resisted approval of stevia in Europe. No checks & balances in the market.
 Afters years of stonewalling, stevia is permitted as a food adative and dietary suplement as of Dec.
2011 (EU). The ‘market’ and players within the sweetener industry are now playing catch-up
 Farmers, the food industry/sweetener market, goverernment and trade all have interest in the
sweetener market.
 Stevia is a potential sugar & artificial sweetener substitute. Many new product developements.
 The sugar lobby is switching from fighting stevia
towards embracing it. Hybrid products etc.
 Government subsidies for sugar production are
set to be abolished (EU 2017).
 Consumers demand healthier alternatives.
Stakeholders & Developments
Trends
Consumer and food processing industry are becoming increasingly health conscious:
 Obesity, diabetes etc. are threatening and affecting our quality of life.
 Food industry is looking for a natural alternative to artificial sweeteners and sugar. Think
of the soda industry for example.
 Demand for healthy ageing.
Economic Motivations:
 Medical cost associated with over consumption of sugar are becoming overwhelming and
unaffordable.
 Around 50% of EU population is overweight (220 million).
Governments are increasingly using legislation to reduce sugars in food:
 Policy making, legislation, sugar tax (Norway, Denmark, Mexico & St Helena).
Trends in Philanthropy:
 Shift from giving to providing with key to self-reliance.
In a report from Credit Suisse ‘Sugar Consumption
at a Crossroad they concluded that sugar
reduction is imminent and an undeniable trend.
The report states; “The most likely outcome over
the next 5-10 years will be a significant reduction
in sugar consumption and a marked increase in
the role played by high- intensity natural
sweeteners in foods and beverages.’
The report continues by stating that ‘30%–40% of
healthcare expenditures in the USA go to help
address issues that are closely tied to the excess
consumption of sugar.’
Sugar Consumption at a Crossroad
Why agriculture & why Ghana?
 Key weapon in fighting poverty in Africa.
 Growing population with sweet tooth in developing world.
 Healthy returns, reasonable risk.
 Increasing demand for stevia.
 Good climate for growing stevia.
 Africa set to host the densest meteorological network in the world.
 Options for sites of 4000 Ha plus in Upper East Ghana inlc. Bulenga, Busa, Katua, Loggu
en Tanina .
 Active participation of government on several levels, such as the ministry for Food and
Agriculture.
 Politically stable, good functioning banking industry.
 In top 10 of Human Development Index Africa.
 GDP has long term average 8% per annum, agriculture 5%.
Stevia is set to conquer (25/40%) market share in the
sweetener market in Europe (Pop. 520mln)
 Governments are keen to reduce the large cost
associated with obesity.
 Subsidies for sugar cultivation are being
reduced/abolished throughout the EU.
 Policy making such as sugar tax is now being
implemented in various countries.
 Consumer are becoming increasingly aware of the
negative effects of sugar over consumption.
 Consumers increasingly suspicious towards artificial
sweeteners.
 Economic motivations for food industry. Stevia already
makes more economical sense then sugar.

Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Americas. The HYET Sweet team brings a wealth
of experience in areas including: Manufacturing, Food Technology, Pharmaceuticals,
Supply Chain and Logistics.
 Government: Cooperation of Ghanaian officials and governmental oganisations such as
Plant Protection and Regulatory Services (PPRSD) and Ghana Food and Drugs Authority
(GFDA).
USP’s
Our impact
• Encourage the use of sustainable agriculture practices.
• Having over 5,240 farmers who have signed on our out grower farmers program.
• Creating 7000 jobs in rural areas.
• Provide the farmers with input & technical know-how.
• Provide market access for the farmers' produce.
• Access to 20,000 hectares farm land (Northern, Brong Ahafo, Eastern and Volta Region)
• Setting up extraction unit(s)and ware houses
• Setting irrigation systems in 20 villages
• Prudential impulses are evident as the project (nucleus farm) has the potential to
create in excess of 2000 full time jobs by 2025. Creating employment in lesser
developed economies is an effective tool in reducing poverty. The World Bank
substantiated this view in their report ''Generating Employment in Poor
and Fragile States: Evidence from Labour Market
and Entrepreneurship Programs''. The balance
between male/female positions is 40/60.
This means that by 2025 (1000 ha in exploitation)
approx. 800 man and 1200 women will hold secure job
positions.

  • 21. Our impact • Encourage the use of sustainable agriculture practices. • Having over 5,240 farmers who have signed on our out grower farmers program. • Creating 7000 jobs in rural areas. • Provide the farmers with input & technical know-how. • Provide market access for the farmers' produce. • Access to 20,000 hectares farm land (Northern, Brong Ahafo, Eastern and Volta Region) • Setting up extraction unit(s)and ware houses • Setting irrigation systems in 20 villages • Prudential impulses are evident as the project (nucleus farm) has the potential to create in excess of 2000 full time jobs by 2025. Creating employment in lesser developed economies is an effective tool in reducing poverty. The World Bank substantiated this view in their report ''Generating Employment in Poor and Fragile States: Evidence from Labour Market and Entrepreneurship Programs''. The balance between male/female positions is 40/60. This means that by 2025 (1000 ha in exploitation) approx. 800 man and 1200 women will hold secure job positions.
