Why are we here?
• VDOT Summer repaving includes several roads in the Mount
Vernon District. Opportunity to review pavement markings and
street design. Project limited to restriping existing pavement.
• Opportunity to provide transportation options and improve
pedestrian safety
• Low to no cost for the County

Lane Diets
• A Lane Diet is generally described as narrowing travel
lanes from a roadway and utilizing the space for other
uses and travel modes. Does not involve reducing the
number of travel lanes.
• Benefits
– Providing transportation alternatives and options
– Increasing safety for non-motorized users
– Reduce speeding

– Bike Lanes from Route 1 to Quander Road School
• Keep parking in front of the school
– Sharrows from Quander Road School to Fort Hunt Road
• Not enough pavement to add bike lanes
• Existing trail

– Road narrows to 22’ wide
– Not enough room for vehicle lanes
and bike lanes, keep parking
– Informs people on bikes that this

Beacon Hill Road/Belle View Blvd
• Three different sections
– Climbing lane from Route 1 to Oak Drive
– Road Diet and bike lanes from Oak Drive to Quander

– Bike lanes from Quander Road to Fort Hunt Road

Route 1 to Oak Drive
• Climbing lane
– Bike lane in the uphill direction towards Route 1
– Sharrows in the downhill direction towards Oak Drive
– Maintain existing parking
– Not proposing to remove travel lanes approaching

• Road Diet
– Removing travel lanes from a roadway and reallocating the
space for other uses
– Rule of thumb: Streets with less than 20,000
vehicles per day don’t need four travel lanes
– Beacon Hill Road: 9,600 vehicles per day

Quander Road to Fort Hunt Road
• Bike lanes
– Existing pavement is 34’ wide, 1 lane in each direction
– Narrow lanes and reallocate extra space for bike lanes
– Not proposing to remove lanes approaching intersection

Parkers Lane/Collingwood Road
Sherwood Hall Lane to Candlewood Drive
• Two different sections
– Buffered bike lanes from Sherwood Hall Lane to
Hinson Farm Road
– Bike lanes from Hinson Farm road to Candlewood Drive
• Road narrows after Candlewood drive and not enough
pavement to continue bike lanes
• Connects to bike lanes on Sherwood Hall
Lane
– Completed with 2014 repaving project

Sherwood Hall Lane to Hinson Farm Road
• Buffered bike lanes
– Existing road is 68’ wide curb to curb
– Proposal to narrow lanes to 11 feet and add
buffered bike lanes
– Existing parking remains
– Not proposing to remove travel lanes approaching
intersection with Sherwood Hall Lane

Sherwood Hall Lane to Hinson Farm Road

Hinson Farm Road
Parkers Lane to Holland Road
• Bike lanes
– Existing travel lanes are at least 12 feet wide
– Can narrow travel lanes to add bike lanes
– Not proposing to remove parking
– Not proposing to remove lanes approaching the intersections
– Would connect with proposed Parkers Lane bike lanes

Parkers Lane to Holland Road

Fordson Road
Sherwood Hall Lane to Route 1
• Street is not wide enough to add bike lanes
• Proposal to add sharrows – called for on bike master plan

Elkin St/Riverside Road
Collingwood Road to Fort Hunt Road
• Street is not wide enough to add bike lanes
• Proposal to add sharrows – called for on bike master plan

Where are we in the Process?
• Conceptual design underway
• Not proposing to change lane
configuration approaching intersections,
so no additional delay to vehicles

What are the next steps?
• Gather community input tonight and over
next two weeks
– Comment Period: Open until April 6th
• Redesign plans as necessary
• Design completion: April 2015
• Projects go to construction Summer 2015
