1. The Pancake
Pancakes are
particuarly associated
with ‘Pancake day’ or
‘Shrove Tuesday’ ; the
day before the start of
Lent in the Christian
calendar.
Originally, pancakes
were eaten to use up
milk and eggs, which
were not eaten during
this period.

timer so you can work at your own speed
2. Now many people
enjoy them
regardless of
religion. Over the
years traditions
such as pancake-
tossing and pancake
races developed.
However pancake-
tossing is not that
easy as out picture
shows.
Here’s how to make a traditional
English pancake……
3. You will need: Equipment:
200g (4oz) plain flour A big bowl
A pinch of salt Scales & measuring jug
1x egg Sieve
Sunflower oil Whisk
300ml (0.5 pint) milk Frying pan & spatula
4. 1. Sift the flower into
a large mixing bowl
until all the flower
has fallen through.
Then add the salt.
2. Make a hole in the
middle of the flour,
break the egg and
let it fall into the
hole. Make sure
the shell of the egg
does not go into the
bowl.
5. 3. Add a table spoon
of oil and two
tablespoons of milk.
Mix it together,
gradually adding the
rest of the milk.
4. Keep mixing until
the batter is
smooth.
6. 5. Heat a frying pan on a
medium heat for about
a minute, then put two
tablespoons of oil into
the bottom of the frying
pan. Swirl it over the
bottom by moving the
pan carefully from side
to side.
6. Add three or four
tablespoons of
batter to the pan.
Swirl the batter
carefully over the
bottom of the pan.
The batter should
sizzle.
7. 7. Put the pan on the
heat and cook the
batter until it turns a
lighter pale colour and
is lightly cooked.
Small holes will also
appear on the top.
8. Loosen the edges of the
pancake all the way
round with a spatula and
then slide the spatula
underneath the
pancake. Flip the
pancake over with the
spatula.
8. 9. Cook the pancake for half a
minute more. Once the
pancake is cooked slide it onto
a plate. It is then ready for
you to add any topping you
wish, for example:
Lemon juice
Sugar
Syrup
9. If you want to try tossing your pancake, MAKE SURE IT IS
REMOVED FORM THE HEAT AND THE COOKING OIL HAS COOLED
FIRST. And please get permission from your parents or teacher,
as this can be messy.
HAVE FUN AND ENJOY…
