Now most scientists agree that the earth is going through another cycle of warming. The use of [CO.sub.2] in oil, gas, factories and refineries has led to a 30 percent increase of the gas in the atmosphere over the last 150 years. With the human inventions of power plants, automobiles, airplanes, oil refineries, high rise buildings, electricity, air conditioning, heating…it really comes as little surprise that this warming is occurring at a much faster rate. With more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, more heat will be trapped, if more heat is trapped the earth’s average temperature will rise. It is not exactly rocket science, but we humans also appear to be trapped by our own technology. There is no denying the importance of these fuels. We use them to heat our homes, power our cars, trucks, SUV’s, airplanes, and other forms of transportations. We use this energy to power almost all of our industries--we cannot survive without it, but if we continue on the same course, the effects could be disastrous. Humans continue to make decisions without thinking of the long-term effects. For example, we know that trees play an important part in the carbon cycle, yet we continue to cut them down. In the Amazon the trees are burned down. This practice of slash and burn contributes to global warming in two ways. Deforestation accounts for 25% of global carbon dioxide emissions. These emissions are caused from the burning and it is only part of the problem. Trees also serve an important role in the carbon cycle--they absorb the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Less trees equals more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. We cannot continue to destroy the forests without suffering the consequences. If humans do not start to work on solutions to this problems there could be devastating effects worldwide.
