The Visitor Center at First Peoples Buffalo Jump is a 6,000
sq ft facility filled with fascinating exhibits exploring the
culture of pre-historic buffalo hunting tribes.
Guests have the opportunity to learn about the history of
this amazing place from park staff and volunteers in our
viewing area.
The viewing area also includes finely crafted stained glass murals by
well known Blackfeet artist Leonda Fast Buffalo Horse. The images
reveal possible expressions of buffalo as they traveled towards the
edge of the jump.
The Storytelling area offers guests a chance to learn more
about Montana’s seven reservations and twelve tribes,
many of whom once used the buffalo jump.
The Interpretive Hall contains a buffalo hide tipi made of 14 hides. It was
prepared the traditional way – tanned, smoked over the campfire and
sewn together with sinew from the buffalo.
The display panels in the Interpretive Hall tell the story of
the peoples’ unique relationship to the buffalo.
There are several interpretive drawers where guests have the
opportunity for more hands on exploration.
The stunning mural in the Interpretive Hall
includes all four seasons. This scene depicts
winter camp.
Our gift shop contains an outstanding collection
of books on tribal culture.
We also have a large selection of Native American
arts and crafts from tribal artists.
At our touch table, kids and adults can get up close
and personal with several natural objects found in the
local area.
We have five buffalo mounts in the Visitor Center –
these two mature bulls, a 3 year old bull from
Yellowstone, and a mother and calf.
We also have several appealing pieces of art throughout the
Visitor Center. This one is called the “Pishkun’s Edge” and
shows what would have happened at the cliff’s edge during
a buffalo hunt.
Our classroom contains an exhibit on the archaeological digs at First Peoples
Buffalo Jump along with several artifacts found in the local area .
After exploring the Visitor Center, guests can relax and enjoy a picnic
lunch on the patio with an excellent view of the buffalo jump. Then hike
or drive to the top of the jump to fully experience this special place.
