6. INSECTICIDE & INSECT REPELLANT
Our planet is not only covered in insecticides, pesticides and other
toxic chemicals, but these detrimental substances are in the air, soil,
our bodies and water supplies; 97% in America contain DEET!
Each year over 200,000 people die from pesticide poisoning. DEET
is the only pesticide allowed to be put directly on people's skin!!
It is hardly surprising that cancer rates are rising with all of this
chemical bombardment on our bodies and the environment around
us. Yes, bugs & mosquitos can be bad, especially when carrying
deadly diseases but there is no need for this chemical overkill when
there is a natural, safer alternative….

27. CHICUGUNYAVIRUS
• Chikungunya (pronunciation: chik-en-gun-ye) virus is transmitted to
people by mosquitoes.
• The most common symptoms of Chikungunya virus infection are fever
and joint pain. Other symptoms may include headache, muscle
pain, joint swelling, or rash.
• Outbreaks have occurred in countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and
the Indian & Pacific Oceans. In late 2013, Chikungunya virus was
found for the first time in the Americas on islands in the Caribbean.
28. CHICUGUNYAVIRUS
• There is a risk that the virus will be imported to new areas by infected
travelers. There is no vaccine to prevent or medicine to treat
Chikungunya virus infection. Travelers can protect themselves by
preventing mosquito bites.
• When traveling to countries with Chikungunya virus, use insect
repellent, wear long sleeves & pants and stay in places with air
conditioning or that use window & door screens.
29. CHICUGUNYAVIRUS
Prevention
• No vaccine exists to prevent Chikungunya virus infection or disease.
• Prevent Chikungunya virus infection by avoiding mosquito bites
(see below).
• The mosquitoes that spread the Chikungunya virus bite mostly
during the daytime.

31. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Health officials in Puerto Rico on
Thursday declared an epidemic of the mosquito-borne virus known
as Chikungunya, which was introduced into the Caribbean region
late last year.
Health Secretary Ana Rius said that more than 200 cases had
been confirmed on the island as of June 25 and that the majority of
them were reported in the capital of San Juan and nearby areas.
The first case of Chikungunya in the U.S. territory was reported in
late May 2014.

CHIKUNGUNYA EPIDEMIC
32. Also on Thursday, officials in Jamaica reported the island's first
confirmed case. The chief medical officer, Dr. Kevin Harvey, said
the virus was found in a person who had recently traveled to a
country where there have been locally transmitted cases.
In Florida, health officials reported the first domestically acquired
Chikungunya infections in the United States. Officials said it
happened in two cases, both of which involved a person infected
with the virus after visiting the Caribbean being bitten again by an
uninfected mosquito in Florida, which then transmitted the
illness further.
PUERTO RICO DECLARES
CHIKUNGUNYA EPIDEMIC
33. Across the Caribbean, the Pan American Health Organization
recorded more than 354,000 suspected and confirmed cases as of
July 11. The Western Hemisphere's first locally transmitted case
was confirmed in December in the French Caribbean territory of St.
Martin.
Chikungunya was first identified in Africa in 1953. It causes a high
fever and severe pain in the joints, but is rarely fatal. There is no
vaccine, and it mainly is treated with pain medication.

35. DENGUE
• Dengue fever is an infectious disease caused by
the virus (DENV).
• It is transmitted by a mosquito within the genus
Aedes, principally the Aedes aegypti.
• The viral infection causes flu-like symptoms and
in occasions develops into a potentially life
threatening disease called hemorrhagic dengue.
• The mosquito is not affected by the virus but it is
used as a site for reproduction and transmission
of the virus.
36. • Dengue virus has become a serious public health hazard in Puerto
Rico, with many cases reported each year.
• In 2007, 11,000 cases were reported (and many more uncalled for)
with 8 of those ending in death!
• Because there is no vaccine, Public Health Officials in Puerto Rico
considered alternative methods like massive fumigation and public
education that includes how to recognize symptoms of Dengue Fever
and how to keep areas clean of standing water.
DENGUE IN PUERTO RICO
37. • Around 500 million people (more than 40% of the world
population) is at risk of contracting the Dengue Fever.
• Before 1970, nine countries in the world had suffered an
epidemic from the most severe type of virus, hemorrhagic
dengue.
• In 2010 1.6 million cases were reported in North and
South America only and 49,000 of those cases were
hemorrhagic Dengue
• In 2010 2.3 million cases were reported in total.
• Not only is the incidence of cases are increasing, but as
the virus expands to new areas and new outbreaks of the
virus are rapidly becoming life-threatening epidemics.
DENGUE AROUND THE WORLD
38. Treatment
• There is no specific treatment for
Dengue Fever.
• In the case of Hemorrhagic Dengue
Fever, medical assistance by
experienced doctors and nurses
familiar with evolution of the disease
may represent the difference between
life and death and may reduce
mortality rate from 20% to 1%.
• It is imperative to maintain the intake
of fluids. Dehydration is eminent.
Immunization
• There is no vaccine to protect us
against Dengue Fever.
• It has been very difficult to develop a
vaccine against the Dengue Fever, but
in recent years improvements have
been made.
• Various vaccines are in trial and
developmental phases.
DENGUE TREATMENT & IMMUNIZATION
39.
40. • Malaria Is a mosquito-borne zoonotic arbovirus.
• This is found in temperate and tropical regions of the world.
• It was first identified in the West Nile sub region in the east African
region of Uganda in 1937.
• The main mode of WNV transmission is via various species of
mosquitoes, which are the prime vector, with birds being the most
commonly infected animal and serving as the prime reservoir host –
specially passerines, which are of largest birds.
WEST NILE VIRUS
41. • WNV also affects various mammal species, including humans, and
has been identified on reptilian species, including alligators and
crocodiles.
• Approximately 80% of the WNV infections in humans are
subclinical, which cause no symptoms.
• In the case where symptoms do occur the time from infection to the
appearance of symptoms is typically between 2 and 15
days. Symptoms may include fever, headaches, fatigue, muscle pain
or aches, malaise, nausea, anorexia, vomiting, myalgias and rash.
• Currently, no vaccine against WNV infection is available.
