"Propaganda is the deliberate, systematic attempt to shape
perceptions, manipulate cognitions, and direct behavior to
achieve a response that furthers the desired intent of the

A brief history
of propaganda
The term propaganda has a nearly universally
negative connotation. Walter Lippmann described
it as inherently "deceptive" and therefore evil.[1]
Propaganda is more an exercise of deception rather
than persuasion. It is akin to advertising and public
relations, but mainly with political purpose.
Although propaganda has been utilized for
centuries, the term was first used in 1622 by Pope
Gregory XV. Gradually, it has become a common
element of politics and war. As new
communications technologies have developed,
propagandists have developed new methods to
reach increasingly large audiences in order to shape
their views. The shift to targeting mass audiences
and not just elite publics has been called by some
as "new propaganda“.[2]

Scurt istoric al
p r o p a g a n d e i
Propaganda își are începuturile în negura istoriei.
opiniile acestuia. Țintirea directă a maselor, ci nu doar a
elitelor publice, a fost denumită "propagandă nouă“. [2]

Many US produced propaganda posters from World War II would typecast the
Japanese as goofy and cartoonish. Buck teeth, big ears and an exaggeration on the
eyes were recurring features.
After the attack on Pearl Harbour, many posters were produced
that actively promoted revenge against the Japanese.
Uncle Sam is portrayed as triumphant against the enemy.
A very powerful image, this poster asks for people to
support the effort financially to save their kids from harm.

2014, intitulat ”COLD WAR II - The World is
Losing Putin´s Dangerous Game”, a abordat
inevitabil criza mondială provocată de
doborârea Malaysia Airlines Flight 17
(MH17/MAS17) pe teritoriul Ucrainei. Primul
articol al publicației, ”In Russia, Crime Without
comportamenul colectiv, dinamica grupurilor,
influența socială, conștiința colectivă, ș.a.m.d.)
Propaganda, as well as public relations and the
advertising industry make use of techniques
that originate in mass psychology. The collective
behavior, group dynamics, social influence and
the collective consciousness are just a
number of elements taken into account.
1. Ad hominem: attacking opponents rather than opponents’ ideas or principles;
2. Ad nauseam: repeating ideas relentlessly so that the audience becomes inured to them;
3. Appeal to authority: use of authority figures (or perceived authority figures such as celebrities) to support ideas;
4. Appeal to fear: exploitation of audience anxieties or concerns;
5. Appeal to prejudice: exploitation of an audience’s desire to believe that it is virtuous or morally or otherwise superior;
6. Bandwagon: exploitation of an audience’s desire to conform by encouraging adherence to or acceptance of idea that is supposedly garnering
widespread or universal support;
7. Beautiful people: depiction of attractive famous people or happy people to associate success or happiness with adherence to an idea or cause or
purchase of a product;
8. Black-and-white fallacy: presentation of only two alternatives, one of which is identified as undesirable;
9. Classical conditioning: association of an idea with another stimulus;
10. Cognitive dissonance: using a favorable stimulus to prompt acceptance of an unfavorable one, or producing an unfavorable association;
11. Common man: adoption of mannerisms and/or communication of principles that suggest affinity with the average person;
12. Cult of personality: creation of an idealized persona, or exploitation of an existing one, as a spokesperson for an idea or a cause;
13. Demonizing the enemy: dehumanizing or otherwise denigrating opponents to sway opinion;
14. Dictat: mandating adherence to an idea or cause by presenting it as the only viable alternative;
15. Disinformation: creating false accounts or records, or altering or removing existing ones, to engender support for or opposition to an idea or
cause;
16. Door in the face: seeking compliance with a request by initially requesting a greater commitment and then characterizing the desired outcome
as a compromise or a minor inconvenience;
17. Euphoria: generating happiness or high morale by staging a celebration or other motivating event or offer;
18. Fear, uncertainty, and doubt: disseminating false or negative information to undermine adherence to an undesirable belief or opinion;
19. Flag waving: appealing to nationalism or patriotism;
20. Foot in the door: manipulation by encouraging a small gift or sacrifice, which establishes a bond that can be exploited to extract more significant
compliance;
21. Glittering generalities: applying emotionally appealing but vague and meaningless words to an idea or cause;
22. Half-truth: making a statement that is partly true or only part of the truth, or is otherwise deceptive;
23. Inevitable victory: assurance of uncommitted audience members and reassurance of committed audience members that an idea or cause will
prevail;
24. Join the crowd: communication intended to persuade the audience to support an idea or cause because it is or will be the dominant paradigm;
25. Labeling or name-calling: using euphemistic or dysphemistic terms to encourage a positive or negative perception of a person, an idea, or a
cause;
P r o p a g a n d a t e c h i q u e s
26. Latitudes of acceptance: introducing an extreme point of view to encourage acceptance of a more moderate stance, or establishing a barely
moderate stance and gradually shifting to an extreme position;
27. The lie: false or distorted information that justifies an action or a belief and/or encourages acceptance of it;
28. Love bombing: isolation of the target audience from general society within an insular group that devotes attention and affection to the target
audience to encourage adherence to an idea or cause;
29. Managing the news: influencing news media by timing messages to one’s advantage, reinterpreting controversial or unpopular actions or
statements (also called spinning), or repeating insubstantial or inconsequential statements that ignore a problem (also called staying on message);
30. Milieu control: using peer or social pressure to engender adherence to an idea or cause; related to brainwashing and mind control;
31. Obfuscation: communication that is vague and ambiguous, intended to confuse the audience as it seeks to interpret the message, or to use
incomprehensibility to exclude a wider audience;
32. Operant conditioning: indoctrination by presentation of attractive people expressing opinions or buying products;
33. Oversimplification: offering generalities in response to complex questions;
34. Pensée unique (French for “single thought”): repression of alternative viewpoints by simplistic arguments;
35. Quotes out of context: selective use of quotations to alter the speaker’s or writer’s intended meaning or statement of opinion;
36. Rationalization: use of generalities or euphemisms to justify actions or beliefs;
37. Red herring: use of irrelevant data or facts to fallaciously validate an argument;
38. Reductio ad Hitlerum: persuasion of an audience to change its opinion by identifying undesirable groups as adherents of the opinion, thus
associating the audience with such groups;
39. Repetition: repeated use of a word, phrase, statement, or image to influence the audience;
40. Scapegoating: blaming a person or a group for a problem so that those responsible for it are assuaged of guilt and/or to distract the audience
from the problem itself and the need to fix it;
41. Selective truth: restrictive use of data or facts to sway opinion that might not be swayed if all the data or facts were given;
42. Sloganeering: use of brief, memorable phrases to encapsulate arguments or opinions on an emotional rather than a logical level;
43. Stereotyping: incitement of prejudice by reducing a target group, such as a segment of society or people adhering to a certain religion, to a set
of undesirable traits;
44. Straw man: misrepresentation or distortion of an undesirable argument or opinion, or misidentifying an undesirable persona or an undesirable
single person as representative of that belief, or oversimplifying the belief;
45. Testimonial: publicizing of a statement by an expert, authority figure, or celebrity in support of an idea, cause, or product in order to prompt
the audience to identify with the person and support the idea or cause or buy the product;
46. Third party: use of a supposedly impartial person or group, such as a journalist or an expert, or a group falsely represented as a grassroots
organization, to support an idea or cause or recommend a product;
47. Thought-terminating cliché: use of a truism to stifle dissent or validate faulty logic;
48. Transfer: association of an entity’s positive or negative qualities with another entity to suggest that the latter entity embodies those qualities;
49. Unstated assumption: implicit expression of an idea or cause by communication of related concepts without expressing the idea or cause;
50. Virtue words: expression of words with positive connotations to associate an idea or cause with the self-perceived values of the audience;

In the 1958 preface for A Brave New World, Aldous Huxley paints a rather
grim portrait of society. He believes it is controlled by an “impersonal force”, a
ruling elite, which manipulates the population using various methods.
“Impersonal forces over which we have almost no control seem to be
pushing us all in the direction of the Brave New Worldian nightmare;
and this impersonal pushing is being consciously accelerated by
representatives of commercial and political organizations who have
developed a number of new techniques for manipulating, in the interest
of some minority, the thoughts and feelings of the masses.”
- Aldous Huxley, Preface to A Brave New World
sentimentelor oamenilor.”
- Aldous Huxley, Prefaţa pentru”Minunata lume nouă”
Edward Bernays (1891-1995) is considered the “father of public
relations” as well as a pioneer in the field of modern propaganda.
Influenced by Wilfred Trotter and Gustave Le Bon, he used concepts
discovered by his uncle, Sigmund Freud, to mold the public using the
subconscious. He felt that manipulation was necessary in society,
which he regarded as irrational and dangerous as a result of the
"herd instinct" that Trotter had described. Thus, he developed the
scientific technique of molding and manipulating public opinion,
which he refered to as ”The Engineering of Consent”.
Along with Walter Lippmann, he was a member of the Committee for
Public Information of the US during WWI, a powerful propaganda
machine that claimed that war is necessary to "make the world safe
for democracy.“ The marketing strategies required to conduct all
subsequent wars were based on the improved methods of this
committee.
It was Bernays who introduced the corporate giants to crowd
psychology methods. His trailblazing marketing campaigns profoundly
changed the functioning of the American society. He created
“consumerism” by making a culture wherein individuals bought on
impulse and for pleasure instead of buying for survival by linking
massed-produced goods to their own unconscious desires. The
tobacco industry hired Bernays to persuade women to take up
smoking. The Alcoa aluminum company asked him to drive the
campaign for the national fluoridation of our water supply.
E d w a r d B e r n a y s
psihologiei maselor.
Joseph Gobbles, creierul propagandei naziste, a folosit
Therefore. Edward Bernays specialised in wording things to
make them more acceptable and to help desensitize
society to ideals, products, and politics they might
otherwise go against.
In addition to famous corporate giants, Bernays also began
working for the federal government. They adopted his
techniques of manufacturing ever present dangers and
then maintaining a constant state of fear to give those in
power greater control of what Bernays called the mass
mind.
He was the chief psychological warfare expert for more
than 20 years, advisor at the Department of War. He
advised them to call it DEFENSE Department (”Don’t be
honest anymore. Call it the Department of Defense,
because you actually going to run giant imperial slaughter
operations").
Joseph Gobbles, the nazi propaganda masterbrain, used a
lot of his work and twisted it in order to fit his own designs
and purpose.
In modern times news media outlets have perfected these
concepts and techniques, and even more so corporate
networks and movie production companies have also
learned to apply them to entertainment as well.

Propaganda, an influential book written
by Edward Bernays in 1928, incorporated
the literature from social science and
psychological manipulation into an
examination of the methods of which
public opinion is shaped and controlled in
business, politics, arts, education and
science.
Chapters one through six address the
complex relationship between human
psychology, democracy, and corporations.
Bernays’ thesis is that “invisible” people
who create knowledge and propaganda
rule over the masses, with a monopoly on
the power to shape thoughts, values, and
citizen response. “Engineering consent” of
the masses would be vital for the survival
of democracy.
Writers such as Marvin Olasky justify
Bernays as killing democracy in order to
save it. In this way, the presence of an elite,
faceless persuasion constituted the only
plausible way to prevent authoritarian
control. [1]
Propaganda reprezintă o carte esențială
scrisă de Edward Bernays în 1928 ce
încorporează literatura din științele sociale
și manipularea psihologică într-o examinare
a modului prin care discursul și opinia
publică sunt modelate și controlate în
domeniul afacerilor, al politicii, al artei, al
educației și al științei.
Capitolele 1-6 fac adresă la relația
compelxă dintre psihologia umană,
democrație și marile corporații. Teza lui
Bernays este că oameni ”invizibili” ce
gestionează cunoștințele și propaganda
sunt cei care guvernează masele, cu un
monopol asupra abilității de a forma
gânduri, valori și răspunsul cetățenilor.
„Ingineria consimțământului“ maselor este
vitală pentru supraviețuirea democrației.
Scriitori precum Marvin Olasky justificau
faptul că Bernays ucide deomcrația pentru
a o salva. Astfel, prezența unei persuasiuni
elitiste și anonime constituie singura
modalitate plauzibilă de a preveni controlul
autoritar.[1]
“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized
habits and opinions of the masses is an important element
in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen
mechanism of society constitute an invisible government
which is the true ruling power of our country. We are
governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our
ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of.
This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic
society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must
cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a
smoothly functioning society. [...] Whatever attitude one
chooses to take toward this condition, it remains a fact that
in almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere
of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical
thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number
of persons [...] who understand the mental processes and
social patterns of the masses.” [1]

PUBLIC RELATIONS VS. PROPAGANDA
Public relations usually is associated with the influencing of public opinion. Therefore it has subsequently
been linked with propaganda. Using one of the many definitions of propaganda "...the manipulation of
symbols as a means of influencing attitudes on controversial matters" (Harold D. Lasswell), the terms
propaganda and PR seem to be easily interchangeable.
Still, many authors explicitly distinguish between public relations, advertising and propaganda. Unlike PR,
which is often described as objective and extensive information of the public, advertising and propaganda
are associated with manipulative activities. Nevertheless to treat public relations and propaganda as
equivalents stands in the tradition of PR. Edward L. Bernays, one of the founders of public relations wrote
"The only difference between propaganda and education, really, is the point of view. The advocacy of
what we believe in is education. The advocacy of what we don't believe is propaganda."
Also, institutions like the German Bundeswehr use the terms publics relations and propaganda
synonymously. After a 1990 legislation of the former minister of defense Stoltenberg, the "psychological
influence of the enemy" was ceased during peace time and the Academy for Psychological Defense
renamed to Academy for Information and Communication, among other things responsible for scientific
research in the field of public relations.
Walter Lippmann, an American intellectual, writer and two-time
Pulitzer Prize winner brought forth one of the first works
concerning the usage of mass media in America. In Public Opinion
(1922), Lippmann compared the masses to a “great beast” and a
“bewildered herd” that needed to be guided by a governing class.
He described the ruling elite as “a specialized class whose
interests reach beyond the locality.” This class is composed of
experts, specialists and bureaucrats. According to Lippmann, the
experts, who often are referred to as “elites,” are to be a
machinery of knowledge that circumvents the primary defect of
democracy, the impossible ideal of the “omnicompetent citizen.”
The trampling and roaring “bewildered herd” has its function: to
be “the interested spectators of action,” i.e. not participants.
Participation is the duty of “the responsible man”, which is not
the regular citizen.
Mass media and propaganda are therefore tools that must be
used by the elite to rule the public without physical coercion. One
important concept presented by Lippmann is the “manufacture of
consent”, which is, in short, the manipulation of public opinion to
accept the elite’s agenda. It is Lippmann’s opinion that the
general public is not qualified to reason and to decide on
important issues. It is therefore important for the elite to
decide “for its own good” and then sell those decisions to the
masses.

răcnetul “turmei învălmășite" are funcția ei: să fie "spectatori
"Democracy is much too important to be left to public opinion.“
(Walter Lippmann)
(Walter Lippmann)
Public Opinion / O p i n i a p u b l i c ă
“That the manufacture of consent is capable of great refinements no one, I think, denies. The process by which public opinions arise is certainly no
less intricate than it has appeared in these pages, and the opportunities for manipulation open to anyone who understands the process are plain
enough. . . As a result of psychological research, coupled with the modern means of communication, the practice of democracy has turned a
corner. A revolution is taking place, infinitely more significant than any shifting of economic power. . . . Under the impact of propaganda, not
necessarily in the sinister meaning of the word alone, the old constants of our thinking have become variables. It is no longer possible, for
example, to believe in the original dogma of democracy; that the knowledge needed for the management of human affairs comes up
spontaneously from the human heart. Where we act on that theory we expose ourselves to self-deception, and to forms of persuasion that we
cannot verify. It has been demonstrated that we cannot rely upon intuition, conscience, or the accidents of casual opinion if we are to deal with
the world beyond our reach.” (Walter Lippmann, Public Opinion)
Harold Lasswell
In 1939-1940, the University of Chicago was the host of a series of
seminars on communications. These think tanks were funded by the
Rockefeller foundation and involved the most prominent researchers
in the fields of communications and sociological studies. One of these
scholars was Harold Lasswell, a leading American political scientist
and communications theorist, specializing in the analysis of
propaganda. He was also of the opinion that a democracy, a
government ruled by the people, could not sustain itself without a
specialized elite shaping and molding public opinion through
propaganda.
In his Encyclopaedia of the Social Sciences, Lasswell explained that
when elites lack the requisite force to compel obedience, social
managers must turn to “a whole new technique of control, largely
through propaganda.” He added the conventional justification: we
must recognize the “ignorance and stupidity [of] … the masses and
not succumb to democratic dogmatisms about men being the best
judges of their own interests.”
Lasswell extensively studied the field of content analysis in order
to understand the effectiveness of different types of
propaganda. In his essay Contents of Communication, Lasswell
explained that, in order to understand the meaning of a message
(i.e. a movie, a speech, a book, etc.), one should take into account
the frequency with which certain symbols appear in the message,
the direction in which the symbols try to persuade the audience’s
opinion, and the intensity of the symbols used.
Lasswell was famous for his media analysis model based on:
Who (says) What (to) Whom (in) What Channel (with) What Effect
By this model, Lasswell indicates that in order to properly analyze
a media product, one must look at who produced the product (the
people who ordered its creation), who was it aimed at (the target
audience) and what were the desired effects of this product (to
inform, to convince, to sell, etc.) on the audience.
Lasswell a studiat îndelungat domeniul analizei conținutului
eseul ”Contents of Communication”, Lasswell afirmă că pentru a

Carl Jung is the founder of analytical psychology (also known an Jungian
psychology), which emphasizes understanding the psyche by exploring
dreams, art, mythology, religion, symbols and philosophy. The Swiss
therapist is at the origin of many psychological concepts used today such
as the Archetype, the Complex, the Persona, the Introvert/Extrovert and
Synchronicity. One of his most important (and misunderstood) concept
was the Collective Unconscious.
“My thesis, then, is as follows: In addition to our immediate
consciousness, which is of a thoroughly personal nature and which we
believe to be the only empirical psyche (even if we tack on the personal
unconscious as an appendix), there exists a second psychic system of a
collective, universal, and impersonal nature which is identical in all
individuals. This collective unconscious does not develop individually but
is inherited. It consists of pre-existent forms, the archetypes, which can
only become conscious secondarily and which give definite form to
certain psychic contents.” (Carl Jung, The Concept of the Collective
Unconscious)
The collective unconscious transpires through the existence of similar
symbols and mythological figures in different civilizations. Archetypal
symbols seem to be embedded in our collective subconscious, and, when
exposed to them, we demonstrate natural attraction and fascination.
Mass media thinkers, such as Edward D. Bernays, found in this concept a
great way to manipulate the public’s personal and collective
unconscious.
(Carl Jung, The Concept
of the Collective Unconscious)
Mass media is the most powerful tool used by the ruling
class to manipulate the masses. It shapes and molds
opinions and attitudes and defines what is normal and
acceptable. Mass media are media forms designed to reach
the largest audience possible. They include television,
movies, radio, newspapers, magazines, books, records,
video games and the internet. Many studies have been
conducted in the past century to measure the effects of
mass media on the population in order to discover the best
techniques to influence it. From those studies emerged the
science of Communications, which is used in marketing,
public relations and politics. Mass communication is a
necessary tool to insure the functionality of a large
democracy; it is also a necessary tool for a dictatorship. It
all depends on its usage.
Totul depinde
de utilizarea sa.

A limited number of actors in the cultural industry means a
limited amount of viewpoints and ideas making their way
to the general public. It also means that a single message
can easily saturate all forms of media to generate consent.
The merger of media companies in the last decades
generated a small oligarchy of media conglomerates. The
TV shows we follow, the music we listen to, the movies we
watch and the newspapers we read are produced by 5
corporations.
The owners of those conglomerates have close ties with
the world’s elite and, in many ways, they are the elite. By
owning all of the possible outlets having the potential to
reach the masses, these conglomerates have the power to
create in the minds of the people a single and cohesive
world view, engendering a “standardization of human
thought”.

generat o mică oligarhie a conglomeratelor media.
generând o "standardizare a gândirii umane“.
Even movements or styles that are considered marginal are, in
fact, extensions of mainstream thinking. Mass medias produce
their own rebels who definitely look the part but are still part of
the establishment and do not question any of it. Artists,
creations and ideas that do not fit the mainstream way of
thinking are mercilessly rejected and forgotten by the
conglomerates, which in turn makes them virtually disappear
from society itself. However, ideas that are deemed to be valid
and desirable to be accepted by society are skillfully marketed to
the masses in order to make them become self-evident norm.
In 1928, Edward Bernays already saw the immense potential of
motion pictures to standardize thought:
“The American motion picture is the greatest unconscious carrier
of propaganda in the world today. It is a great distributor for
ideas and opinions. The motion picture can standardize the ideas
and habits of a nation. Because pictures are made to meet
market demands, they reflect, emphasize and even exaggerate
broad popular tendencies, rather than stimulate new ideas and
opinions. The motion picture avails itself only of ideas and facts
which are in vogue. As the newspaper seeks to purvey news, it
seeks to purvey entertainment.” (Edward Bernays, Propaganda)
(Edward Bernays, Propaganda)
What Makes Mainstream Media Mainstream
Noam Chomsky
Z Magazine, October, 1997 - Extract
”If you’ve read George Orwell’s Animal Farm which he
wrote in the mid-1940s, it was a satire on the Soviet Union,
a totalitarian state. It was a big hit. Everybody loved it.
Turns out he wrote an introduction to Animal Farm which
was suppressed. It only appeared 30 years later. Someone
had found it in his papers. The introduction to Animal
Farm was about "Literary Censorship in England" and what
it says is that obviously this book is ridiculing the Soviet
Union and its totalitarian structure. But he said England is
not all that different. We don’t have the KGB on our neck,
but the end result comes out pretty much the same. People
who have independent ideas or who think the wrong kind of
thoughts are cut out.
He talks a little, only two sentences, about the institutional
structure. He asks, why does this happen? Well, one,
because the press is owned by wealthy people who only
want certain things to reach the public. The other
thing he says is that when you go through the elite
education system, when you go through the proper
schools in Oxford, you learn that there are certain
things it’s not proper to say and there are certain
thoughts that are not proper to have. That is the
socialization role of elite institutions and if you
don’t adapt to that, you’re usually out. Those two
sentences more or less tell the story.”
These facts were flagged as dangers to human freedom in
the 1930′s by thinkers of the school of Frankfurt such as
Theodor Adorno and Herbert Marcuse. They identified
three main problems with the cultural industry. The
industry can:
⇒ reduce human beings to the state of mass by hindering
the development of emancipated individuals, who are
capable of making rational decisions;
⇒ replace the legitimate drive for autonomy and self-
awareness by the safe laziness of conformism and
passivity; and
⇒ validate the idea that men actually seek to escape the
absurd and cruel world in which they live by losing
themselves in a hypnotic state self-satisfaction.
decizii raționale;
pasivității;
Dangers to human freedom Pericole pentru libertate
The notion of escapism is even more relevant today with advent
of online video games, 3D movies and home theaters. The
masses, constantly seeking state-of-the-art entertainment, will
resort to high-budget products that can only be produced by the
biggest media corporations of the world. These products contain
carefully calculated messages and symbols which are nothing
more and nothing less than entertaining propaganda. The public
have been trained to love its propaganda to the extent that it
spends its hard-earned money to be exposed to it. Propaganda
(used in both political, cultural and commercial sense) is no
longer the coercive or authoritative communication form found
in dictatorships: it has become the synonym of entertainment
and pleasure.
“In regard to propaganda the early advocates of universal literacy
and a free press envisaged only two possibilities: the propaganda
might be true, or it might be false. They did not foresee what in
fact has happened, above all in our Western capitalist
democracies — the development of a vast mass communications
industry, concerned in the main neither with the true nor the
false, but with the unreal, the more or less totally irrelevant. In a
word, they failed to take into account man’s almost infinite
appetite for distractions.”
(Aldous Huxley, Preface to A Brave New World)
cinema.

A single piece of media often does not have a lasting effect
on the human psyche. Mass media, however, by its
omnipresent nature, creates a living environment we evolve
in on a daily basis. It defines the norm and excludes the
undesirable.
“It is the emergence of mass media which makes possible
the use of propaganda techniques on a societal scale. The
orchestration of press, radio and television to create a
continuous, lasting and total environment renders the
influence of propaganda virtually unnoticed precisely
because it creates a constant environment. Mass media
provides the essential link between the individual and the
demands of the technological society.” (Jacques Ellul)
One of the reasons mass media successfully influences
society is due to the extensive amount of research on
cognitive sciences and human nature that has been applied
to it.

Publicity is the deliberate attempt to manage the public’s perception
of a subject. The subjects of publicity include people (for example,
politicians and performing artists), goods and services, organizations
of all kinds, and works of art or entertainment.
The drive to sell products and ideas to the masses has lead to an
unprecedented amount of research on human behavior and on the
human psyche. Cognitive sciences, psychology, sociology, semiotics,
linguistics and other related fields were and still are extensively
researched through well-funded studies.
“No group of sociologists can approximate the ad teams in the
gathering and processing of exploitable social data. The ad teams
have billions to spend annually on research and testing of reactions,
and their products are magnificent accumulations of material about
the shared experience and feelings of the entire community.”
(Marshal McLuhan, The Extensions of Man)
The results of those studies are applied to advertisements, movies,
music videos and other media in order to make them as influential as
possible. The art of marketing is highly calculated and scientific
because it must reach both the individual and the collective
consciousness. In high-budget cultural products, a video is never “just
a video”. Images, symbols and meanings are strategically placed in
order to generate a desired effect.

Tehnici în industria
p u b l i c i t a r ă
publicului asupra unui subiect.
(Marshal McLuhan, The Extensions of Man)
efect dorit.
“It is with knowledge of the human being, his
tendencies, his desires, his needs, his psychic
mechanisms, his automatisms as well as
knowledge of social psychology and
analytical psychology that propaganda
refines its techniques.” (Propagandes,
Jacques Ellul)
Today’s propaganda almost never uses
rational or logical arguments. It directly taps
into a human’s most primal needs and
instincts in order to generate an emotional
and irrational response.
If we always thought rationally, we probably
wouldn’t buy 50% of what we own. For
example, babies and children are constantly
found in advertisements targeting women for
a specific reason: studies have shown that
images of children trigger in women an
instinctual need to nurture, to care and to
protect, ultimately leading to a sympathetic
bias towards the advertisement.
”Cunoscand fiinta umana, tendintele sale,
dorintele, nevoile, mecanismele psihice,
automatismele si in acelasi timp avand
cunoasterea psihologiei sociale si psihologia
analitica, propaganda isi rafineaza tehnicile.”
(Propagandes, Jacques Ellul)
Propaganda de astăzi nu utilizează aproape
niciodată argumente raționale sau logice. Ea
Proiect PROPAGANDA
In the past, when changes were imposed on populations, they
would take to the streets, protest and even riot. The main reason
for this clash was due to the fact that the change was clearly
announced by the rulers and understood by the population. It was
sudden and its effects could clearly be analyzed and evaluated.
Today, when the elite needs a part of its agenda to be accepted by
the public, it is done through desensitization.
The concept, which might go against the public’s best interests, is
slowly, gradually and repetitively introduced to the world through
movies (by involving it within the plot), music videos (who make it
cool) or the news (who present it as a solution to today’s
problems). After several years of exposing it to the masses, the
rulers openly present the concept to the world and, due to ”mental
programming”, it is greeted with general indifference and is
passively accepted. This technique originates from psychotherapy.
“The techniques of psychotherapy, widely practiced and accepted
as a means of curing psychological disorders, are also methods of
controlling people. They can be used systematically to influence
attitudes and behavior. Systematic desensitization is a method used
to dissolve anxiety so the the patient (public) is no longer troubled
by a specific fear, a fear of violence for example. [...] People adapt to
frightening situations if they are exposed to them enough”.
(Steven Jacobson, Mind Control in the United States)
Astăzi, când clasa conducătoare are nevoie

C o n c l u s i o n
The “mass population” versus “ruling class” dichotomy is
not a “conspiracy theory”, but a reality that has been clearly
stated in the works of some of the 20th century’s most
influential men.
Lippmann, Bernays and Lasswell have all declared that the
public are not fit to decide their own fate, which is the
inherent goal of democracy. Instead, they called for a
cryptocracy, a hidden government, a ruling class in charge of
the “bewildered herd.” As their ideas continue to be applied
to society, it is increasingly apparent that an ignorant
population is not an obstacle that the rulers must deal with:
It is something that is desirable and, indeed, necessary, to
insure total leadership. An ignorant population does not
know its rights, does not seek a greater understanding of
issues and does not question authorities. It simply follows
trends.
problemelor și nu se îndoiește de autoritatea conducătorilor;
pur și simplu urmează tendințe.

MENTALITĂȚI FAVORABILE PROPAGANDEI
"I know that most men, including those at ease with problems of the greatest
complexity, can seldom accept even the simplest and most obvious truth if it be such
as would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions which they have delighted in
explaining to colleagues, which they have proudly taught to others, and which they
have woven, thread by thread, into the fabric of their lives.“ (Leo Tolstoy)
"Propaganda works best when those who are being manipulated are confident that they are
acting on their free will. "(Joseph Goebbels, Minister of Public Enlightenment, Nazi Germany)
DIVIDE ET IMPERA
In politics and sociology, divide and rule (or divide and conquer) (derived
from Greek: διαίρει καὶ βασίλευε, diaírei kaì basíleue) is gaining and
maintaining power by breaking up larger concentrations of power into pieces
that individually have less power than the one implementing the strategy.
The concept refers to a strategy that breaks up existing power structures and
prevents smaller power groups from linking up.
temeiul lucrului respectiv.
BANDWAGON EFFECT
The bandwagon effect is a phenomenon
whereby the rate of uptake of beliefs,
ideas, fads and trends increases the more
that they have already been adopted by
others. In other words, the bandwagon
effect is characterized by the probability
of individual adoption increasing with
respect to the proportion who have
already done so.As more people come to
believe in something, others also "hop on
the bandwagon" regardless of the
underlying evidence.
BYSTANDER EFFECT AND DIFFUSION OF RESPONSIBILITY
electrice i le pricinuiesc.
Milgram a propus două explicaţii:
nu are expertiză în a lua decizii, în special în condiţii de criză, va lăsa actul decizional în sarcina grupului şi ierarhiei acestuia;
experimentatorului.

  • 5. A brief history of propaganda The term propaganda has a nearly universally negative connotation. Walter Lippmann described it as inherently "deceptive" and therefore evil.[1] Propaganda is more an exercise of deception rather than persuasion. It is akin to advertising and public relations, but mainly with political purpose. Although propaganda has been utilized for centuries, the term was first used in 1622 by Pope Gregory XV. Gradually, it has become a common element of politics and war. As new communications technologies have developed, propagandists have developed new methods to reach increasingly large audiences in order to shape their views. The shift to targeting mass audiences and not just elite publics has been called by some as "new propaganda“.[2] [1] Lippmann, W. A Preface to Morals. New York: Macmillan, 1929. 281. [2] Combs, J.E. and D. Nimmo. The New Propaganda: The Dictatorship of Palaver in Contemporary Politics. New York: Longman, 1993. Scurt istoric al p r o p a g a n d e i Propaganda își are începuturile în negura istoriei. [2]

Propaganda, as well as public relations and the advertising industry make use of techniques that originate in mass psychology. The collective behavior, group dynamics, social influence and the collective consciousness are just a number of elements taken into account.

  • 28. Edward Bernays (1891-1995) is considered the “father of public relations” as well as a pioneer in the field of modern propaganda. Influenced by Wilfred Trotter and Gustave Le Bon, he used concepts discovered by his uncle, Sigmund Freud, to mold the public using the subconscious. He felt that manipulation was necessary in society, which he regarded as irrational and dangerous as a result of the "herd instinct" that Trotter had described. Thus, he developed the scientific technique of molding and manipulating public opinion, which he refered to as ”The Engineering of Consent”. Along with Walter Lippmann, he was a member of the Committee for Public Information of the US during WWI, a powerful propaganda machine that claimed that war is necessary to "make the world safe for democracy.“ The marketing strategies required to conduct all subsequent wars were based on the improved methods of this committee. It was Bernays who introduced the corporate giants to crowd psychology methods. His trailblazing marketing campaigns profoundly changed the functioning of the American society. He created “consumerism” by making a culture wherein individuals bought on impulse and for pleasure instead of buying for survival by linking massed-produced goods to their own unconscious desires. The tobacco industry hired Bernays to persuade women to take up smoking. The Alcoa aluminum company asked him to drive the campaign for the national fluoridation of our water supply.
Therefore. Edward Bernays specialised in wording things to make them more acceptable and to help desensitize society to ideals, products, and politics they might otherwise go against. In addition to famous corporate giants, Bernays also began working for the federal government. They adopted his techniques of manufacturing ever present dangers and then maintaining a constant state of fear to give those in power greater control of what Bernays called the mass mind. He was the chief psychological warfare expert for more than 20 years, advisor at the Department of War. He advised them to call it DEFENSE Department (”Don’t be honest anymore. Call it the Department of Defense, because you actually going to run giant imperial slaughter operations"). Joseph Gobbles, the nazi propaganda masterbrain, used a lot of his work and twisted it in order to fit his own designs and purpose. In modern times news media outlets have perfected these concepts and techniques, and even more so corporate networks and movie production companies have also learned to apply them to entertainment as well.
  • 32. P r o p a g a n d a ( b o o k , 1 9 2 8 ) Propaganda, an influential book written by Edward Bernays in 1928, incorporated the literature from social science and psychological manipulation into an examination of the methods of which public opinion is shaped and controlled in business, politics, arts, education and science. Chapters one through six address the complex relationship between human psychology, democracy, and corporations. Bernays’ thesis is that “invisible” people who create knowledge and propaganda rule over the masses, with a monopoly on the power to shape thoughts, values, and citizen response. “Engineering consent” of the masses would be vital for the survival of democracy. Writers such as Marvin Olasky justify Bernays as killing democracy in order to save it. In this way, the presence of an elite, faceless persuasion constituted the only plausible way to prevent authoritarian control.
  • 33. “The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. [...] Whatever attitude one chooses to take toward this condition, it remains a fact that in almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons [...] who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses.” ” [1] [1] Bernays, Edward. • 34. PUBLIC RELATIONS VS. PROPAGANDA Public relations usually is associated with the influencing of public opinion. Therefore it has subsequently been linked with propaganda. Using one of the many definitions of propaganda "...the manipulation of symbols as a means of influencing attitudes on controversial matters" (Harold D. Lasswell), the terms propaganda and PR seem to be easily interchangeable. Still, many authors explicitly distinguish between public relations, advertising and propaganda. Unlike PR, which is often described as objective and extensive information of the public, advertising and propaganda are associated with manipulative activities. Nevertheless to treat public relations and propaganda as equivalents stands in the tradition of PR. Edward L. Bernays, one of the founders of public relations wrote "The only difference between propaganda and education, really, is the point of view. The advocacy of what we believe in is education. The advocacy of what we don't believe is propaganda." Also, institutions like the German Bundeswehr use the terms publics relations and propaganda synonymously. After a 1990 legislation of the former minister of defense Stoltenberg, the "psychological influence of the enemy" was ceased during peace time and the Academy for Psychological Defense renamed to Academy for Information and Communication, among other things responsible for scientific research in the field of public relations.
  • 35. Walter Lippmann, an American intellectual, writer and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner brought forth one of the first works concerning the usage of mass media in America. In Public Opinion (1922), Lippmann compared the masses to a “great beast” and a “bewildered herd” that needed to be guided by a governing class. He described the ruling elite as “a specialized class whose interests reach beyond the locality.” This class is composed of experts, specialists and bureaucrats. According to Lippmann, the experts, who often are referred to as “elites,” are to be a machinery of knowledge that circumvents the primary defect of democracy, the impossible ideal of the “omnicompetent citizen.” The trampling and roaring “bewildered herd” has its function: to be “the interested spectators of action,” i.e. not participants. Participation is the duty of “the responsible man”, which is not the regular citizen. Mass media and propaganda are therefore tools that must be used by the elite to rule the public without physical coercion. One important concept presented by Lippmann is the “manufacture of consent”, which is, in short, the manipulation of public opinion to accept the elite’s agenda. It is Lippmann’s opinion that the general public is not qualified to reason and to decide on important issues. It is therefore important for the elite to decide “for its own good” and then sell those decisions to the masses.

  • 37. Public Opinion / O p i n i a p u b l i c ă “That the manufacture of consent is capable of great refinements no one, I think, denies. The process by which public opinions arise is certainly no less intricate than it has appeared in these pages, and the opportunities for manipulation open to anyone who understands the process are plain enough. . . As a result of psychological research, coupled with the modern means of communication, the practice of democracy has turned a corner. A revolution is taking place, infinitely more significant than any shifting of economic power. . . . Under the impact of propaganda, not necessarily in the sinister meaning of the word alone, the old constants of our thinking have become variables. It is no longer possible, for example, to believe in the original dogma of democracy; that the knowledge needed for the management of human affairs comes up spontaneously from the human heart. Where we act on that theory we expose ourselves to self-deception, and to forms of persuasion that we cannot verify. It has been demonstrated that we cannot rely upon intuition, conscience, or the accidents of casual opinion if we are to deal with the world beyond our reach.”
  • 38. Harold Lasswell In 1939-1940, the University of Chicago was the host of a series of seminars on communications. These think tanks were funded by the Rockefeller foundation and involved the most prominent researchers in the fields of communications and sociological studies. One of these scholars was Harold Lasswell, a leading American political scientist and communications theorist, specializing in the analysis of propaganda. He was also of the opinion that a democracy, a government ruled by the people, could not sustain itself without a specialized elite shaping and molding public opinion through propaganda. In his Encyclopaedia of the Social Sciences, Lasswell explained that when elites lack the requisite force to compel obedience, social managers must turn to “a whole new technique of control, largely through propaganda.” He added the conventional justification: we must recognize the “ignorance and stupidity [of] … the masses and not succumb to democratic dogmatisms about men being the best judges of their own interests.”
  • 39. Lasswell extensively studied the field of content analysis in order to understand the effectiveness of different types of propaganda. In his essay Contents of Communication, Lasswell explained that, in order to understand the meaning of a message (i.e. a movie, a speech, a book, etc.), one should take into account the frequency with which certain symbols appear in the message, the direction in which the symbols try to persuade the audience’s opinion, and the intensity of the symbols used. Lasswell was famous for his media analysis model based on: Who (says) What (to) Whom (in) What Channel (with) What Effect By this model, Lasswell indicates that in order to properly analyze a media product, one must look at who produced the product (the people who ordered its creation), who was it aimed at (the target audience) and what were the desired effects of this product (to inform, to convince, to sell, etc.) on the audience.
  • 40. C a r l J u n g Carl Jung is the founder of analytical psychology (also known an Jungian psychology), which emphasizes understanding the psyche by exploring dreams, art, mythology, religion, symbols and philosophy. The Swiss therapist is at the origin of many psychological concepts used today such as the Archetype, the Complex, the Persona, the Introvert/Extrovert and Synchronicity. One of his most important (and misunderstood) concept was the Collective Unconscious. “My thesis, then, is as follows: In addition to our immediate consciousness, which is of a thoroughly personal nature and which we believe to be the only empirical psyche (even if we tack on the personal unconscious as an appendix), there exists a second psychic system of a collective, universal, and impersonal nature which is identical in all individuals. This collective unconscious does not develop individually but is inherited. It consists of pre-existent forms, the archetypes, which can only become conscious secondarily and which give definite form to certain psychic contents.” (Carl Jung, The Concept of the Collective Unconscious) The collective unconscious transpires through the existence of similar symbols and mythological figures in different civilizations. Archetypal symbols seem to be embedded in our collective subconscious, and, when exposed to them, we demonstrate natural attraction and fascination. Mass media thinkers, such as Edward D. Bernays, found in this concept a great way to manipulate the public’s personal and collective unconscious. (Carl Jung, The Concept of the Collective Unconscious) Inconștientul colectiv rezultă din existența simbolurilor similare și figurilor mitologice din diferite civilizații.
  • 41. Mass media is the most powerful tool used by the ruling class to manipulate the masses. It shapes and molds opinions and attitudes and defines what is normal and acceptable. Mass media are media forms designed to reach the largest audience possible. They include television, movies, radio, newspapers, magazines, books, records, video games and the internet. Many studies have been conducted in the past century to measure the effects of mass media on the population in order to discover the best techniques to influence it. From those studies emerged the science of Communications, which is used in marketing, public relations and politics. Mass communication is a necessary tool to insure the functionality of a large democracy; it is also a necessary tool for a dictatorship. It all depends on its usage.

  • 54. A limited number of actors in the cultural industry means a limited amount of viewpoints and ideas making their way to the general public. It also means that a single message can easily saturate all forms of media to generate consent. The merger of media companies in the last decades generated a small oligarchy of media conglomerates. The TV shows we follow, the music we listen to, the movies we watch and the newspapers we read are produced by 5 corporations. The owners of those conglomerates have close ties with the world’s elite and, in many ways, they are the elite. By owning all of the possible outlets having the potential to reach the masses, these conglomerates have the power to create in the minds of the people a single and cohesive world view, engendering a “standardization of human thought”.
  • 55. Even movements or styles that are considered marginal are, in fact, extensions of mainstream thinking. Mass medias produce their own rebels who definitely look the part but are still part of the establishment and do not question any of it. Artists, creations and ideas that do not fit the mainstream way of thinking are mercilessly rejected and forgotten by the conglomerates, which in turn makes them virtually disappear from society itself. However, ideas that are deemed to be valid and desirable to be accepted by society are skillfully marketed to the masses in order to make them become self-evident norm. In 1928, Edward Bernays already saw the immense potential of motion pictures to standardize thought: “The American motion picture is the greatest unconscious carrier of propaganda in the world today. It is a great distributor for ideas and opinions. The motion picture can standardize the ideas and habits of a nation. Because pictures are made to meet market demands, they reflect, emphasize and even exaggerate broad popular tendencies, rather than stimulate new ideas and opinions. The motion picture avails itself only of ideas and facts which are in vogue. As the newspaper seeks to purvey news, it seeks to purvey entertainment.” (Edward Bernays, Propaganda)
  • 56. What Makes Mainstream Media Mainstream Noam Chomsky Z Magazine, October, 1997 - Extract ”If you’ve read George Orwell’s Animal Farm which he wrote in the mid-1940s, it was a satire on the Soviet Union, a totalitarian state. It was a big hit. Everybody loved it. Turns out he wrote an introduction to Animal Farm which was suppressed. It only appeared 30 years later. Someone had found it in his papers. The introduction to Animal Farm was about "Literary Censorship in England" and what it says is that obviously this book is ridiculing the Soviet Union and its totalitarian structure. But he said England is not all that different. We don’t have the KGB on our neck, but the end result comes out pretty much the same. People who have independent ideas or who think the wrong kind of thoughts are cut out. He talks a little, only two sentences, about the institutional structure. He asks, why does this happen? Well, one, because the press is owned by wealthy people who only want certain things to reach the public. The other thing he says is that when you go through the elite education system, when you go through the proper schools in Oxford, you learn that there are certain things it’s not proper to say and there are certain thoughts that are not proper to have. That is the socialization role of elite institutions and if you don’t adapt to that, you’re usually out. Those two sentences more or less tell the story.”
  • 57. These facts were flagged as dangers to human freedom in the 1930′s by thinkers of the school of Frankfurt such as Theodor Adorno and Herbert Marcuse. They identified three main problems with the cultural industry. The industry can: ⇒ reduce human beings to the state of mass by hindering the development of emancipated individuals, who are capable of making rational decisions; ⇒ replace the legitimate drive for autonomy and self- awareness by the safe laziness of conformism and passivity; and ⇒ validate the idea that men actually seek to escape the absurd and cruel world in which they live by losing themselves in a hypnotic state self-satisfaction. • 58. The notion of escapism is even more relevant today with advent of online video games, 3D movies and home theaters. The masses, constantly seeking state-of-the-art entertainment, will resort to high-budget products that can only be produced by the biggest media corporations of the world. These products contain carefully calculated messages and symbols which are nothing more and nothing less than entertaining propaganda. The public have been trained to love its propaganda to the extent that it spends its hard-earned money to be exposed to it. Propaganda (used in both political, cultural and commercial sense) is no longer the coercive or authoritative communication form found in dictatorships: it has become the synonym of entertainment and pleasure. “In regard to propaganda the early advocates of universal literacy and a free press envisaged only two possibilities: the propaganda might be true, or it might be false. They did not foresee what in fact has happened, above all in our Western capitalist democracies — the development of a vast mass communications industry, concerned in the main neither with the true nor the false, but with the unreal, the more or less totally irrelevant. In a word, they failed to take into account man’s almost infinite appetite for distractions.” (Aldous Huxley, Preface to A Brave New World) Noțiunea de ”escapism” (scăpare) e mult mai relevantă azi datorită apariției jocurilor video, a filmelor 3D și a sisteme home- cinema. • 59. A single piece of media often does not have a lasting effect on the human psyche. Mass media, however, by its omnipresent nature, creates a living environment we evolve in on a daily basis. It defines the norm and excludes the undesirable. “It is the emergence of mass media which makes possible the use of propaganda techniques on a societal scale. The orchestration of press, radio and television to create a continuous, lasting and total environment renders the influence of propaganda virtually unnoticed precisely because it creates a constant environment. Mass media provides the essential link between the individual and the demands of the technological society.” (Jacques Ellul) One of the reasons mass media successfully influences society is due to the extensive amount of research on cognitive sciences and human nature that has been applied to it. • 61. Publicity is the deliberate attempt to manage the public’s perception of a subject. The subjects of publicity include people (for example, politicians and performing artists), goods and services, organizations of all kinds, and works of art or entertainment. The drive to sell products and ideas to the masses has lead to an unprecedented amount of research on human behavior and on the human psyche. Cognitive sciences, psychology, sociology, semiotics, linguistics and other related fields were and still are extensively researched through well-funded studies. “No group of sociologists can approximate the ad teams in the gathering and processing of exploitable social data. The ad teams have billions to spend annually on research and testing of reactions, and their products are magnificent accumulations of material about the shared experience and feelings of the entire community.” (Marshal McLuhan, The Extensions of Man) The results of those studies are applied to advertisements, movies, music videos and other media in order to make them as influential as possible. The art of marketing is highly calculated and scientific because it must reach both the individual and the collective consciousness. In high-budget cultural products, a video is never “just a video”.
  • 62. “It is with knowledge of the human being, his tendencies, his desires, his needs, his psychic mechanisms, his automatisms as well as knowledge of social psychology and analytical psychology that propaganda refines its techniques.” (Propagandes, Jacques Ellul) Today’s propaganda almost never uses rational or logical arguments. It directly taps into a human’s most primal needs and instincts in order to generate an emotional and irrational response. If we always thought rationally, we probably wouldn’t buy 50% of what we own. For example, babies and children are constantly found in advertisements targeting women for a specific reason: studies have shown that images of children trigger in women an instinctual need to nurture, to care and to protect, ultimately leading to a sympathetic bias towards the advertisement. ”Cunoscand fiinta umana, tendintele sale, dorintele, nevoile, mecanismele psihice, automatismele si in acelasi timp avand cunoasterea psihologiei sociale si psihologia analitica, propaganda isi rafineaza tehnicile.”
  • 64. In the past, when changes were imposed on populations, they would take to the streets, protest and even riot. The main reason for this clash was due to the fact that the change was clearly announced by the rulers and understood by the population. It was sudden and its effects could clearly be analyzed and evaluated. Today, when the elite needs a part of its agenda to be accepted by the public, it is done through desensitization. The concept, which might go against the public’s best interests, is slowly, gradually and repetitively introduced to the world through movies (by involving it within the plot), music videos (who make it cool) or the news (who present it as a solution to today’s problems). After several years of exposing it to the masses, the rulers openly present the concept to the world and, due to ”mental programming”, it is greeted with general indifference and is passively accepted. This technique originates from psychotherapy. “The techniques of psychotherapy, widely practiced and accepted as a means of curing psychological disorders, are also methods of controlling people. They can be used systematically to influence attitudes and behavior. Systematic desensitization is a method used to dissolve anxiety so the the patient (public) is no longer troubled by a specific fear, a fear of violence for example. [...] People adapt to frightening situations if they are exposed to them enough”. D e s e n s i t i z a t i o n D e s e n s i b i l i z a r e a
  • 65. C o n c l u s i o n The “mass population” versus “ruling class” dichotomy is not a “conspiracy theory”, but a reality that has been clearly stated in the works of some of the 20th century’s most influential men. Lippmann, Bernays and Lasswell have all declared that the public are not fit to decide their own fate, which is the inherent goal of democracy. Instead, they called for a cryptocracy, a hidden government, a ruling class in charge of the “bewildered herd.” As their ideas continue to be applied to society, it is increasingly apparent that an ignorant population is not an obstacle that the rulers must deal with: It is something that is desirable and, indeed, necessary, to insure total leadership. An ignorant population does not know its rights, does not seek a greater understanding of issues and does not question authorities. It simply follows trends. • 67. DIVIDE ET IMPERA In politics and sociology, divide and rule (or divide and conquer) (derived from Greek: διαίρει καὶ βασίλευε, diaírei kaì basíleue) is gaining and maintaining power by breaking up larger concentrations of power into pieces that individually have less power than the one implementing the strategy. The concept refers to a strategy that breaks up existing power structures and prevents smaller power groups from linking up.
BANDWAGON EFFECT The bandwagon effect is a phenomenon whereby the rate of uptake of beliefs, ideas, fads and trends increases the more that they have already been adopted by others. In other words, the bandwagon effect is characterized by the probability of individual adoption increasing with respect to the proportion who have already done so.As more people come to believe in something, others also "hop on the bandwagon" regardless of the underlying evidence.
