literal forest of acronyms. Tech writers use a lot of terms that
aren’t intuitive. They don’t do it because they’re bad people.
When you’ve written fifty articles on HTML, you tend to stop
explaining what it actually means sooner or later.
But fear no more! This article will look at the terms most
commonly used in the tech writer jargon. It serves a twofold
purpose – it will help you understand technobabble whether
you’re just reading articles or writing them yourself. Bookmark

B2B stands for business to business. It describes all the cases where
companies are offering services or solutions aimed at other companies rather
than private consumers.
B2C is the brother term of B2B and means business to customer. Here,
individuals are the ones who profit from the product or services offered.
Cloud is a term that can get confusing. When talking about cloud computing,
it doesn’t mean that the information or data is somehow flying above our
heads. It’s actually just the method of storing data on external servers rather
than on your own private computer.
CPC, CPE, CPM are all abbreviations used in online advertising. They are
different payment calculation methods and mean cost per click, per
engagement and per mille (thousand), respectively. They describe what an
advertiser is paying for – a click on the ad, a certain action (engaging) or for a
thousand views.

Creative Commons is actually an organization, but the term usually refers to
the license established by that organization. It’s a license you’ll often find on
pictures, infographics and other resources on the internet. Things with the
creative commons license can be shared, used or built upon, provided the
conditions of the author are met (e.g. naming them).
Flash is short for Adobe Flash, a software solution that was, in the very recent
past, the standard method to build animation heavy websites. Flash has been
in decline and is nowadays mostly used for mobile games.
Freelancer – now here’s a term we all know and love. Freelancing is one the
best ways to work nowadays: it lets you be your own boss and chose what
projects you work on. Most importantly, it gives you an amount of flexibility
that is rarely found in regular employment models.

HTML is an acronym for Hyper Text Mark-up Language. It is a programming

IoT (Internet of Things) is an overarching futuristic term for things like smart
homes. It stands for physical objects like cars, thermostats or TVs being
equipped with sensors in order to collect and exchange data. Imagine your

hour beforehand. That’s the Internet of Things.

OS stands for operating system. You know the popular ones – Mac OS,
Windows, Linux and so on. These are the software backbone of your phone
or computer.
SEO or search engine optimization is the technique of making sure your
content is ranked highly on search engines like Google. Google and its
competitors use certain algorithms to determine the rank of pages, like
looking for links to other content or reviewing the mobile-friendliness of your

UI is an abbreviation for user interface. That’s the part of a website which the
users interact with directly.
URL comes from the term uniform resource locator. In layman’s terms, that’s
an internet address.
