Freelancing is growing like crazy and you’re probably still
wondering why your mom won’t finally get it. The skepticism is
still there, especially among people who see the eight hours
office day as the only “real” job. Don’t be mad at those people,
though. The global economy has changed a lot in the past
twenty years and it’s not an easy thing to adapt your mindset
to.If your mom, dad, any other relative or friends are struggling
to understand what freelancing actually is and how you can
possibly make money by doing it , there are ways to explain it.
Here are a few steps that will help even the most oblivious old-
timer out there realize that freelancing is not only a real job, but
also in many ways better than the traditional forms of
employment.

People get numbers – your mom and all other freelancer critics included. Tell
them freelancing as a way of work is growing. According to Forbes, one in
every three workers in the USA is working as a freelancer. That’s 53 million
freelancers in the US alone. And that number is projected to grow by 50
percent by 2020. And the worldwide trend is similar, too! The World Bank
estimates that the freelancer market will grow to 103 million freelancers in
2016, up from 78 million in 2015. Successful freelancer business owners also
have an enormous space for growth – more than any other employee.

A big reason of why a lot of non-millennials are confused by freelancing is
because of a predominant cliché surrounding the way of work: You chill on
your couch, watch TV series, write a couple of emails and call it a day. That’s
not the way freelancing works – you know it, but many others don’t. So tell
them what you do all day. Most freelancers have a set schedule and a lot of
tasks they do all day – talking to client, working on projects, looking for new
opportunities etc. Just describe a typical day to anyone who doubts how
serious your job is.

The easiest way to convey what you actually do to someone who is out of
touch with the modern business world is to actually show them the product
of your work. You wrote an article, built a site, designed a cool logo or
something similar? Let freelancer sceptics have a look at that. Seeing a
finished product, even if the work behind it is often underestimated, can be
eye-opening.

Like it or not, the main reason most people have a job is because they want
to earn money. And that’s what your mom actually worries about – that
you’re wasting your time and not earning enough. A lot of freelancers I know,
however, earn more per hour than many full-time employees with similar
sets of skills do in a week. That’s because freelancing allows you to bargain,
set your own price and earn what you’re worth. All the profit goes to you.
