The Population Paradox of Modern Utopias,[object Object],By Thomas Frison,[object Object]
Thesis,[object Object],Utopias must be small to minimize differences in opinion, but a small, modern Utopia is not viable on its own.,[object Object]
Definitions,[object Object],Society:,[object Object],A collection of people and the structure in which they live, including:,[object Object],Laws,[object Object],Government,[object Object],Means of Production,[object Object]
Definitions,[object Object],Utopia:,[object Object],A society in which everyone believes that the society is the best that it can be.,[object Object],There can be some malcontents, however there cannot be any sizeable minority that disapproves of how things are.,[object Object],A Utopia is not a perfect society.,[object Object]
First Premise,[object Object],Utopias must be small to minimize disagreements in the definition of Utopia.,[object Object]
Reasoning,[object Object],People disagree.,[object Object],A Utopia is only valid if everyone agrees that it is a Utopia.,[object Object],This means that if there is a major disagreement in a wider variety of topics related to society, then you don’t have a Utopia.,[object Object],To minimize disagreements on the definition of Utopia, the Utopia must be small.,[object Object]
Alternative:Re-education:,[object Object],Re-education,[object Object],Convince everyone that it is a Utopia, even if it isn’t.,[object Object],Methods:,[object Object],Propaganda,[object Object],Religion,[object Object],Drugs,[object Object],Isn’t a true Utopia.,[object Object]
Alternative:Compilation of small Utopias:,[object Object],Make the structure very looseso that the society fits the widest definitions of Utopia.,[object Object],Results in everyone creating their own Utopia.,[object Object],The whole cannot be considered Utopian by our definition.,[object Object],As it’s a collection of small Utopias, still doesn’t disprove the argument that Utopias must be small.,[object Object]
Second Premise,[object Object],A small, modern Utopia cannot be viable on its own.,[object Object]
Reasoning:Resources:,[object Object],Resources:,[object Object],Members of modern societies expect massive amounts of goods and services.,[object Object],This is in addition to food, water, shelter, and other basic needs.,[object Object],Not enough resources or space in a small society to provide everything expected.,[object Object]
Reasoning:Defense:,[object Object],Defense:,[object Object],Modern attacks can come from any direction because of missiles.,[object Object],Hard for a small group to protect itself from outside attack, especially from a larger group.,[object Object]
Alternative:Additional Labor,[object Object],Technology,[object Object],Requires more resources and people to maintain and build the machines.,[object Object],Could drain resources as much as it boosts efficiency, resulting in a low net gain.,[object Object],Slaves,[object Object],Violates definition of Utopia as slaves are part of the society and would not view the society in a favorable light.,[object Object]
Alternative:Reduced Production,[object Object],Utopia could focus on producing only basic needs for itself.,[object Object],Without modern products, would be weak to outside attack.,[object Object],Could trade with outside groups for modern goods and services.,[object Object]
Issues With Trade,[object Object],If the Utopia has to focus on basic needs, then it wouldn’t have much to trade with.,[object Object],If it received modern goods and services from outside, then it would start relying on that outside supplier who would have power over the Utopia.,[object Object],The Utopia could trade with multiple groups so that each group keeps the others from taking over.,[object Object]
Summary,[object Object],A Utopia must be small to qualify as a Utopia.,[object Object],Small size reduces disagreements.,[object Object],A small, modern, Utopia is not viable.,[object Object],Cannot produce everything needed by modern consumers.,[object Object],Can be problems with relying on outside suppliers.,[object Object],Therefore, there cannot be a modern Utopia.,[object Object]
