The benchmark indices were rather subdued despite a strong rally in Asian BSE Smallcap 6,923 6,908 0.22 and European markets. After opening with smart gains, the key Indian equity indices were unable to hold on Nifty Junior 9,904 9,895 0.09 to the early gains on the back of selling pressure in Oil & Gas, Capital Goods, Power and Telecom stocks. Shares of Reliance Industries lost 4%, after its quarterly earnings failed to impress the markets, and on news reports that it will halt drilling because of a review on the internal valuations of its exploration activity by the government.
